Medford, Oregon, Sunday, October 26, 1958 Paulson Leads OSC jTo 14-12 Victory Over Washington Portland, Ore. -(CPD Half back Dainard Paulson, a fourth stringer at the start of the season, ran and passed Oregon State to a 14-12 Pa cific Coast conference foot ball victory over Washington before 29,057 fans Saturday. Paulson led two long Ore gon State scoring marches and plunged for the two points after Oregon State's first touchdown to provide the winning margin. . OSC in Bowl Picture The victory put ' Oregon State solidly back into the Rose Bowl picture with a 3-1 PCC record. Coach Tommy Prothro of Oregon State now has gone 15 straight games in four years without suffering defeat at home. Paulson climaxed a 79-yard Oregon State drive in the first half by throwing a 14-yard scoring pass to end Don Thiel Late in the third period the 184-pound junior from Ingle- wood, Calif., ran for 40 yards of an 84-yard Oregon State drive climaxed by fullback Nub Beamer's touchdown plunge from one yard out. Washington turned two of Oregon State fumbles into its two touchdowns. Puni Fumbled After Oregon State's first touchdown Washington's Bob Schloredt got off a 70-yard punt that Oregon State's John Horrillo fumbled on the OSC 15. Riverside Schloredt, whose booming punts kept Oregon State in trouble most of the afternoon, scored the final Washington touchdown late in the game from six yards out after Sam Hurworth recovered an Ore gon State fumble on the Bea ver 24. Washington had another scoring chance in the first half when Horrillo fumbled another Schloredt punt on his 20 but the Huskies couldn't move. Oregon State blew three scoring chances in the first half. The Beavers drove .66 yards with the opening kick off but Beamer fumbled on the Washington 14. Twice more the Beavers were turned back, although completely dominating the half statistically. Paulson had 88 yards rush ing on 23 carries. He hit four out of eight passes for 63 yards. He was moved into the starting lineup at the key tailback slot after injuries to Grimm Mason and Leon Criner. . Pep Barrone, Liston's man ager, took a cheerful view of the outcome a unanimous de cision for the burly Philadel phian. The nationally tele vised triumph was Liston's 14th straight victory. "We don't have much plans for the future," Barrone said. "Most of the boys ranked ahead of Liston (he is rated ninth) have been ducking him. After all, he had three straight knockouts. Now that this one went tht distance maybe we can get some action." Liston, 212Vz, fighting a standup battle most of the way, straightened the crouch ing Whitehurt, 190, repeatedly with left" jabs and staggered him in the seventh and the ninth. McLoughlin Skids Past South GP Outfought and out-hustled for quarters two, three and four, the ninth grade Bulldogs of McLoughlin Junior high managed to salvage a win out of a fotball scrap with new North Grants Pass on Friday, The sparkle and glint of the past few games was not in evi dence for the Medford school as it was outplayed for the greater part of the game. First quarter scoring by the Bulldogs was an off-tackle carry by George Clearwater after Jim Dexter had returned the kickoff to the GP 35-yard line. Five plays later Clear water cleared the coveted plane. Dexter's plunge for the PAT was nullified by an il legal procedure penalty and the second try failed. No scoring was done in the game until the early part of period four. The Comets, in command except for a couple of brief sketches, recorded their first league and District 6 A-l vic tory in three tussles while Ashland bowed for the second time in as many games. Scor ing was the most and victory margin the widest in eight years of contention between the two aggregations. It was Crater's third grid win over tLe Grizzlies who have down ed the Comets four times. One game ended in a tie. The Central Point school combined the running talents of speedy Kerman Bennett, big Allen Barnes, Jim Eldred and Wayne Allen in ambling to the triumph. Breaks gave tne ball to the Comets on the Ashland 19, 18 and 34 to set up touchdown punches. Cra ter moved 54, 75 and 69 yards for its other scores. Allen Scores Two Allen went two and 29 yards for Comet TDs and passed to Roscoe Day for 33 yards and another., Bennett swept 12 yards, Barnes a yard and Eldred a foot for tallies. Ashland touchdowned in the fourth quarter against Comet reservers with Alan McKinnis and Steve Gray sweeping 15 and six yards, respectively. Crater got its first oppor tunity when Doug Davis re covered a Grizzly fumble on the second scrimmage play of the game. The Comets covered the 19 yards in four plays with Bennett tallying his TD and Eldred running the bonus The 54 yard push got going when Dave Brown fell on an Ashland muff. Nine plays were used for the score with Allen ' traveling the last two and Barnes tak ing over the extra. The Comets were on top 14 to 0 at the quarter. In the early portion of the second canto Bil1 White par tially blocsed a Grizzly punt. Don Gillaspey nabbed the ball and got it to the Ash land 18. Bennett was dump ed back to the 29. Allen fadet to pass but saw a good gap in the line and ran, get ting a rousing block by Har old Twedell as he crossed the goal. Loyal Higinbotham carr ried the conversion. Fumble Spoils Try Crater got the ball on the Ashland 49 on a fumble snare by Eldred and moved to the home team's six-yard line and time faded in the half." The ball was los1 on a fumble and midway score 'as 21 to 0. Taking over cn their own 25 after the Ashland th'rd quarter kick-off. the Comets moved to the teal in seven plays. Barnes tan 37 yards from the Ashland 45 to the 12 and four plays later shoved the last