Webster. Impetus was given the trend in 1951, she added, with the publication of the best selling book, "Gods, Graves and -Scholars," by C. W. Ceram. Interest" has been growing since. "Testimony of the Spade," by Geoffrey Bibby, a com panion volume to "Gods, Graves and Scholars," was published in 1956. In intro ducing the reader to the archeologists whose discover ies have led the way into the past, the book traces the story of the "barbarians" of north ern Europe from their cave dwelling ancestors to the time of Caesar. Two Recent Books Two other recent books, Leonard Cottrell's "Lost Cit ies" and Herman Schreiber's "Vanished Cities," tell about the once-great, long-lost cities that have been brought to right by. present day archae ologists. Biblical archaeology is de scribed in such books at Caigie's "Bible and Spade," Charles Woolley's. "Excava tions at Ur," Percy Wiseman's "New Discoveries in- Baby lonia about Genesis" and "The Secret of the Hittites," by Marek. Material is also available at the library on archaelogical discoveries in North America. Some of the books are Frank Hibben's "The Lost Amer icans" and "Treasure in the Dust," A. H. Verrill's "Amer ica's Ancient Civilizations," and "Under Your Feet; the Story of the American Mound Builder," by Mrs, Blanche King. Central and South American discoveries are de scribed in "Columbus Came Late," by Gregory Mason, "Yucatan," by Lawrence Dame, E. L. Hewitt's "Ancient Andean Life," and Hiram Bingham's exciting book about his own dicoveries in the Peruvian Andes, "Lost City of the Incas; the Story of Machue Picchu and its Build ers. Practical Information In addition to the above books, the library has prac tical information on how to become an archaeologist, how to find sites, how a dig is organized, what tools and ex vacation techniques are used, and on evaluating the finds. For such aids Gordon Wil ley's "Methods and Theory in American Archaeology," and Kathleen Kenyon's- "Begin nings in Archaeology" are suggested. A humorous light is cast on the subject by Elean or Lothrop in "Throw Me a Bone; What Happens When You Marry an Archaeologist." Slashing Victim Tells of Love Portland - (UPD - Alfred Gust, a Fort Lewis soldier originally from Texas, was found guilty after a jury trial here Thursday of slashing at a woman with a knife on a downtown Portland street. The jurors recommended mental treatment. Gust was charged with only one of three slashing in cidents that took place with in a 24-hour period last sum mer. A pre-sentence investi gation was asked. One of his victims, 19-year-old Patricia Grimes, attended Gust's trial and told newsmen outside the courtroom that she had fallen in love with the 21-year-old Texan after first feeling sorry for him. She said their romance blos somed after his mother wrote asking her to visit Gust in jail. Since then, she said, pity turned to love and now she will stand by him. Gust had no comment. He also was chairman of a panel of southern Oregon principals which appeared at the conference. The panel discussed the role of the ele mentary school in the guid ance program. Other members of the panel included Gene Farth ing, Talent, who discussed the role of the elementary school principal in parental guid ance; Mrs. Myrna: Frink, Grif fin Creek, who took the sub ject of the elementary school principal's role in teacher guidance; and Verne Spiers, Lincoln school, Ashland, who discussed the elementary school principal and student guidance. Twenty - one elementary school principals from Jack son county attended the meeting. Too much rain is a frequent agricultural problem in Nor way. Erin Merkel, public health physician. Eight of the cases were re ported in Phoenix, seven in Medford, five in Ashland and three in Jacksonville: Other cases of communi cable diseases included Ger man measles, Medford 2, Ash land 1; impetigo, Trail 1; strep throat, Ashland 3; MedV ford 1; infectious mononucle osis, Medford 1; pneumonia, Medford and Ashland, 1 each.
