Kono Eastern Prep Loop Planned Pendleton (UPD A new ath letic , league among eight eastern Oregon class A-l high schools will be formed efectiye next fall. ' The new circuit will in clude Pendleton, Baker, La Grande, The Dalles, Bend, Redmond, Hermiston and Prineville. Five of the schools all but Bend, Redmond and Prineville are now members of the Blue Mountain confer ence. The new circuit will be called the East-Central league. The game will be the invi tational Shriners' Myrtle Bowl which is an annual ev ent. It will be played on the Marshfield High school foot ball field. Coach Al Akins has been putting the Raider squad through practice with a new variation of the winged "T offense which has been util izing the blockers in an at tempt to get a better running offense now that the passing appears to have bogged down. The new system seems to be coming along quite well and this could possibly be the spark the Raiders will need However, the Ramblers who wiir be heavy favorites Raiders Won In 1957 Last year the men of SOC came from behind to down the' Ramblers 25-21 and be came the only team to down the Seattle club in 12 tilts during the season. Seattle is a semi-pro club made up of ex-college and high school players who work in the Seattle area Physically the Raiders are not in too bad a shape with the exception of Punk Bid- dington, Ray Weinhold, and Herb Chapman. Biddington is the fastest backfield runner when he is in playable con dition and his loss has been felt sorely. Waterfowl prospects poor in Jackson county. Salmon angling in Gardiner and Mill creek areas of Ump qua river fair to good; good striped bass angling in Coos river above tidewater. Steelheading in Hogue has improved. Central: Good supply of valley quail in brushy area near irrigated lands around Bend; waterfowl populations about same as opening day in lower Klamath and Tulelake areas; upper Klamath lake has good duck population; valley quail hunting excellent. Northwest: Legal bull elk will be found in good number in Clat sop county with many medium sized bulls" in evidence; best hunt ing will be Sugar Loaf mountain. FIVE YARDS PiCX-UP Los Angeles Rams' fullback Joe Marconi picks up five yards against the Detroit lions, making like a wheelbarrow for the last few feet. Jim David (No. 25) and another unidentified members of the Lions brought Marconi down in this action in the second quarter of the Rams-Lions game at the Coliseum in Los Angeles. Detroit won, 41 to 24. Fanfare Vital Statistics: A Medford coach and a Jacksonville mentor had their football routines interrupted by the stork over last week end. Paul Evensen, Medford football line tutor and wrest ling coach, is the father of a six-pound future gridder born Saturday. Paul and Mrs. Ev ensen have named the young ster Eric. They also have a daughter, Paula. Dealous Cox, head grid coach at Jacksonville, was presented twins on Sunday by his wife. They have a fu ture athlete, Charles Benja min, and a future cheer lead er, Margaret Nila. The boy was named for Mrs. Cox's brother and the girl for the coach's mother. Coach and Mrs. Cox are the parents of three other children. COACH MISSES GAME Barney Riggs, head coach at Hedrick Junior high, missed the biggest share of his nuith grade team's foot ball game a couple of Fri day's ago because of the arrival of a son, Scott Rich ard. Barney and Mrs.' Riggs have one other son and two daughters. ADOPTED DAUGHTER Ron Lamb of the Crater high coaching staff and Mrs. Lamb are parents by adopt ion recently of a daughter, Carrie Lee. CRATER FIGURES Grid statistics: Crater high in compiling a 4-3 win loss record so far this fall has outscored ri vals 152 to 123 and oulnel ted them in scrimmage yardage 1,788 to 1,582, per game averages of 21.7 to 17.57 and 255 to 226. The Comets have gained 1.388 yards rushing to opponents' 1,320 and lost 134 to 232. They have picked up 534 passing to foe's 494. In first downs Crater has collected 89 and opposing teams 63. Pass completions for the Central Point club have been 42 out of 100 with six intercepted. The opposition has connected on 32 out of 63 with the Comets inter cepting seven. Kerman Bennett has tal lied 10 Crater touchdowns, Allen Barnes five, Wayne