MAIL TRIBUNE, MedforJ. Oregon, Friday, October 24, 1958 3 Truman Ready To Bury Hatchet After 'Apology' New York - (LTD Former President Truman said today he's ready to bury the hatchet with his arch political foe Vice President Richard M. Nixon on the basis of a Nixon statement Thursday night. "I'd call that an apology," Truman said. "Making up our differences is okay with me." Treason Said Charged Truman has in the past re fused to be in the same room with the vice president be cause, he said, Nixon had charged the Truman adminis tration with "treasons." Nixon told an audience Thursday night: "There is no war party in the United States. The only party of treason in the United States is the Com munist party." He also hailed Truman as "a gallant warrior" of the campaign trail. "Well, that was very nice of him," Truman said. Truman was told of Nixon's remarks by a United Press In ternational reporter, the only newsman present when he ar rived by train from Boston where he delivered a fighting campaign speech against the Republicans Thursday night. He appeared amazed when told of Nixon's "gallant war rior" remark. Asked if he thought Nixon was trying to make up their differences, Truman said: "Not especially. I think he thinks it's good politics. And he's right it is good politics." Former Guardsman, Now 80, Asks Pay Des Moines, Iowa lUPD Back in 1900, James Logan put in eight days of Rational Guard training at Red Oak, Iowa. Logan, a farmer, and 80 years old now, said Thursday he never got paid for the training stint. The prevailing rate, he said, was 50 cents per day. So, Logan demanded $4 plus interest from Iowa. "When the training period was over, our unit comman der told us to stack arms and go home where we could col lect our pay," Logan said. "We haven't heard from him since," Logan complained. D.
