f MATT. TRIBUNE, MIBFORB, 0X1. 16 Monday, October 27, 1958 Is That By OLGA BURNS Quick as he is to resort to chemical warfare, the skunk is actually one of man's bet ter friends. Take the case of the skunk and the ladybird beetle, or ladybug. Though extremely fond of insects, including most crop destroyers such as cutworms, the skunk lets the ladybug severely aone. This is a break for man because most lady bugs are heavy eaters of other insects. It is true that the skunk doesn't bother ladybugs be cause he finds them unpalat able, just as he does toads which are also great insect eaters. And it must be ad mitted that he does have a fondness for bees and honey that makes it advisable to keep the hives up out of his reach. But that drawback is more than offset by the fact that he is much addicted to wasps and. yellow jackets, digging them out of their homes when ever he finds them. Rodents are equally high on his list of favorite foods He is a constant hunter of field mice that are so destruc tive of crops, and as for rats, the smaller spotted skunks have been known to follow them into their holes. The striped kind, that may tip the scales at 10 pounds, can't do that, of course, but any barn he frequents will soon be ratless. And not necessarily at. the expense of some chickens. Some skunks develop a liking for chickens and hens' eggs, but if the birds are properly cared for the skunk will prob ably never develop a taste for them. Studies of the stom ach contents of hundreds of wild skunks show they con centrate mainly on insects and rodents with an occasion al frog or snale thrown in. The menu is varied somewhat with fruit, berries and grains. Lilile in Disfavor ' In view of his eating habits and the quiet manner in which be usually conducts himself, there is actually little to be said in the skunk's disfavor. Probably the most serious charge is that they have a tendency to rabies. That, how ever, seems actualy baseless. Some skunks have developed rabies, but since even rabbits have, to say nothing of vari ous other animals, and since the likelihood is that they got it from a rabid dog or cat, they present no special threat to man in that respect. . In fact, so long as a skunk is facing you, there's little to worry about. Just don't frighten him into turning around.
