Bucs Bring Potent Offense for Grid Tilt With Tornado Can the Medf ord Black Tor nado, with the best defensive record in the state, once more hold firm against the high geared offense of the Marsh field Pirates. And, can it un leash a smashing assault of its own to advance toward the Oregon Class A-l high school football championship? That's what home town fans are asking as the Tornado girds this week for a quarter- Kapp's Lead In Offense Substantial Los Angeles- (ITT) -Quarterback Joe Kapp, leading Paci fic Coast conference candidate for All-America football hon ors, held a substantial lead to day in individual total offense and was comfortably ahead in the rushing department. The California signal caller also led his team to the total offense and rushing leads for PCC teams, according to of ficial statistics released today. But he couldn't do much about a leaky Bear defense which placed the league lead ers eighth in the nine-team loop in that department. Kapp has a total yardage output of 926 yards, com pared to 649 for Bob Hivner of Washington and 604 for Stanford's Bob Nicolet. Kapp was also the top rusher with 470 yards, averaging 4.4 yards on 107 carries, compared to 405 yards for second place Charles Morrell of Washing ton State. Willie West of Ore gon holds down third with 375 yards. The prolonged absence be cause of injury of Bob New man, Washington State star, enabled Nicolet to take over the passing lead. Nicolet has completed 62 passes in 117 tries for 598 yards. Niwman Second ' Newman's 49 completions In 75 aerials gave him second place on the basis of 511 yards, and his passing aver age of .653 was still tops for the conference. Dick Norman, No. 2 Stanford quarterback, came next with 42 comple tions in 80 tries for 325 yards. Kapp was fourth in comple tions with 41 in 73 attempts. Bill Patton of California re tained his scoring lead with 56, followed by teammate Jack Hart with 34 and Gail Cogdill of Washington State with 32. Chris Burford of Stanford eemed to have the pass re ception crown sewed up with 34 for 373 yards, against 25 for 305 for Bob Dehlinger of Idaho. Irv Nicolet of Stanford was third-24 for 186. Dainard Paulson of Oregon State is the punting leader with a creditable 42.3 mark on 27 punts, while John Hor- rillo of the Beavers Is tops in punt returns with 15 for 160 West has eight kickoff returns for 192 yards, best in that department. Oregon is the top defensive unit in the conference, yield ing an average of 219.6 yards a game, and also is best in rushing defense-145.7 yards per game. Washington State's passing defense was No. 1, giving up' 60.4 yards a game, just as its own aerial attack was the best in the league with 147.8. final elimination game and its second of the season with the Coos Bay school. Medford, second ranked in Oregon, and Marshfield, rated third, tangle Friday night at the high school stadium here. Marshfield invades the Tor nado lair bringing one of the state's flashiest offensive rec ords and a defense which has been almost as stingy as the Tornado in giving opponents yardage. 2,591 Net Yards Paced by the running of halfbacks Walt Hunter and Gary Rossi and Fullback Les Golbeck and the passing of Jerry Burke, the Bucraneers have rolled up a bulging 255 points and have piled 2,287 yards from rushing and 304 from , passing for a massive 2,591 total net. Coos Bay de fenders have yielded 57 tal lies and 1,176 net yards to foes. In comparison, the Black Tornado with Halfbacks Gerry Lyonsand Ron Reich and Full back Skip Bennett the work horse luggers and Bob Pond, Dick Ragsdale and Ken Dur- kee hurling the oval has run up 182 counters and 2,171 net yards. Medford has gained 1,560 on the ground and 611 through the air. While Marshfield's attack ing forces have surged more mightily, Medford has the bet ter defensive showing, giving up one lone TD and 1,019 net yards to rivals. Kunier Arerages 7.4 For the Pirates individu ally Hunter has averaged 7.4 yards with 849 yards on 114 carries. Rossi has 6.3 on 621 for 98 and Golbeck 4.2 on 328 for 78. Marshfield has com pleted 27 of 75 passes with Burke throwing 90 per cent of the time. Lyons heads the Medford packers with 389 yards on 102 tries for 3.8. Bennett has toted 96 times for 312 and 3.25 and Reich on 67 occasions for 284 and 4.24. Other top carriers have been Ken Durkee 30-193- 6.42, Len Griggs 17-111-6.53, Dan Sieg 28-96-3.43 and Rags- dale 25-95-3.80. Ragsdale, out for the sea son with a knee injury, com pleted 12 of 16 passes for 191 yards. Bob Pond has 185 yards on eight completions in 25 tosses. Durkee is six for 10 and 85 - yards. Lowell Dean has caught six passes for 133 yards, Reich six or 118 and Pond seven for 70. Pirates Edge in Yards Despite Medford's tremen dous defensive record for the season and Mike Murray's field goal which gave the Tor nado a 3 to 0 verdict over Marshfield here in the early game. The Pirates had a sta tistical yardage edge offen sively and defensively in the hassle. The Bucs had 28 yards passing and 104 rushing for 132 net while holding Med ford to an 83 total, 16 in the air and 67 running. And the Bucs have some other fine defensive showings. They held Klamath Falls to one net yard rushing and Hillsboro wound up with minus 13 yards. Coach Fred Spiegelberg of the Black Tornado indicated that workouts for the Med fordits Monday afternoon and Tuesday morning were mostly review and polish. Murray, de fensive lineman and place kicker, was laid up by flu. JIM BEAM Honors Sutherland Pullman, Wash.- (UPD -They said Jim Sutherland's Wash ington State football team was a one-man gang which would fold if an injury should sideline passing wizard Bob Newman. But Newman, the nation's total offense leader last sea son and a top All-America quarterback candidate this year, was benched early in the season with . a knee in jury and has played only briefly since. Yet Washington State has won four of five games since his injury. The victories are a tribute to Sutherland's emergency surgery on the Cougar grid machine. His 7-0 upset of Ore gon State last week kept him in the race for a Rose Bowl bid and earned him the nod today as United Press Inter national Coach of the Week. Sutherland, after a stint of prep coaching and assisting at California and Washington, came here in 1956 after one of the worst seasons in Wash ington State history. He in stalled a wide-open pro-type offense which has put the Cougars among the top pass ing teams in the country. He likes flankers. He shoots for the long gainers and trick stuff which sometimes can give him the edge over teams with better all-around material. May Beam . . . Martin, his physician, put it this way: "There's no proof of tuber culosis yet but it's one of the possibilities. Tests so far have been inconclusive." News Leaks Martin said he notified John J. Quinn, vice president and general manager of the Braves, of Schoendienst's con dition after the news leaked out that he had entered St, John's Hospital for a check up. Concerning Schoendienst's general condition Martin said it was good other than that he appeared somewhat "run down." Ryff Engages Perkins Tonight Chicago (UPD Frankie Ryff's "comeback" campaign, aimed at either the world lightweight or welterweight championship, runs into a go-for-broke opponent tonight when the New York star faces Chicago's Eddie Perkins in a televised 10-round bout. Ryff, trying for his sixth straight win and his 28th in 33 pro fights, was an 8-5 fa vorite, mostly because he has had more than twice as many fights as Perkins, who at 21 is five years younger than his foe. Both Ryff and his new man ager, onetime iigntweignt champion Barney Ross, be lieved he would win to possi bly move back into the top ten lightweight rankings. But Perkins, who has scored as many knockouts , in 15 pro bouts as Ryff in 32, three, could upset, and he planned to do so.
