16 MAIL TRIBUNE, Medford, Ore., Wednesday, November 5, 1958 Democrats Gain Governorships For Biggest Margin in 20 Years Washington-CPD-Democrats spread their control over enough governorships ' today to give them the possibility of their biggest margin in 20 years. They captured GOP state governments in California, Ohio, Maryland, Nevada, Wis consin and South Dakota and were leading in two other ttates. But the Republicans, their eyes also on 1960 and the presidency took over Demo cratic governorships in New York, Arizona, Rhode Island and Orecon. If the Democrats' apparent net gain stands up in later returns, they will wind up with more governorships than they had held since the second FDR sweep of 1936. That elec tion brought their total to 38. Mew Total of 33 Seen The Democrats held 29 state houses .before Tuesday's off year election. Returns early today showed they had won or were leading for enough governorships to give them a new total of 33. Their last peak of 30 governorships came out of the Truman "up set" election of 1948. Ohio's Michael V. DiSalle, former Democratic price ad ministrator, upheld advance predictions by unseating GOP Gov. C. William O'Neill. The governor staked his campaign heavily on a right-to-work proposal which the voters overwhelmingly rejected. I here also was little sur prise in Maryland's result, where Democrat J. Millard Tawes won handily over Rep James P. S. Devereaux, Ma rine hero of Wake Island. Unexpected Victories But the Democrats, possibly capitalizing on dissatisfaction with administration farm pol ces, won unexpected gover norship victories in South Da kota and Wisconsin. Democrat Ralph Herseth beat Republican Phil Saun ders in South Dakota. Repub lican Gov. Vernon W. Thom son was unseated in Wiscon sin by Democrat Gaylord A. Nelson. In Nevada, GOP Gov. Charles H. Russell lost to Democrat Grant Sawyer. GOP Wins Arizona Arizona's Republican Paul Fannin, riding the same GOP tide which reelected Sen. Barry Goldwater, beat out Democratic Attorney General Robert Morrison for that Democratic -held governor ship. And in. Rhode Island, Democratic Gov. Dennis J. Roberts was beaten by Chris topher Del Sesto, the Repub lican who lost the same race two years ago on a state Su preme Court decision invali dating absentee ballots. Demos Keep Iowa, Kansas Democrats were able to hang on to two of their newest governorships, in normally Republican Iowa and Kansas. Iowa Gov. Herschel C. Love less defeated Republican Wil liam G. Murray. Gov. George Docking made himself the first two-t erm Democratic governor in Kansas by beat ing Clyde M. Reed. The Democrats kept their grip on key Pennsylvania, electing Pittsburgh Mayor Da vid L. Lawrence over Repub lican Arthur T. McGonigle, a pretzel-maker. Michigan s White House hoDeful. Democratic Gov. G. Mennen (Soapy) Williams, won his sixth term by a com fortable margin, defeating Re publican Paul D. Bagwell. Ribicoff Retains Seat Connecticut Gov. Abraham A. Ribicoff kept his statehouse under Democratic control by turning back the threat of Re publican Fred R. Zeller. Mas sachusetts Gov. Foster Fur- colo did likewise for. the Dem ocrats by beating Republican Charles Gibbons. Democrats won with little challenge in Alabama, Arkan sas, Georgia, South Carolma, Texas, Tennessee and Okla homa, all in the Southern tra dition. Republican victories were chalked up in New Hamp shire, where Wesley Powell defeated Democrat Bernard L. Boutin, and in Vermont, where Republican Robert T. Stafford scraped through to win over Bernard J. Leddy. -rL Jsagi liL Oregon To Send Same 4 Members Back To Congress Portland- (LTD -Oregon will send the same four members of Congress to Washington, D. C. for new two-year terms. Three Democrats and Rep. Walter Norblad, the only Re publican member of Oregon's congressional delegation, won reelection Tuesday. Democrats reelected were Mrs. Edith Green of Portland, Charles O. Porter of Eugene and Al Ullman of Baker. Thornton Defeated Norblad continued his su nremacv in the first district, outdistancing Democratic At torney General Robert Y. Thornton. Norblad was ahead in every county in