The American committee felt that, only qualified persons should be using hypnosis, and the technic should be used only in certain cases. The use of hypnosis for purposes of entertainment on the stage was vigorously condemned. Dr. Milton J. Marmer. an esthesiologist at the Cedars of Lebanon hospital in Los Ang eles, reported extensive trials of hypnosis as an aid in main taining surgical anesthesia. He used it in addition to an esthetics in several hundred operations. He found that it works best on children, be tween the ages of 7 and 14; adults are not so easily put into a decidedly anesthetic state. One advantage of us ing hypnosis is that, with it, one can use less of the chem ical anesthetic. Efficiency of Polio Vaccine A recent study in Canada has amply confirmed the value of the Salk vaccine. I read now that in 1957, in a group of 1,800,000 youngsters under 18 who received at least two doses of the vaccine, only 17 got polio. But as I write this, I read that in a few cities of the United States there are serious epidemics of polio. What is sad is that a large percentage of the mo thers of this country have not been sufficiently interested in protecting their children to take them for injections of vaccine. This has been the story always in the past. As soon as a vaccine or a serum has almost wiped out a dis ease, the disease has come back because people, having lost their fear of it, have either not bothered to get pro tected, or they have actually employed lawyers to enjoin the . health authorities from using the all-important vac cine or serum. OfC Good Weather Due For Election Day Washington (UPD The Weather Bureau says most of the nation will enjoy sunny, mild Indian summer weather on election day Tuesday, per haps drawing more voters to the polls than had been ex pected. It forecast theft tempera tures in the heavily-populated mid-Atlantic states, where there are important races in New York and Pennsylvania, will hit the 60s and possibly 70s.
