The report, released late Friday, also' said farm pro duction costs rose to a record high in the month. The agen cy's monthly price report was issued only three days before voters troop to the polls in Tuesday's congressional elec tions. Assistant Secretary of Agri culture Marvin L. McLain said the farm price decline was "primarily seasonal." He pointed out that prices re ceived by farmers in mid-October were five per cent high er than a year earlier and that farm prices have been higher than last year during each montji of 1958. He said the lower prices occurred mainly in commodities which are in seasonally large supply. McClain commented on the report in the absence of Sec retary of Agriculture Ezra Benson who was in Fresno, Calif., for a campaign speech. Benson has said he expects the Republicans to hold all their farm state seats and per haps pick up some new ones. The department said a heavy volume of new crop grapefruit and oranges mov ing to market was chiefly re sponsible for the sharp drop in Porter Reports Trujillo Official Has Been Sacked Eugene -(UPD-Rep. Charles O. Porter (D-Ore.) said yester day that the Dominican Re public official who wrote to Gov. Robert D. Holmes last month complaining about rec ent Porter attacks on the Latin American country has been removed from office. Porter said the U. S. state department notified him that Arturo Despradel, the official, wrote a letter of apology to Gov. Holmes Oct. 18. He was relieved of his post as Do minican secretary of state for industry and commerce two days later, Porter said. Porter had protested to the state department in Washing ton, D. C, because of what he termed "unwarranted in terference by Trujillo govern ment in the Internal political affairs of the state of Oregon." The Dominican Republic hinted that it would cut off trade with the state , of Ore gon if some action was not taken to prevent Porter from criticizing the Trujillo govern ment. . farm prices in mid-October. It was the scarcity of these cit rus fruits which caused the farm price index to go up in mid-September. Also contributing to the de cline for mid-October were lower prices for hogs, cotton, eggs, and corn. Price increases for milk, strawberries, wheat, and several vegetable crops were not enough to offset the sharp declines. Farm production costs, led by higher farm wage rates, pushed farm living expenses up seven - tenths of one per cent during the month. Average hog prices for the month were $18.50 per hun dredweight compared with $20 in mid-September and $17 in mid-October a year ago. Average beef cattle prices were $22.50, compared with the same amount for mid-September, and $17.40 in mid October, 1957.
