Young people don't seem to have this difficulty. Strokes and Alcohol A number of women write, wondering if they should give in to the wishes of their old father who has had a stroke, and who now wants to have his favorite one or two high balls before dinner. The wom en want to know if this alco hol will make him worse, or more likely to have another stroke. I much doubt if the alcohol will do him any harm. It might even do good by serving as a tranquilizer and a relaxant of arteries. Actually, I am a great be liever in letting old people have" pretty much what they want in the way of food and drink. Why should their chil dren raise cain with them on the chance that their life might be lengthened a bit? The children have no right to boss their parents. Some day, when I have a bit of spare time, I am going to found a much-needed "Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Aged Parents by Their Loving and Over-solicitous Children!" Many a time an old man of 75 or older has been brought into my office by his grown daughters who wanted me to help them deprive him of his pipe, perhaps because of a blood pressure. Usually, I put my arm around the old gentle man and say, "No; I'm all for him. If he wants to smoke himself into an early grave at the age of 85,.I'm for that." Similarly, when a grandmoth er with a supposedly bad heart and perhaps swollen ankles is brought in to me by her daughters who insist that she be told to do none of the work around the house that she so wants to do, I stand up for grandmother and insist that she do the washing if she wants to. Her greatest joy is to feel that she is still part of the family and of some use around the place. Muscles Getting Shorter Scores of people write ask ing me about some condition that their doctor diagnosed that I cannot understand at all. For instance, here comes a letter from someone who says that his doctor tells him that his discomforts are due to his muscles getting short, and that he'll have to live for the rest of his life like that. A .Geographical Tongue) Dozens of people ask what to do for a geographical tongue. Actually, I don't think we doctors know much about that condition or what to do for it. Probably, in many cases, there is not a great need for treatment. I don't tknow that it is likely to turn into anything else. Some persons complain because their tongue is so full of deep fissures, but, again, I don't know what to do for that. I doubt if it needs treatment.
