Hyman G Rickover, father of the atomic submarine, to the rank of vice admiral. - Mrs. Anne Wheaton, associ ate White House news secre tary, said Rickover would re tain both of his present posts, chief - of the naval reactors branch of the Atomic Energy Commission and assistant chief of the Bureau of Ships for Nuclear Propulsion. , Mrs. Wheaton said the Navy was raising the rank of chief of the reactors branch from rear admiral to vice ad miral and that no new vice admiral grades had to be created for Rickover's promo tion. ; The recess appointment for the controversial admiral must be confirmed by the Senate next year. There had been consider able doubt in military circles that he would be promoted because of frequent " clashes with Navy superiors over the nuclear submarine program. Mickey Rooney's Firm Defendant in Lawsuit. - Los Angeles - (UPD - Actor Mickey Rooney's company, Mickey Rooney Enterprises, was named a defendant Thurs day in a Superior court suit seeking recovery of a $10,000 loan. Republic Pictures Corp. filed the suit, charging that the loan was made to Roon ey's company in 1956 for pro duction of a television show. The program was never pro duced nor was the money re paid, the suit charged. DISABLING SPORTS Washington (UPD - The Air Force reports that 3,222 of its personnel were killed or 'dis abled last year In sports activi ties. The term "disabled" means lost to duty for one day or more from any type of injury. v Medford Man Forfeits Bail in KF Court Klamath Falls - Arthur L. Shoemaker, 25, of Medford, forfeited $50 bail in district court here this week for ex changing a deer tag with his wife. District Court Judge D. E. Van Vactor said Shoemaker was-arrested Oct. 10 on Deep creek road in the Bly area by state police. He' was ac cused of borrowing a deer tag issued to his wife, Judy. Cheryl Turner Back in School Hollywood-(UPD-Lana Turn er's daughter, Cheryl, fight ing to resume life as just another girl, has begun to attend classes at a public school just six months after she stabbed to death the movie q u e e n's underworld boyfriend, Johnny Stompa nato. Cheryl; 15, is a student at Beverly. Hills High school. And she's one of the most popular girls there. "She's so popular that if you say anything about her, you'd . have a hard time getting a date with any girl in school," said a 15-year-old boy who sits near her in one class. r "She's buddies with lots of girls, and they watch out for her." One of her classmates, a 14-year-old girl, added: "It takes a lot of courage for her to come to a school with . nearly 2,000 . students. All the kids know it and are very friendly to her." The deceased must have been employed by the govern ment or by the District of Columbia' for at least 10 years, including active mili tary service. Death must have occurred before Feb. 29, 1948. At the time of death, the de ceased must have been work ing in a position in which re tirement deductions were be ing taken from his salary, or must have been retired and receiving annuity checks. The prospective beneficiary must have been legally mar ried to the deceased at the time of his death and for at least five years prior to that time, must not have' remar ried since, and must not- now be receiving any civil service annuity based on the de ceased's government service. If these qualifications are met, anyone wishing to apply should fill out an Application for Death Benefits (standard form 2800). Maximum annui ties would be $63 monthly. Dr. Kreisman to Speak at Institute Ashland-"The Role of the Humanities in .a Troubled World," is the topic of an address to be made Oct. 27 at the Douglas County Teach ers' Institute by Dr. Arthur Kreisman, chairman of the Southern Oregon college hu manities division. Other speakers on. the pro gram and their topics include Dr. Donald E. Tope, Univer sity of Oregon, "The Chang ing County School Superin tendency in Oregon;" Dr. Harold Spears, San Francisco city schools superintendent, "Can Our Schools Profit by Europe's Curriculum?;" Dr. John Swarthout, Portland State college, "Power, Poli tics, and the Problems . of Policy;" and Dr. Victor P. Morris, University of Oregon professor whose topic will be announced at a later date. Dr. Kreisman also will ad dress the luncheon meeting of the elementary principals attending the institute on a series of topics of general edu cational import, and on Nov. 10, will speak at the Jackson Count Teachers' Institute. SOC Faculty Man Affends Conference Ashland-Dr. Alexander Pe tersen Jr., chairman of the Southern Oregon college phy sical education department, attended a conference of the Western Oregon Men's Physi cal Education society in Reno, Oct. 16-17. As a member of the pro gram and evaluation commit tees, Dr. Petersen took' an ac tive . part in the conference which had in attendance col lege and university repre sentatives from all the west ern states. He was . accom panied on the trip by his wife, Jean. . A member of the faculty since 1952, he has a back ground of secondary and col lege level teaching and coach ing, and has long been active in a number of civic and pro fessional organizations. Chrysler President L. L. Colbert blamed the loss on "the low level of automobile demand generally-as well as the ? reduced third quarter production due to the pattern of model changeover in the industry this year." Birch Appointed to National Committee A. H. Birch, 2810 Crater Lake highway, Medford, has been appointed to the nation al Veterans of Foreign Wars life membership committee, John W. Mahan, Helena, Mont., national commander, has announced. The committee serves to promote life membership within the organization, Ma han noted. Goldwaier's Mother Warned Phoenix -(UPD The mother of Sen. Barry Goldwater (R Ariz.) complained to police Thursday night she received five threatening telephone calls shortly after her son made a speech assailing "cor rupt union bosses." Mrs. Goldwater said the calls came from one woman and four men. One of the men warned her to "remem ber what happened to Victor you'd better watch out for your son." The reference apparently was to newspaper columnist Victor Riesel who was blinded by an acid thrower following his expose of New York water front racketeers. Paul Sexson, Goldwater's secretary, said the phone calls were part of a series of inci dents he believed connected with the senator's campaign. He said the rear door of his apartment was kicked in Sun day night while he was away, but he did not believe any thing had been stolen.
