Salem - The department of motor vehicles has released names of 452 drivers whose Lcenses were ordered sus pended during the period be ginning Oct. 20 and ending Oct. 24. ,. Length of suspension varies, depending on charges in volved, recommendation of court, discretionary action by the department or require ments of Oregon law. The de partment said some of the licenses involving financial responsibility and court rec ommendations may have been re - instated after suspension was ordered. The department warned drivers that the penalty for driving while suspended is a jail sentence of no less than two days and up to six months, and there may be im posed a fine up to $500. Under licensing procedures, this will also result in an additional year of suspension. TRADES WAGES UP - Washington MUPD- Average wages of union building trades workers rose one and one-half cents to $3.35 an hour1 in the third quarter of the year, the Labor Department has said. The wage level Oct. 1 was 4.6 per cent higher than the pre vious October, the depart ment said, and 63 per cent above the 1947-49 average. Engineer Board Certifies 20 To Practice Trade Portland -UPD- The State Board of Engineering Exam iners has certified 20 appli cants to practice professional engineering. They included Jack G. The new rider became avail able by Public Law 85-678, Brannock said, and provides up to $10 per month per $1,000 of insurance in the event total and permanent dis ability is suffered by the in sured before reaching age 60. The previous maximum amount was $5 per month. No payment may be made for disability incurred after age 60, and no premium charge is made for this bene fit after age 60, or the end of the premium paying period of the policy, whichever comes first, Brannock stated. However, the TDIP payments continue so long as total dis ability persists, beginning with the seventh consecutive month of disability. May Qualify Brannock said approximate ly 5 million veterans of the over 5V2 million having GI insurance may qualify or the new rider. There are approximately 85,500 veterans who have .the old $5 per month rider at tached to their policies. Those who meet the" health require ment may increase their cov erage to the new $10 limit for a slight increase in prem ium. Dividends will be paid on the TDIP rider in addition to those on the' basic policy, Brannock said. WALZER UPI Financial Editor New York - (UPD - This is a story of Western Union's ven ture into the realms of seren dipity. It's a little venture into a new commu nications me dium that the company says soon w i 1 1 be producing $2 million in an nual revenues. Elmer Waller ims seren dipity stuff is the process of finding out new things that you weren't looking for. It comes from a 204-year-old fairy story about the three princes of Serendip who al ways were discovering new things by accident. This WU item is called In trafax. It's a leased facsimile system with which businesses can sped their intra-company communications. It is capable of transmitting full letter-size pages contain ing letters, drawings, lists of statistics, maps or blue prints -in fact anything a company wishes to circulate in its vari ous plants and warehouses. Five years old, Intrafax has 2,000 installations and accord ing to the Western Union its demand is growing rapidly. The father of this device is the compact desk-fax machine used by 35,000 firms to send ! and receive telegrams in "pic ture" form at the touch of a button. It produces a product about the size of a telegram, about half the size of the In trafax product. Intrafax, says Western Union has revolutionized the speed of internal operations for hundreds of firms. All sizes of business papers and forms can be flashed in sec onds to offices where imme diate action can be taken. The beauty of the device which is about the size of a bread box is that anyone can operate it. Simply insert the message or map or other doc ument and press the button. When many sections of a com pany are involved the method is to transmit all items to a central office from which they are routed by an opera tor. Intrafax systems now in use range from simple transmis sion between two points in one plant or city, such as from the sales to the order depart ment of a textile company, or the purchasing to the shipping department of an electrical manufacturing company to big systems connecting dozens of scattered offices or plants. With business spreading out in wide areas, the system of intercommunication for the various units presents more and more of a problem. Used By Armed Forces The same applies to the armed forces. Just now West ern Union is installing a 12,-000-mile nationwide facsimile network for distribution of weather maps to 49 Air Force bases. In 21 Air Force bases in 17 states, Intrafax systems speed messages from commu nication centers to distant points in the same bases. Federal Reserve banks transmit billions of dollars daily by Intrafax in money transfers to member banks! Thirty-six branches of the County Trust Co. of West chester county, N.Y., verify signatures with central book keeping department when cashing checks. Many banks expedite credit information and loan approvals by the machine. 1 Airlines use Intrafax for reservations. Brokers are us ing them for orders between branches. Railroads transmit reserved space tickets and in surance companies transmit policies and other forms. The uses are so varied that, even Western Union is sur prised at the lucrative busi ness its venture into serendip ity is producing.
