Order of Eastern Star, cel ebrated the 50th anniversary of institution in ceremonies held Saturday, October 25, in Crater High schol gymnasium. Eastern Star dignitaries from many parts of the state and hundreds of southern Oregon members attended. Heading the list of visiting members was Mrs. Victor Thomesen, Hood River, wor thy grand matron; Mrs. Rich ard Dickenson, Corvallis, asso ciate grand matron; Morris Boughner, Medford, grand sentinel; and Mrs. George Page, grand Adah from Klam ath Falls. Also here were Mrs. Dee White, Brookings, endow ment committee member; Mrs. An important nt in fraternal circles last week and was the observance by Ne vita chapter. Order of the Eastern Star, Central Point, of the fiftieth anniversary of institution. Given special honors during the evening were Mrs. George Nevita chapter; Mrs. Victor Thomson. Hood River, worthy grand matron for Oregon; Mrs. Richard Dickenson, Corvallis, associ ate grand matron; Mrs. Merril Harsh. Nevita worthy matron. (Betta) Pankey, past matron and sen ior matron of the chapter. Mrs. Edna Robnett, Portland, another charter member, was unable to attend. Supplies Music Miss Edna Dougherty, Ash land, past grand organist, sup plied organ music for the cer emonies and Dr. Norman K. Tully of Central Point Pres byterian church gave the in vocation. The Hillah Temple chanters, directed by John Lusk, Medford, sang. Wyles Berry, associate pa tron of Nevita chapter, was flag bearer and the " color guard was Leslie Goff, Rich ard and William Callander Talent Woman Sings for DAR Mrs. Henry DeVoss, Talent, sang a group of vocal solos for a meeting of Crater Lake Chapter. Daughters of the American Revolution at Girls' Community club in Medford, October 25. The regent, Mrs. Virgil Bolton, presided. Hostesses for the afternoon was Mrs. Jesse C. Long, Jack sonville. She was assisted by Mrs. C. O. Lovejoy, Mrs. Carl Oestreich and Mrs. J. W. Kir- by. Pouring were Mrs. Volney Dixon and Mrs. H. Stanley Chirgwin. The next meeting will be m the new home of Mrs. Glenn F. Schneider. Secretary Flying To Staff Session Mrs. Mahr Reymers, Ash land, executive secretary for the Jackson County chapter, American Cancer society, planned to leave by plane to day for Salt Lake City to at tend a training conference of the society. Staff members from 15 states and Alaska will attend the conference. Sessions are to continue five days. and Roscoe Day, of Crater chapter, Order of DeMolay. In her address of welcome Mrs. Merril Harsh, worthy matron, explained the theme of the evening "Golden Chains of Life and Friendship." This was exemplified in the pro grams, decorations, and in a drilfl Mrs. William H. Holt, past matron, read a history of the chapter. She stated that the chapter was instituted by Mrs. Jennie Reames, worthy grand matron for Oregon at that time. She was assisted by Mrs. Nellie McGowan as" grand marshal; Mrs. Ralph Wood ford, grand secretary; and Mrs. AliceWatt, grand chaplain. Charter Members The sixteen charter mem bers were William Leever, Waaren Nprcross, I. C. Rob nett, James W. Myers, Lewis Hatfield, George Neale and Robert Kyle, Masons, and the Mesdames Hattie Hatfield, Lola Norcross, Edna L. Rob nett, Isabel Leever, Kate My ers, Martha Frederick, Mollie Neale, Vinnie Kyle and Miss Alice E. Hanley. Mrs. Hatfield was the first worthy matron, and Mr. Nor cross the first patron of the chapter. Mrs. Hbbnett was elected associate matron. The first candidates initiated were Mr. and Mrs. Victor Bursell. Mrs. Reames named the new chapter "Nevita" meaning di vinely protected. The new chapter first met in a room in the Cowly building rented from the Grand Army asso ciation and located across the street from the present city hall in Central Point. Later members met in the Central Point Opera house, located where