Jack White of the firm re ported that an increased num ber of participants should make the run one of the best which has been held here. The event is open to all classes of motorcycles. Entries are an ticipated from various Ore gon communities and from northern California. Prizes include three large trophies. There will be the usual . Thanksgiving turkey for the winner. Participants will meet at White's shop on North Pacif ic highway and the run will be over valley roads. Rees Takes Job in East The weekly hunting and peared in the Mail Tribune under the by-line of Mel Rees, has been discontinued. Rees, a Grants Pass writer, has accepted a position in New York in public relations and will leave southern Ore gon. .' He said, in telling the Mail Tribune of his plans, "I shall miss the good people of ,t h e Rogue valley and the pleasure it has given me to report the hunting and fishing. WSC Winds Up Heavy Practice Pullman, Wash. - (UPD -The Washington State Cougars wound up heavy practice Wednesday for their import ant game against league-leading Oregon State. The Cougars ran through a tough two-hour scrimmage, which sidelined reserve guard Kevin Scanlan with a severe ly pinched shoulder nerve. For total net yardage will de cide such issue. Depth and Experience The clubs, now knotted in the conference standings, both will carry depth and experi ence into the ruckus. Each started the campaign with a sizable group of lettermen and these and others have the benefit of a full season be hind them. Medford's crew has been helped by a platoon system which has allowed a lot of youths to play and by offensive and defensive inter change when situations ne cessitated or permitted. Each aggregation has its cripples but Grants Pass is probably in its best physical shape of the season while Medford is hardest hit and can, be real thankful for its depth. Medford's Tornado will match its combine of power and eruptive force in multiple offense in a multiple and sin gle wing and T attack against the explosive T formation of the Cavemen. . Medford probably has more horses" with the running talents of Gerry Lyons, Skip Bennett, Ron Reich, Dan Sieg, Ken Durkee and Leonard Griggs and the passing of Bob Pond, Ray Konopasek 'and several others but will sorely miss the packing and throw ing of Dick Ragsdale, side lined by a knee injury and the flu. Lyons is also trying to shake off the flu bug and may not start. Dean Big Gun Jack Dean is the big gun of the Caveman ground of fense and GP has other capa ble runners in Marvin Terry, Oscar Nealy, Hugh Brown and Ray Meek and a plunger in Larry Drake. Terry has been hobbled by a leg ailment and should see some service although he may not start. Dick Hayes is the Grants Pass chief chucker. Lyons has been the main Medford workhorse this fall with 97 carries and 374 net yards. Bennett is next with 84 times carried and 280 yards and Reich has toted 254 net on 37 times with the ball. For Grants Pass Dean has accu mulated 494 yards on 72 packs and Terry has 218 for 54. The forward pass, mostly a surprise weapon for Medford in past recent seasons, has had more use this fall with Rags dale doing the biggest share of the flinging.. He has com pleted 12 of 26 tosses. Aerials remain an important part in the Grants Pass offensive scheme with Hayes doing most of the casting. He has 14 connects in 38 throws. -Other Threats Both clubs have their threats on pass interceptions, punt returns and kick-off run backs. For Medford Don Peek has run up 215 yards on 15 punt returns and has crossed the goal on an 89-yard pass interception run. Sieg on a 55-yard scamper and John Harvey on a 49-yard scoot have stolen passes for touch downs. Reich has carried back a punt 75 yards to the goal. Terry, Nealy, Meek and Dave Mannan are runback threats for the Cavemen. Medford has fared .some what better both offensively and defensively against its adversaries than have the T .. 