The 27-year-old Banks, who set a major league rec Title Bout Promised To Winner Long Beach, Calif. - (tPD -Welterweight contenders Don (Geronimo) Jordan and Gas- par (Indian) Oretga shoot the works in a 12-round rematch tonight, with the winner a cinch to face champion Virgil Akins in a December title fight. Jordan, rated the world's top contender by Ring Maga zine, remained a 10-7 favor ite today to repeat an earlier split decision over Ortega, who is ranked third by Ring and fourth by the National Boxing association. The match will be contest ed in the grand ballroom of the Lafayette hotel. Matchmaker George Par nassus says both Akins and the International Boxing club have agreed to give the vic tor a title shot at the Olympic Auditorium in nearby Los An geles Dec. 5. Langston Gets Lineman Honors Chicago-UPD-Jeff Langston, Iowa's left end, today was named the Big Ten "Unsung Hero of the Week" by the Chicago football writers for his play against Wisconsin last Saturday. Langston, who missed the 1957 season due to a dislocat ed hip suffered in an automo bile accident in Pasadena, Calif.,' before the Rose Bowl game, normally is on the third team, but advanced to the second team against Wis consin because of an injury. He grabbed a fumble in the air against the Badgers and ran 21 yards to a touchdown for a 13-0 Iowa lead, also made several sharp defensive plays and caught one pass. Second baseman Bill Maz eroski of the Pittsburgh Pi rates and pitcher Lew Bur- dette of the league champ ion Milwaukee Braves re ceived one vote each. The committee was composed of three writers w;.s composed of three writers from each city in the league. Finest Season Banks, a lithe, 180-pound Negro from Dallas, Tex., en joyed the finest season of his career. He 47 homers broke a record which he had previ ously had set in 1955, he drove in 129 runs and he bat ted .313. All this while play ing his position flawlessly. Banks is such a good hit ter that his defensive skill often is overlooked but he is rated among the best at his position in the long history of the league. In fact, some Cub teammates consider him as good a defensive shortstop, as Marty Marion, the ex-St. Louis Cardinal great who is considered the "master short- shop" of the modern era. Dick Bass In Offense New York-t;PD-A pair of whiz kids from the Far West are totaling the most mileage these week ends along the ma jor college football front. Dick Bass of College of the Pacific was the leader in total offense and rushing while Bob Newman of Washington State regained as the top pass er in the latest statistics re leased by the NCAA Service bureau. However, both will have to shake out of minor slumps this week to maintain their present positions. 672 Yards Althoueh limiteri in 58 yards against Cincinnati last week, Bass remained the na tion s top offensive threat with 672 yards gained in four games. He also was the lead ing rusher with 619 yards to his credit. Newman. hamDered bv in juries, has attemDted onlv four passes In his last two games, completing three of them. However, due to an ear ly season surge, he has a cred itable 49 completions in 75 attempts. Both leaders are beine hard pressed-Bass by Billy Hols claw of Virginia Tech for the total offense leadership and Newman by Lee Grosscup of Utah. Jim Brown Pacing Grid Pros in Rushing, Scoring Philadelphia-ffiPD-If there's such a thing as a sophomore jinx, Cleveland's James Brown hasn't heard about it. The former Syracuse full back in his second season with the Browns is setting a ground-gaining pace that av erages nearly 159 yards a game. That's about 64 yards a game better than Steve Van Buren logged for the National Football league record of 1.146 yards in 1949 with the Philadelphia Eagles. Brown added 153 yards last week to bring his four-game total to 635 yards on 94 attempts, for an average gain of 6.8 yards per carry. He also may eclipse the touchdown record as well as the ground-gaining mark if he continues his current pace. Denny Moyer Defeats Saxton For 17th Straight Portland-(OPB-Deny Moyer, 19-year-old flashy Portland welterweight, scored his 17th consecutive professional vic tory Tuesday night with a de cisive win over former cham pion Johnny Saxton of New York. Moyer, who came into the fight at 141 pounds, staggered Husky Backfield Full Strength Seattle, Wash.