yard. Derell William son recovered an -Ashland flub on the Crater 32. The Comets lost a yard, then launched a surge for another touchdown . Crater needed only four plays to go. the 69 yards because it -shook Barnes free for 52 down to the Ash- Bn Pis! rict j land three. Two plays lafer I Eldred covered the final foot. Crater's other TD came in the closing minutes when Glen Cote fell on an Ashland fumble on the Lithia City's 34. Don Gillaspey gained a yard and a pass' was incom plete. Then Allen hurled to Day- who turned and stepped into the end zone. Allen's toss to Higinbotham convert ed. Ashland's last hope for a score lapsed when Cote re covered another muff and the Comets ran out the clock. The Grizzlies appeared triat they might make a uattle of it in the first quarter when they had- a 31-yard run by McKinnis and a 20-yard pass play, Bob Voris to McKinnis, in a thrust that took them from their 28 to the Comet 19. But they lost the ball on downs on the 21. Wide Scrimmage Margin Ashland i intercepted two Crater passes. Voris and Doug Forrest snared. Forrest fell on a Crater fumble. With all its regular backs running well and the line blocking well, Crater outnet ted Ashland 243 to 69 in scrimmage yardage. Ashland Lions Foe Far Rams Los Angeles"- (UPD - The Los Angeles Rams, who sur vived a thiee-game road swing with a single loss, entertain the sagging Detroit Lions this afternoon in a National Foot ball League game that finds the , defending champs 10 point underdogs. . Los Angeles, never partic ularly successful on the road beat both the San Francisco Forty Niners and the .Lions before last week's disaster at Chicago, when the Bears wal loped the visitors, 31-10. The Lions, winners of the league title last year, haven't quite got underway this sea son, and have been unable to win a single loop game. Fullback Eennett displayed some hard running despite an ailing sci atic nerve and Barnes, the Comets' plunger, lived up to his halfback designation with gains on wider swinging plays. Quarterback Allen had some good yardage on option runs and Eldred was a con sistent gainer in addition to bottling up Ashland's Steve Gray in man-to-man defense on the Lithian threat. Most hunters report excel lent success from Malheur, Warner valley, Summer lake. and Sauvie island. The Klam ath marshes up to the present time have been a little stingy in yielding birds. At Malheur, waterfowl hunters have been averaging almost four birds per man, with lots of mallards and can vasbacks in the bag. Pintails and honkers also show well, but snow geese are few in number. A few stormy days have pushed an abundance of birds into the area, with prob ably the best shooting yet to come. Warner Loaded Warner valley is loaded with birds although the main flocks are not making use of the shooting area. About 100,000 snow geese and 50, 000 ducks in addition to good numbers of cackling geese and whltefronts are shuttling back and forth throughout the lower valley. , Despite the waiting game, some 30 hunters checking in to the management area daily . have been averaging better than three birds per hunter which is pretty good shooting on any man's duck pond. Again, as with Mal heur, the best shooting is yet to come. Klamath has been slow. Al though several million birds are in the Klamath area, few are feeding in the manage ment areas. Spotty at present, this nationally known duck and goose country should im prove as the season pro gresses. PER M Grade at Point Eagle Pointers Oufscore Douglas in Non-Loop Mix Eagle Point Eagle Point high doubled the score on Douglas Friday night, defeat ing the Trojans 38 to 19 at Winston in a . non-counting scrape between grid clubs of District 6 A-2. The Eagles never trailed in the scuffle and were in front 20 to 6 .t halftime. They had two of tilth touchdowns before Douglas dented the end zone. Bill Turner set up the first TD with a pass steal. Bill Skeeters ran 35 yards to score and Dave Huffman sneaked the extra counter. Turner went over for the next touchdown with a five-yard swing around end and got the bonus point on a buck lateral. Douglas fired back with a 60-yard touchdown drive but this was offsei when a pass, Huffman to Bill McCiure, clicked for 50 yards and a touchdown.- McClure led off the second half with a 30-yard toutn down jaunt off a reverse and Huffman made the score 32 to 6 by a two-yard' sneak. Huffman had recovered a Trojan fumble on the Doug las 45-yard line on the kick off. ' Douglas then scored on an end run and lateral play good for about 50 yards and a Tro jan picked up a fumble by Skeeters and ran about tne same distance to the pay stripe. Turner capped the aft ernoon for EP with a 32 yard Bulldog Eighth Clubs PG 50-14 Jack Lowery scored four touchdowns and Frank Van Pelt three Friday in Mc Loughlin Junior high eighth grade's 50 to 14 verdict over North Grants Pass. Lowery crossed the goal on three reverse plays going 30 yards or better each time and he tallied on a pass from Van Pelt good for 40 yards. Van Pelt ran a kick-off back 55 yards to the goal and counted up another six-pointer on a pass interception run. He was on the tabulation end of a pass lateral play, Dick Def fley to David Crocker to Van Pelt, which went 40 yards.' Line Plays Well A pass combination, Deff ley to Crocker, was good for 45 yards and a touchdown. Ron Calkins and Van Pelt ran conversions. McLoughlin headed 25 to 0 at the half and North GP got its markers in the third period. Coach Ralph Perkins said his McLoughlin line played an outstanding game, doing a good blocking job.' 1 The Bulldogs have a record of three victories and one loss now and face Hedrick next Friday in their final game.
