J-'? ;!U V 4 MARVIN MADDEN (Democratic candidate for County Clerk) I appreciate the opportunity the Medford Mail Tribune has afforded the candidates to ex press themselves concerning their qualifications, platforms and other matters pertinent to the coming election on Nov. 4. ' Since there is considerable biographical material in the Voter's Pamphlet which all registered voters will receive in the near future, I would like to devote this space to a discussion of the manner in which I would conduct the county clerk's office if elect ; ed. ; Primarily, I think the most 1 important aspect is economy, but with efficiency. There is no question about the effic ; ient manner in which the of ' fice is being run at the pres ent time, but there is some question of costs which bear looking into. Those of you who have watched the annual budgets carefully will remem ber that the costs of operating the office have risen annual ly and as much as $15,000 for the -year 1959. It seems to me that the real test is whether the office can be administer ed efficiently but more eco nomically. To accomplish this a close examination of all ex penditures and the maximum application of all employees will be required. I am con fident that greater economy can be effected. Secondly, I feel that court eous treatment of the public is very important. Each per son's problems should be met with the same courtesy and dispatch to which he is ac customed in his dealings with private business. It is inex cusable for elected or hired public servants to behave in differently toward the, public. The taxpayers are the hiring agents and this is a fact that should be kept well in mind. If elected, it would give me great satisfaction if I could be instrumental in getting a great mass of the unregistered 14,000 people in Jackson county to tjie polls. It is a real tragedy when so many people voluntarily deny them selves the most precious right they have. It would be a very big job, but it could be ac complished by continuous work, publicizing the need to register, working with service clubs, farm organizations, precinct workers and any or ganization or individuals who would be willing to get out and impress upon the people of Jackson county that they cannot have truly representa tive government until every qualified man and woman is tallied. In conclusion, if I am elect ed to the office of county clerk, I would cooperate with other elected county officials toward the most efficient and economical administration of the office. Constructive ad vice would always be readily accepted as I recognize that an outside point of view is sometimes more valuable. However, if legal counsel were required, I would con tact the district attorney whose services are available at no additional cost. The duties and the authority of S "LS TV BERETH HOPKINS (Republican Candidal for County Clerk) I am seeking reelection be cause I feel Jackson county is entitled to benefit from the investment made in my five years experience administer ing the office. The program of reorganization started in 1953 is well on its way to completion. I want fo finish the job and guarantee that the progress made in estab lishing an efficient, economi cal operation will not be disrupted. I know county government; the functions and responsi bilities of the clerk's office. I feel it is vital that this of fice be conducted in a non partisan and professional manner. This has been suc cessfully achieved under my direction- I will assuredly continue to give to the peo ple of Jackson county the same businesslike and super ior service which my staff and I have-taken so much pride in developing. I have no ambition or desire for per sonal gain, politically or oth erwise. I wish only to be of maximum service to my com munity. I believe I can con tribute substantially through my experience to the overall strength and economical ad ministration of the local gov ernment. Jackson county entrusts to the clerk's office all perman ent and confidential records. We are completely responsible for their security and safe keeping. These records safe guard rights of citizens who own land, water rights, min ing claims; those who loan or borrow money; precious adop tion and marriage documents; j court records, etc. Permanent safety and security depends entirely on the manner in which records are handled and cared lor. "Not only must the legal requirements for filing and recording be ob served but the manner in which records are stored and preserved from dust, deter ioration, fire and theft is of utmost importance. Under my administration records are kept clean and repaired. Or iginal records which I found in a state of deterioration have been cleaned and many restored. If restoration was impossible copies have been made for public use; the or iginals carefully stored for safe keeping in a clean vault. Modern standards of busin ess administration and meth ods of operation have been ap plied in the four departments I established to replace the expensively disorganized man ner of operation I found five years ago. Probed Anzio, Italy - (UPD -British and Italian air experts today began an investigation of 'the crash that shouldn't have hap pened" the collision of a British airliner and an Italian jet fighter which killed 31 persons over this World War II beachhead. The collision, in broad day light and c r y s t a 1-clear weather, touched off an im mediate controversy. The Italian air force charged that the airliner- was off course, while British airline agents argued that it was well within the charted London-to-Naples airlane. Eleven Italian investiga tors, led by air force Gen. Do- menico Ludovice, met here this morning to try to deter mine the cause of the crash. Britain was represented by Anthony Milward, president of the Nationalized British Eu ropean Airways Corporation. The condtion of the wreck age indicated that that the U.S.-made F84 fighter ripped into the side of the BEA tur boprop Viscount, exploding its pressurized cabin and kill ing all of its 31 passengers and crewmen. the county clerk are well de fined and it would be my in tention to work within the definition of the office. If you feel that my quali fications and program are de serving, I would certainly ap preciate your vote on Nov. 4. I can assure you that I will work hard and conscientious ly to conduct the office of county clerk as I think it should be. Marvin Madden Vancouver School Head Not To Quit Vancouver, Wash. -UPD- A; Dale Whitenack, superintend ent of schools here, said on Wednesday he has no inten tion of submitting to a school board request that he resign. Board members had claim ed Whitenack withheld infor mation about a $500,000 fund in the school treasury at a time when the district was promoting a special levy to raise money. Whitenack said the board's decision to ask him to resign was a complete surprise to him. Collision Fatal To Portland Girl Portland -DPD- A two-car collision at the intersection of 52nd and Division sts., in Portland late Wednesday took the life of a 15-y ear-old girl and injured three other persons, none seriously. Dead is Dianne Eby. She was a passenger in a car driv en by Russel O. Cook, 17. Police said the Cook car and an auto driven by Cnarles Eugene Eastlick," 19, collided. Eastlick and his pas senger, Gary M. Imen, 19, Stevenson, Wash., suffered minor injuries. GET JET PERMISSION New York -0Ptt- Permission to operate jet aircraft out of Idlewild airport was granted today to American Airlines, the third airline to receive such clearance. ' UAW EXECUTIVE DIES Detroit (UPD Edward J. Cote, 57, a long-time member of the International Executive Board of the United Auto Workers Union, died from a heart attack Wednesday. partment. The fact that we have add ed only two new employees since 1953, in spite of the growth of Jackson county, is proof that new ideas and ma chines are justified. A bookkeeping machine al lows one deputy to accomp lish what would require two or more under the old system. A $400 copying machine re places one deputy; over $3,000 is saved each year. The addressograph prints poll books in less than 30 hours which required several hundred hours to complete under the old typewriting sys tem. I have given Jackson coun ty five years of sound, prac tical administration . and un selfish service. I believe an other four year term is justi fied on the basis of my rec ord.