-ITD-Univer-sity of Washington halfbacks Carver Gayton and George Fleming, fullback Sam Hur worth and quarterback Bob Hivner all worked out today and were pronounced ready for heavy duty against Ore gon State Saturday. It will mark the first time that the injury-riddled start ing backfield has been at full strength since the opening game. Stanley Park, Vancouver, oasis of towering cedars and first at the harbor entrance, covers 1,000 acres. Tornadoes Eyeing Trip To Eureka Coach Fred Spiegelberg had his Medford high grid squad members back at their regular ofensive and defense platoon assignments yesterday after having all of them run of fense on Monday afternoon. The Black Tornado is prim ing this week for a road jaunt after having three straight en gagements at home. Eureka, Calif., a long traditional non league rival will entertain the Tornado this Friday night. Medford will carry a No. 2 Oregon prep rating and a five game undefeated string into the California fracas. The Loggers of Eureka re portedly have a record for the season of two wins and four losses. Most of the losses have been by close scores. One, a 7 to 6 nod by Areata, Calif., has been protested on the basis of officals' ruling on a punt. ' Beat Fortuna Eureka defeated Fortuna 33 to 20 last Friday. One of the setbacks was at the hands of a strong Del Norte of Crescent City, Calif., eleven. Spiegelberg had his Med ford aggregation stressing of fense on Monday in an effort to rid the attack of the fum bles and of the jumping which brought penalties in the Klam ath Falls game. Two linemen are on the crippled list and their avail ability for the trip south isn't certain. . Gary Heath turned his ankle in the Klamath fray and Gordon Pathman has poi son oak. Heath's ankle is said to be responding. Halfback Mike ,Hood is still, out of school because of the concus sion he received in the tiff last Friday night. The Tornado is scheduled to leave Friday morning for the California engagement. . Tornado JV Tops Eagles ' Medford High school junior varsity gridders won 23 tp 7 last night over Eagle Point jayvees. Bill Charley crossed the goal twice and Jim Barry once for the Tornados. Kim Grif fin ran two conversions and Phil Humphreys one: Med ford led 9 to 0 at halftime. A safety was tabulated -when Art House tackled an Eagle in the end zone on the second play of the game. Eagle Point got its touch down in the last quarter on a long run.; r PHILS SIGN PITCHERS Philadelphia-(UPD-The Phil adelphia Phillies have signed pitchers John C. Koski Jr. of New York and Sanford J. Hamilton of West Augusta, Va., for their Tampa club in the Class D Florida State league. He has scored 10 times in four games to lead the TD pa rade. The record also held by Van Buren is 18 for 10 games. Second in the scoring pa rade is the Chicago Bears' Willie Galimore with seven touchdowns. Baltimore's Len nie Moore has six TDs, and Green Bay's Paul Hornung has amassed 35 points with two touchdowns, eight PATs. B r o w n's teammate, Bob Mitchell, moved into second place in ground gaining Sun day traveling 108 yards over land to bring his season total to 370 yards. Tommy Wilson of Los Angeles is the league's third leading ground-gainer with 302, followed by Gali more, 267, and the Los An geles Rams' Jon Arnett, 265. Triumph his 150-pound opponent re peatedly during the last five rounds of the 10-round bout and hammered him to the canvas shortly before the fi nal bell. Saxton, making his second appearance since September of 1957 when he voluntarily retired for a year, described Moyer as a "good young fight er." But he refused to specu late on the young fellow's fu ture in the professional ring. Moyer said "I hit him solid ly with my right hand but it didn't seem to hurt him until late in the fight." Moyer three times knocked the mouthpiece from Saxton as he scored heavily on solid rights over Saxton's lowered guard and also combinations to the head and body. MEDFORDvSWTRIBUNI GDddsmakers Pick UGD, CDSC Elevens New York -(UPD- Oklahoma, Auburn and Mississippi are