10 Thursday, October 23, 195S MAIL TRIBUNE, MEDFORD, ORE. Railroad Unions Divided Over Holmes, Hatfield Portland -O-TD-Some confu sion over whether the railroad unions in Oregon support Gov. Robert Holmes or Secre tary of State Mark Hatfield for governor appeared today to resolve itself into a split in union ranks. Officials of the Railroad Brotherhood's L e g i s 1 a tive League, representing some 8000 workers, declared they supported Hatfield for gover nor, asserting that Holmes' actions were 'c o.m p 1 e t e 1 y dominated", by Public Util ties Commissioner Howard Morgan. ' But the Brotherhood of. Railroad Trainmen said it would support Holmes be- cause he "has been as fine a friend of railroad labor as any one could ask." Not Dominated W. E. Stitt, acting president of the railroad league, said , "While we happen to agree with the Multnomah County Labor Council and the Com mittee for Political Educa tion in the endorsement? of many candidates, including ; Rep. Edith Green and Labor Commissioner Norman O. Nil sen, we want to make it plain that neither the council nor COPE dominates our actions, most especially where the governorship is concerned." Jerry Rutledge, legislative representative of the Brother ihood of Railroad Trainmen, said "It has always been our policy to support the incum ment who has befriended us and is willing and able to act with conscience." Graham's Group Bows To Governor Columbia, S. C. (UPD The group sponsoring a Sunday rally by evangelist Billy Graham yielded to protests of Gov. George Bell Timmerman Jr. today and abandoned plans to use the statehouse steps. The Billy Graham Steering Committee, a group of minis ters and laymen setting up the rally,' said it would be held instead at Nearby Ft. Jackson. The exact spot and time were to be announced later. Timmerman had branded Graham an integrationist, and said no permission for use of the state capitol steps had been given. Timmerman s a i d Wednes day night the issue was ; whether Graham's plans to preach on the state house - grounds constituted a "viola tion of the law of the land" and the principle of "separa tion of church and state." Rut Timmerman reaffirmed his first and foremost ob jection to the Graham rally, that the evangelist is "a widely-known advocate of de . segregation." The governor denied per mission had been granted for use of the grounds and said he would leave it to Graham's "conscience as to whether he will trespass on state prop erty." Chiang Honors Memory of Pope Taipeh (UPD President Chiang Kai-shek interrupted his talks with Secretary of . State John Foster Dulles on Wednesday night to pay horn-, age to the late Pope Pius XII. Chiang, a Methodist, paid his respects at a requiem mass for the Pope attended by 5, 000 persons in the armed for ces stadium. The President en tered the stadium five min utes before the Mass began, walked to the temporary al tar and bowed three times in Chinese style toward a casket draped in black cloth. He departed as the Mas started. Anno Alberghetti Not Yet Engaged Hollywood -(UPD- Singer An na Maria Alberghetti, 21, to day said she and conductor Buddy Bregman "are very fond of each other" but they hppnme engaged. UdVC livi. PROTEST PLANE SALE Mexico City (UPD Several hundred Cuban refugees at tempted a "march on the Brit ish embassy" Wednesday night to protest Britain's offer to sell jet fighters to the Cuban government.
