Fredericks was graduated from high school in Los An geles, and attended Fresno State college, where he ma jored in business administra tion. Prior to coming to south ern Oregon, he was employed in banks in Fresno and Eu reka, where he was chief clerk. He has completed studies in fundamentals in banking, ne gotiable instruments, commer cial law and economics, and served on the board of gover nors for the American Insti tute of Banking association. Caril Fugale's Jury Selected Lincoln. Neb.-UPD-The men and women who will decide the fate of Caril Fugate, 15, companion of mass murderer Charles Starkweather, were selected today during the third day of Caril's first de gree murder trial. A District Court jury of seven men and five women was seated. In all, 47 prospective jurors were questioned. Caril is charged with help ing Starkweather, her teen age boy friend, rob and mur der Robert Jensen, 17, last Jan. 27 near Jensen's home at Bennet, Neb. Under Nebraska law, the person who helps in commis sion of such a crime is as guil ty as the one who committed the actual slaying. Defense attorney John Mc Arthur said Caril will testify in her own defense. She is eager, he said, to relate her story that Starkweather forced her to accompany him during a bloody week of ter ror last winter when 10 per sons were killed. (UPD A four state alert was out today for one of the FBI's 10 most want ed men, sought for the slaying of one policeman and wound ing of another. A man answering the de scription of the fugitive, George Edward Cole, 36, San Francisco, walked into a drug store at Ottawa, Kan., Tues day just as two druggists were reading a magazine article about him. The man last was seen about 8 pjn. Tuesday head ing north from Ottawa to ward Lawrence on U.S. 59. He wa accompanied by a woman. All parts of Missouri, Iowa and Nebraska were alerted for the fugitive. Cole is want ed in connection with the slaying of a policeman in San Francisco in December, 1956. He also is charged with shooting and wounding a St. Louis officer in an armed rob bery in January, 1957. Eisenhower To Vote A! Gettysburg Poll Washington (UPD President Eisenhower will vote at Gettysburg, Pa., Tuesday aft er spending a long week end at his farm there, the White House said today. White House Press Secre tary James C. Hagerty said the President plans to drive to Gettysburg from Baltimore Friday night after winding up his campaigning with a na tionwide radio-t elevision speech. The President and Mrs. Eisenhower will stay at their farm until after voting. They will return to the White House probably Tues day afternoon. Hagerty said that the President plans to spend election night at the White House. EASTER RABBIT , Milwaukee (UPD James Rabbitt arrested Warren East er in a department store Mon day. Rabbitt, the store detec tive said, Easter was shoplifting. NOTED PAINTER DIES Broklin, Mass.-ttJPD-Andrew Winter, 66, a noted painter, died Monday in a nursing home. His subjects included sea and landscapes. Wainscott's Pharmacy 322 East Main Eisenhower Calls Space Council To White House Washington -OD- President Eisenhower summoned his space council to a White House meeting today to take up the explosive controversy between the Army and the new civilian space agency. Many authoritites believed the Army's future in space ex ploration and rocket weapons development was at stake in its fight with the National Aeronautics and Space Ad ministration. No Final Decision White House Press Secre tary James C. Hagerty said no final decision would be made on the matter today. NASA Administrator T. Keith Glenman also has pro posed to the Army that his new agency take over the Army's present arrangements with the jet propulsion labora tory at Pasadena, Calif., for space and missile work. President To Decide If the NASA bid is success ful the Army's hold on space would be considerably cut down. Up to Tuesday night, au thorities said, a compromise had not been worked out among the Army, NASA and the Defense Department. The President has said he would decide himself what federal agencies or facilities would be transferred to the new space agency which was set up under the space act of last July. Until Dec. 31 the President can make such de cisions without referring them to Congress. After that con gressional approval must be obtained. President Returns From Campaigning Washington - (UPD Presi dent Eisenhower returned home today from a two-day campaign trip into West Vir ginia, Pennsylvania and New York. The President made no statements at the airport but drove directly to the White House. The President was expected to devote a considerable por tion of today and Thursday preparing for his campaign windup. He will make his final address of the fall cam paign Friday night over a na tional radio and television hookup from Baltimore, Md. Assistant Named For Institution Salem (UPD George A. Al den, a veteran of 20 years with the federal prison sys tem, will be new assistant su perintendent of the Oregon State correctional institution southeast of here. Supt. P. J. Squier said Al den will be responsible for custody at the institution which opens next spring. The new assistant entered the federal service at Leaven worth, Kan., and was later transferred to the federal pen itentiary at Terre Haute, Ind. School News... Elk-Trail School By Janet Wehde and Peggy Johnson The addition to the gym is almost completed. We will be able to use it for Halloween. The stage is the full length and will be used for specta tors during games. There are new shower roonu, restrooms, and drink ing fountains in the new addi tion to the gym. The stage will need curtains, so the PTA is having several money making projects to help purchase cur tains. The first thing they are having is a rummage sale at the VCFW hall in Shady Cove, Saturday, Oct. 24. The following officers have been elected to the student council: president, Randy Sikes; vice president, Marga ret Hanson; secretary, Linda Scott; treasurer, Janet Wehde. v There are several new ac tivity clubs this year. Cook ing is under the-direction of Mrs. Eva Johnson. The Drama club is advised by Mrs. Ruth Sawyer. Roy Nolan is advisor of the Science club. The News paper is directed by Mrs. Dorothy Hume. Gary Monical has organized a Tonette band with third and fourth grade students. The library has several new books. Some of the new books are "The Fire Dragon," "Horns and Antlers," "Escape on Skies," "Joe Sunpool," and "The Tyrant of Baghdad." The librarians are Judy San derson, Peggy Johnson, Sheryl Barlow, and Val LaMarc. There will be a Halloween party in the gym Friday night at 7 p.m., Oct. 31. There will be a hula hoop contest and a costume march. The movie "Them" will be shown. Every one is invited. SHADY COVE-TRAIL Families Move in Area By EVALYN P. WATSON Shady Cove-Trail The in crease in the number of fam ilies now living in the Indian creek area is but a small in dication of the way in whch Shady Cove and the surround ing area has grown over the last few years. Ten families now reside on the Indian Creek rd. with property having been sold to another family who will pos sibly build. Rural mail deliv ery went into effect on Indian Creek on Oct. 18 and also on the Old Ferry rd. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Peter son of Whittier, Calif., visited their cousins, Mr. and Mrs. Art Greenley, of Shady Cove, recently. Mr. and Mrs. Harry Sum mers and Mrs. Tommie Sum mers of Buena Park, Calif., spent a short time recently visiting their friends, Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Copeland and family of Trail. The Shady Cove PTA will sponsor a Halloween party at the school Friday, Oct. 31, from 7:30 until 9:30 p.m. for children of the community. PTA members will assist with games and refreshments. On Saturday, Nov. 1 from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. at the Shady Cove fire hall there will be a rummage and plant sale sponsored by Our Lady of Fatima club of Shady Cove. Members of the club have col lected rummage recently. . M11 Jack Price of San Di ego, Calif., was home on leave from the Navy for a few days recently spending his time with his wife and family at Trail. He expected to be trans ferred to the Orient later this month. Dr. and Mrs. Howard Fer guson of Shady Cove are on a trip to Boston, Mass., where Dr. Ferguson is taking a two weeks post graduate course. Dr. and Mrs. David Morgan and family have mved from the Leo Tuttle home which they were renting in the Cove to Mrs. M. Morris' home. Mr. and Mrs. W. R. Bales of Beaumont, Calif., have been house guests of their son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Max Hawks of Shady Cove. Our Ladyof Fatima club is sponsoring a Turkey dinner Sunday, Nov. 9, at the church hall in Shady Cove. Serving the dinner will start after services at 11 o'clock and continue until 4 o'clock. 'Mr. and Mrs. Scottie Par rick of Trail are leaving this week to spend the winter in Lucerne, Calif., and plan to return to their home at Trail in the spring. They are going to ' California primarily for Parrick to receive medical treatment. Dolf Larson Jr., of Medford, son of Mr. and Mrs. Dolf Lar son, Shady Cove has complet ed six months Army reserve training at Ft. Ord and is re turning to his home in Med ford. He was employed in the office of supply at Ft. Ord for the last three months. Mystery of Tinsel In Fields Solved Pendleton-UPD-Ranchers in Eastern Oregon who have been reporting large amounts of aluminum tinsel in their fields in recent months had the mystery unraveled for them Tuesday. Officials of the Air Force Strategic Air Command said the two-inch strips of tinsel have been dropped in periodic runs by Air Force bombers and fighters over the area to be "picked up" by radar screens in the Pacific North west. Ranchers had reported find ing many of the strips in their fields. Strongman Lifts 915-Pound Elephant Hollywood-(UPD-Jack Walsh, professional strongman from Trenton, N.J., today suc ceeded in lifting a 915 pound baby elephant six inches off the ground by means of a harness attached to his two index fingers. Walsh claims the feat sets a world's record. Previously he had demonstrated his physi cal prowess by hoisting a 4,000 pound elephant lashed be neath him to a back harness. A record 10.6 trillion cubic feet of natural gas was burn ed by 27,000,000 American consumers in 1957. Clarence Gray of Medford, brother-in-law of Mrs. Harry Goode of Shady Cove and Mrs. Goode's sister-in-law, Mrs. Darwin Bevens, of Pros pect were hunting in the Lost creek area near the Upper Rogue Grange hall when they scared several deer out of the brush. It happened so sudden ly the hunters had no time to shoot but saw a deer leap a log and then fall on the other side. They went up to take a look and found the deer wounded with a stick through its brisket. It had apparently fallen on the stick in its leap over the log. Ralph Goode and Danny Wood of Shady Cove both had the experience of killing their first deer this season. Our Lady of Fatima will hold an open house at the church Sunday, Nov. 16, from 3 until 5 p.m. A tour will be taken of the church with an explanation to be given of the ceremonies of the Mass and also of the stations of the Cross. Refreshments will be served in the church hall. Mrs. Leonard Thompson was honored guest at a party given for her last week at the home of Mrs. Bob Vincent of Shady Cove. Guests were Mes dames Carl Hanson, Pat Hawks. Dolf Larson, Margaret Walker, the honored guest, Mrs. Thompson, and the host ess, Mrs. Vincent. Bridge was played during the .afternoon with refresh ments of cake and ice cream being served. Mr. and Mrs. Thompson left to spend the winter in their home in Monrovia, Calif., but plan to return again to their summer home next spring.