Allen, Loyal Higinboiham and Bob Fowler each two and Jim Eldred, Gary John son and Roscoe Day each one. Higinboiham has scored four extra points, Barnes and Fowler each three and Allen, Tom White. Harold Twedell and El dred each one. Ball packing averages per carry for the Comets are Eldred 7.6 yards, Bennett and ' Higinbotham 6.4 each, Allen 5.9, Barnes 5.8 and Fowler 3.6. Bennett and Barnes have been the work horses with 102 and 76 car ries each. Against Ashland last Friday Barnes had 152 yards in 18 totes for 8.44 per carry. TO AVOID TEMPTATION Ashland High Football Coach Varney Corey spent the first half of Ashland-Cra-ter game last week end in the press box directing his team by telephone. He's leary that he might have the temp tation to jump out. CAVEMEN HAVE IT RUGGED Ordinarily when a prep grid club has a bye date on its slate, practices are not so intense on the week of the open date. However, Grants Pass, which has no game this Friday, has con tinued with rugged drills this week. At least that is the report of the Grants 'Pass Courier. Medford high fans can bo assured, just the same, that the Cavemen are taking measures to have their crew in top physical shapo for the Nov. 7 brush with the Tornado at . Grants Pass. Because of the idle week-end, GP may be in its best physical condition of the season. The Grants Pass, team and coaching staff probably will be well-represented among the spectators when Medford plays at Ashland this Friday. The Tornado probably won't reveal any more than it has to. ALL SECONDS TO MEDFORD Medford high received the second place votes of all 16 sportswriters and sportscast ers voting in this week's As sociated Press high school football rating poll. Jefferson of Portland had all the first place ballots and headed the Black Tornado 160 to 144 in in third place, was well be hind the top teams with 96. FUNSTON ROOK GUARD Jim Funston, all-state football center and line backer for Medford high last year, is a guard on the Oregon State College Rook team and apparently is do ing right well. He's hand ling the strong side in the single wing system. GIRLS FOOTBALL Senior girls will oppose the junior girls in a football game at the Illinois Valley high at Cave Junction on Friday night, Nov. 7. The girls will elect a king to be crowned at half time. Boys are form ing booster sections and some are practicing as cheer lead ers. Gals of the two teams will dress in regulation foot ball gear. Warrant Awaits Return of Actor Los Angeles - (UPD - Actor Edmund Purdom will be greeted by a bench warrant for failure to support his two children if he ever returns here, Superior Judge Wallace L. Ware announced Wednes day. Judge Ware made the an nouncement after listening to testimony by Purdom's for mer wife, Tita, who charged the roving actor was S30.000 in arrears for the support of herself and their youngsters, Marina, A, and Lilam, 6. Mrs. Purdom, who di vorced the actor in 1956, said she recently had traveled to London to try to get him to make some of the payments but "he flew the coop to Italy." . Kane Regains Lead in Rushing Portland (UPD George Kane of Portland State re gained his Oregon Collegiate conference rushing leader ship this week following a 133-yard performance against Eastern Oregon last week end. Kane has 379 yards in 66 carries for a 5.7 average, fol lowed by teammate Bill Turr ner with 284 net yards in 63 tries for 4.5. Kane also leads in scoring with 36 points. Oregon Tech leads in total offense with 274.6 yards per game to 260.5 for Oregon col lege. But OCE leads in rush ing with 173.8 to 161.8 for O.TI. Southern Oregon leads in passing with a 147.6 per game average. Jack Brown of the Red Raiders tops the pass ers With 49 out of 97 for 781 yards. Oregon Tech and Oregon College meet at Monmouth for the loop title Saturday. Grant Reported In No Danger Oakland -(UPD- Boxer Don Grant was reported resting comfortably and in no danger in Providence hospital today. Grant, was was whipped by ex - middleweight champion Bobo Olson ' Tuesday, was rushed to the hospital Wednes day when he called a clerk at his hotel at 6 a.m. and said i he had been vomiting, had a I "terrible headache" and was having dificulty breathing.