the district except Clackamas, Columbia and Tillamook. Thornton conceded defeat early today and congratulated Norblad. "I wish him a very successful term," he said. Mrs. Green won her third term in Washington by piling up nearly a two-to-one margin over John Johnston, a Port land Navy reserve officer. Porter Pulls Ahead Porter pulled steadily ahead of Roseburg attorney Paul Geddes in late returns after trailing the former state sen ator at the start of the count ing. Geddes, conceding defeat, said, "I would like to con gratulate him and express my gratitude that in a Democratic district I did as well as I did. Ullman. from the power conscious eastern Oregon reg ion and a public power ad vocate, had a whopping lead nt nparlv 17.000 votes over Marion Weatherford, Arling ton wheat rancher, with less than 100 of the 441 precincts to be counted. Oregon had no senatorial contest this year. The present term of Sen. Richard Neu- berger expires in 1960 and that of Sen. Wayne Morse in 1962. Bogota, capital of the Re public of Colombia, is noted for its many churches. It was founded in 1538. Kennedy Returned In Massachusetts Boston - (UPD - Sen. John F Kennedy and Gov. Foster Fur rolo returned to office in a thunderous Democratic land slide, unofficial returns show ed today. All other incumbents on thp ton of the state ticket were sweDt back into office ' and Democratic spokesmen claimed control of the state Senate for the first time in history. The House of Repre sentatives went Democratic again by a substantial major ity. With votes tabulated from 1.546 of 1.970 Drecincts, Ken nedy buried Republican Vin-' cent J. Celeste 986,251 to 31,- 539. There were immediate cries in his party that he was a "good bet" for the 1960 presi dential nomination, but the boyish-looking senator, who may end up with a record smashing plurality of 600,000 said only "I'm just interested in the Senate now; I just fin ished running for that." Ribicoff, Demos Sweep Connecticut Hartford, Conn. -UPD- Dem nrratir Rnv. Abraham A. Ribi- coff and the entire Democratic ticket swept the boards in Tuesday's election, the first such victory in 18 years. Democrats captured a U. S. Senate seat and six congress ional seats from Republicans onH tnnlr rnntrol of the State General Assembly for the first tune in 82 years, ft was a personal landslide for Ribicoff. Former Ambas sador in India Chester Bowles made a political comeback ace Seely-Brown in the 2nd district. Thomas J. Dodd won the Senate seat held for a single term by Republican William A. Purtell. Six-term Republi can Congress- man-at-large, Antoni N. Sadlak, who invar iably led his ticker in the past, lost to Democrat Frank Kowalaki Jr., a .political neophyte. S. occupation forces. Fluoridation Issue Trailing in Eugene Eugene (WD A measure calling for fluoridation of the Eugene water supply was trailing by about 500 votes to day. A similar measure was defeated by about 600 votes in a previous election. Eugene Woman Crushed To Death NEugene (UPD An elderly woman was crushed beneath the wheels of an empty gra vel truck here Tuesday as the heavy vehicle backed down a hill. The victim, Mrs. Kathryn Crenshaw, 82, Eugene, was partially deaf and failed to hear the truck's back-up warn ing horns, according to witnesses. Nevada Voters Defeat Malone Reno-diPD-Democrats swept every Republican office hold er but one out of office in Tuesday's Nevada election in cluding Sen. George W. (Molly) Malone and Gov. Charles H. Russell. Voters, falling in line with the nationwide Democratic landslide, elected Howard W. Cannon, 46, Las Vegas city attorney, to the Senate. Malone, 68, GOP maverick, campaigned against "funny money, free trade and billions for Europe" in protest of many of President Eisenhow- er's major policies. Cannon ignored national and interna tional issues for the most part in his campaign but did tell reporters "I am not an isola tionist." Republican Gov. Charles H. Russell, 54, former congress man, failed by a wide margin to win an unprecedented third term in the statehouse. Grant Sawyer, 39, "wonder boy" of Nevada politics, won the gov ernorship handily.