7 re mviiea MEDFORDvTRIBUNE TOE OF TORNADO - Mike placekick and kick-off expert, and is a mainstay in the middle of the defensive line. The Black Tornado will utilize his talents on Friday night at Grants Pass when Medford meets the Cavemen gridders in the District 6 A-l decider. Murray has kicked 15 extra points in field goal, for Medford. Cavemen. The Tornado in its seven games has run up 1895 yards from scrimmage for a per game average of 270.7. For Grants Pass the offensive total has been 1650 and the average "234.2. Medford has held its rivals to an aggregate of 876 yards, or 121.1 per game. The Cavemen have al lowed 1046 yards, an average of 149.4. Opponents have run up 73 first downs to 68 for Grants Pass. Medford has 80 first downs for the season while permitting its opposition 58. Punting Duel Tremendous defense has contributed to the Tornado's No. 2 rating in the state for Medford has allowed only one touchdown all season. Grants Pass, given No. 5 and No. 6 rankings by the raters, has permitted its goal to be cross ed only four times. ' Punting could be a factor in the game and Lynn Knight of Medford may duel with Larry Drake of the Cavemen. Kicking statistics for one Tor nado game are not available but in the six others Knight has averaged 37.12 yards for 32 boots. Medford will have more all stars in . its line-up. Wendell Winterbottom, a guard, Jerry Putnam, a tackle, and Dean, a halfback, were on the 1957 all-conference first team. Reich, a Tornado halfback, gained second team recogni tion. The board of small colleee coaches which rates the teams gave Mississippi Southern 31 first-place votes and a total of 373 points this week. Brown Still Air Leader P o r 1 1 a n d-(DPD-Champion Oregon .Tech, on the strength of its big victory over Oregon College of Education at Mon mouth last Saturday, took over as rushing leader of the Oregon Collegiate Conference. Oregon Tech increased its rushing average to 174.1 yards per game and its total offense was 303.3 yards per game. Otis Foster of OTI picked up 33 points against OCE for a new single game scoring rec ord and also the lead in the conference scoring race with 51- George Kane of Portland state led the rushers with 401 yards and a 5.2 average. Jack Brown of Southern Oregon topped the passers with 52 out of 104 for 833 yards. The conference finale this weekend sends Eastern Ore gon to Ashland to play South ern Oregon. An EOC win would put it into a three-way tie with SOC and Portland State for last place. NAME SWIMMING COACH New Haven, Conn. (DPD Yale University has named Philip E. Collection Project Begun For Crater Stadium Fund Central Point Coordin ating committeemen have announced the start of anoth er project in the campaign to raise funds in School District 6C for completion of a stad ium at Crater High school. The project involves collection- of lids from cans of a certain brand of coffee and the packages or box tops from one brand of potato chips. Col lection stations so far have been set up at Crater high, Central Point grocery stores and at the Big Y at the north edge of Medford. A station is planned at Gold Hill. Jack Hanel Ski Group President Jack Hanel is the new pres ident of Rogue Snowmen, lo cal ski club. He succeeds Bill Moffat. Other officers named at a Monday meeting were Mike Hartley, vice-president, and Mrs. Richard Swan, secretary treasurer. A film on the new skiing technique, "wedelyn," was shown at the meeting. The new officers said that persons wishing to join the club will be welcome. -Information on the organization may be obtained from Rogue Ski shop, 415 Oak st., Med ford. Russell Sparks Boston Celtics United Press International - One of the most sensational performances of Bill Russell's career today eased the Boston Celtics' concern over the pos sibility that playmaker Bob Cousy may be sidelined for two or three games. Russell, 6-foot, 10-inch ex San Francisco ace, connected for 28 points and grabbed 27 rebounds Wednesday night as the Celtics nipped the Syra cuse , Nationals, 117-115. The Nationals rallied in the final minute to tie the score but the Celtics won on Sam Jone's 17- foot jump shot with one sec ond remaining. Cousy suffered torn liga- ments in his right leg just be fore halftime, did not return to action. The New York Knicker bockers, meanwhile, remained in first place in the Eastern division of the National Bas ketball association when they beat the Cincinnati Royals, 108-97, for their third win in four games. Emperor Penguins Said Unavailable Portland -(DPD- Jack Marks, director of the Portland zoo, talked with Portlanders via radio from McMurdo Sound, Antarctica, Wednesday and said it appears he will have to return home without any Em peror penguins. Marks said hejiad captured 30 of the smaller Adelie pen guins but sighted no Emperor birds. He said he planned to leave the Antarctic Sunday by plane with the Adelie pen guins for Portland. Ontario Approves Sewage Disposal Plan Ontario-TOPD-A city bond is sue of $300,000 for a sewage disposal plan was passed here Tuesday 965 to 275. The State Sanitary Authority ordered Ontario to establish facilities for sewage disposal by July, 1959. Vernon Reed was elected mayor,. 