the post office is now. In 1922 the present building was purchased from the YMCA. By the fifth anniversary the chapter had acquired dishes, silver, table linen and an elec tric star. In early days the Masons and Stars held joint installation ceremonies, pre ceded by a banquet. From time to time a visit was made to Alpha chapter in Ashland, with members leaving early one day, taking food for lunch and supper, and returning. Dancers Entertain Dancers from the Thurston school entertained, and Mrs. D. G. MacDougall sang, ac companied by Mrs. Harold Head. Mrs. Wyles Berry, a past matron, 'introduced 20 past matrons and 11 past pa trons of Nevita. A birthday cake decked with a golden star and the fig ures "50" was presented and the candles were lighted by Miss June Hopkins and Miss Cathleen Harsh, members of Bethel 38, International Or der of Job's Daughters. Other Daughters who assisted were Misses Victoria Lester, Elaine Wilson, Cora Bell Ravenor, Carol Taylor, and Janet Kil bourn. Officers and Courtesy Girls presented an addendum, with each woman holding a chain of 50 links. Officers wore gowns of gold brocade, and the Courtesy Girls were dress ed in taffeta and bittersweet color. Russell Fair, worthy patron, presented the "good of the order portion of the program. I he ceremomes closed with the Mizpah benediction and a reception followed. Anniversary celebration chairmen were Mrs. Paul Snook, Mrs. Frank Ward, Mrs. Berry, Mrs. Luther Day, Mrs. Elva Edler. Mrs. Ted Flury, Mrs. Leonard Free man, Mrs. Lewis Kilbourn. Mrs. Earl Corned, Mrs. Harsh, Mrs. Richard Stratton and Mrs. D. Jackson. The hall was decorated with a large golden star en circled by 50 golden chains on a back drop of pale green; me figures 1908 and 1958 were linked to the star by smaller golden chains. Mrs. Edler was decorations chair man. The dining room was decorated by Mrs. Kilbourne using golden chrysanthemums. bittersweet colored dahlias and golden chains. The re freshment table was centered with a large golden dish with floating flowers. , Visit Announced Of Grand Master Wilford Beard, Salem, grand master of the Odd Fel lows lodge in Oregon will pay ms official visit ta the Med ford lodge Tuesday. Novem ber 4, at 8 p.m. He will speak on the activities of the lodses in the state and outline the program for the coming year It has been announced that no entertainment will be held smce it is election day. Music Teachers Slate Meeting Rogue Valley Chapter of the Oregon Music Teachers as sociation will meet Monday November 3, at 7:45 p.m. at the home of Mrs. Effie Kurtz, 4 Newtown avenue, Medford Mrs. Karl Peterson. Ash land, will present information and details on the syllabus examinations which . will be held in the spring. Sarah Jo Diment and Linda Emery, pupils of Mrs. Nor ma Head, will play. A huge birthday cake was served at the Mrs. George (Mollie) Neale, (at left) is a fiftieth anniversary celebration of Nevita charter member of the chapter; Mrs. H. T. chapter. Gardeners Plan Open Meeting Medford Garden club will hold an open meeting in Girls Community club Thursday, November 6, at 1 p.m. An in vitation is extended to mem bers of neighboring garden clubs in the Siskiyou district to attend. A program on holiday ar rangements and decorations will be presented by Mrs. J. P. Weahunt and Mrs. J. O. Bennett, The silver tea to follow is in charge of Mrs. C. L. Miller, chairman and Mrs. Clare Austin., Fiber Flower Craft To Be Program for Eagle Point Group 9 Eagle Point Mrs. Clarence Davies will demonstrate fiber flower craft at the Eagle Point Garden club meeting Wednesday, November 5, at the home of Mrs. Agusta Perry, at 10 a.m. A business meeting will be held at 1:30 p.m. Those at tending the workshop are to take a sack lunch; dessert and coffee will be served by the hostess.
