6A MAIL TRIBUNE, Medford, Oregon, Thursday, October 30, 1958 Pickin Pears By SID HOLLINGSWORTH One of the most notable benevolent enterprises of the State Elks association is their participation in a nationwide undertaking of the BPOE in furnishing deer and other game hides to VA hospitals for leather work among handi capped veterans of the wars. The campaign is sponsored by the Veterans Service com mittee of the Elks, and last year $175,000 worth of tanned leather was delivered as part of their service to hospital ized veterans. The report of this commit tee is of special significance to Oregon, for it shows this state running a nip and tuck race with Montana for top honors. Oregon Elks obtained the most hides, but the Montana hides ran ahead in value, due, it was said, to heavier weight per hide. The Oregon report showed 5,923 delivered at an appraised value of $13,500. The Montana record showed 5,889 delivered, appraised at $14,444. California was third for the region with 4,798 hides valued at $11,487. New Mexico was fourth among western states with 2,155 hides valued at $4,566. The total for Arizona, Wyoming and Nevada was 438 valued at $966. Baker led Oregon towns in number of hides obtained with 1,136. In this area Kose burg led with 325 at $767 value. Myrtle Creek deliver ed 129, Ashland 91, Grants Pass 22, and Medford 14. After the raw hides are obtained, they are silted down, stored, and later tanned. It is a large scale operation and the Elks are so pleased with the showing that they have continued the drive this year on an even larger scale than last year. One benefit that may not be apparent is the fact that deer, elk and other animal skins are put to a worthy use In giving war veterans the incentive to get well. Another commendable ef fort in leather work at Camp White is the arrangement that has been made with Mann's Department store for sale of the finely tooled leather bags, purses, wallets and other items made by the more ad vanced craftsmen at the domiciliary.