25,000 Kilowatts Added To NW Pool Portland - (UPD - Twenty- five thousand kilowatts of hydroelectric power have been added to the Northwest power pool by a sixth genera-' tor put on the line at Faraday powerhouse on the Clackamas river, Portland General Elec tric Co. announced Wednes day. The Faraday plant, located two miles upstream from Esta cade, now has a total output of 44,000 kiowatts. Nyssa Council Has First Woman Member Nyssa (UPD Nyssa elected its first woman city council member this .year. Kay Brendle polled 339 votes to be elected to a two-year term. Funds raised will go toward construction of a grandstand and installation of lights-at the field. The high school now uses the field adjacent to the junior high and this facility is considered inadequate for needs of schools here since the junior high uses the field for games and practice as well. Other projects are contem plated. The drive began last month by a sale of Pepsi Cola for $1 per bottle. Gals' Grid Mix Friday Cave Junction The all-girl foolball game between Jun ior Jazzies and the Senior Saints is building up to a hi larious contest which will be played 'rain or shine' under the lights on the Illinois Val ley High school field Friday night, Nov. 7. The -seniors, with Jackie Williams and Carmel White as captain and co-captain, are coached by Howard Ollis, as sisted by 'Russell Beem, Jun ior captain and co-captain are Arlene Hoover and Phyllis Beard. Coaches are Robert Tucker and Jerry Buckholtz. The game is planned as a mock homecoming and at half time a king will be crowned from two senior candidates, Mike Whitely and Fred Davis, and junior entry, D a v e y Lewis. Cheer leaders from . both classes and the junior rally squad, made up -'from the en thusiastic Cougar boys varsity team, will encourage the girls efforts. It is to be a full scale game with 48. minutes of play. Regulation football gear will be worn by the girls. Jerry Coleman May Get Post New York -(UPD- Jerry Cole man, 35-year-old ex-second baseman, is considered the No. 1 candidate to succeed Lee MacPhail, who is leaving his post as director of player per sonnel for the New York Yankees to become general manager of the Baltimore Orioles. Coleman has been assistant director of player personnel for the last year. Johnny John son, an assistant director of the Yankees' farm system, is another leading candidate. (UPD Young Johnny Busso asked today for a February title shot with Joe Brown because of his upset non-title decision Wednesday night that snap ped the lightweight cham pion's unbeaten string at 20 straight bouts.. Busso, of New York, who tagged the highly regarded 135-pound ruler with his first defeat in more than three years, 'said, "They promised me a title fight if I beat Brown-and I did." Busso, 24, weighed 1393,4 pounds as he forced 32-year- old Brown about the ring in every round. Johnny was a 3-1 underdog. The champion scaled 140V. Since each weighed more than the 135 pound limit, by agreement, the title was not at stake. Brown of New Orleans, but now living at Houston, Tex., hadn't been beaten since Aug. 1, 1955, when he dropped, a decision to Arthur Persley. Busso forced the fighting in every round and earned the verdict with his long left jabs, left-rights and shots to the body. He kept the retreating and side-stepping champion so busy, he rarely was able to nail Johnny with his explo sive right counters. Only in the fourth and eighth rounds did Brown hurt Busso, who is ranked fifth among contenders by the NBA and sixth by the Ring Magazine. MEDFORD ELKS! Senators Have Right To Move Washington (UPD- Federal Judge David A. Pine ruled Wednesday that the Washing ton Senators have a legal right to transfer their Ameri can league franchise to annth- er city. H. Gabriel Murphy, a 40 per cent stockholder in the club, brought suit against the Senators contending that a 1954 law Drevpntprf th Sen ators from making a trans fer. The law requires com panies incorporated in the District of Columbia to have tneir place of business here. Pine held that this rliH nnt deprive an already-incorporated group of the right to move. John E. Powell - - 1 for the Senators, "declined comment on whether there are any future Dlans to shift the Senators an another city. American league owners blocked a proposed transfer last summer.