expected to have the easiest sledding among the nation's top-ranked college football teams this week end. The oddsmakers are quot ing eighth-ranked Oklahoma as a 28-point favorite over Kansas State, third-ranked Auburn as a 14-point choice over Maryland, and seventh ranked Ole Miss as a 15-point PAT Kicks Trail 1957 Statistics New York (CPD They're place-kicking like amateurs m professional football this sea son. The National Football league has the game's best place kickers. Booting extra points after touchdowns is consid ered "automatic." But so far this season, "erattic" is a more apt word for the "conversion specialists. They have failed to convert after 15 of the 146 touch downs scored in the first 24 games. That's as many as they flubbed all last season when they made good 338 times in 353 attempts.' Last year six teams the Cleveland Browns, Chicago Bears, Detroit Lions, New York Giants, San Francisco Forty-Niners and Green Bay Packers clicked on every ex tra point attempt in true pro style. This season such place-kicking experts as Lou Groza of the Browns, George Blanda of the Bears, Bobby Layne of the Lions and Pittsburgh Steelers and Gordie Soltau of the Forty-Niners have had extra point tries blocked or otherwise failed to convert. Groza, the game's master placekicker, has had two extra point attempts blocked this season. Groza, 13 years a pro, probably never has flubbed an extra point try when the pass from center was good, the ball put down correctly and his line held. Eight of the missed con versions so far this season have been blocked by the on rushing defense. The kicker usually is not responsible for these failures, but the fact re mains that some of the game's top' place-kickers are off to lousy starts. Webb, Meador NAIA Leaders Kansas City, Mo.-(UPD-Bob Webb of St. Ambrose set a record of 326 yards of pass completions and Eddie Mea dor of Arkansas Tech took over as top backfield runner to spark small college statis tics this week. , The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) said Meador ran for 239 yards and scored five touchdowns against Hendrix college to boost his average by 20 yards a game. The Ar kansas Tech back scored three of .his touchdowns on runs and two on pass interceptions. Webb, leading most of this season in passing and total offense, pitched 17 comple tions in 28 throws to break the 303-yard mark of Jay Roe len of Pepperdine, set last year. . " Seats Go Fast For Civil War Oregon State College, Cor vallis Some 3,500 reserved end zone grandstand seats placed' on sale last week are moving fast for the Nov. 22 Oregon State versus Oregon game at Parker stadium, the athletic department an nounced today. Over 500 of these were gobbled up the first few days. The sidelines of Parker stadium, except for some low rows on the goal line, were sold out about two weeks ago and the newly constructed south end zone grandstand, completed just ' before the home opener against UCLA, were immediately placed on reserved sale at the same price of S5 per seat. ; Some 1500 general admis son tickets and another thou sand or more standing room tickets will be sold the day of the game only at a lesser price. Reunion classes of 1933, 1928, and 1953 will celebrate at the OSC-Oregon Home coming football game. Bear's Doretti Out of Fracas Berkeley, Calif.-IDPD-Frank Doretti, first string California center, will miss Saturday's game with Oregon because of an ankle sprain, coach Pete Elliott sadly announced today. Elliott said Terry Jones would replace Doretti. " Second-string quarterback Gus Gianulius was listed as a "very doubtful" performer against the Ducks because of a pulled leg muscle. However, Elliott said Hank Olquin, another Bear who has been out with injuries, would probably see action against the Webfoots. Beavers To Be In Best Shape Corvallis, Ore.- (UPD -Coach Tommy Prothro said today that the Oregon State Beavers will be in their best physical shape of the year when they meet Washington this week end. Prothro said that halfback Jim Stinnette, who has been plagued by injuries all year, would see some action against the Huskies. The Cougars, led by quar terback Bob Newman, took over the official PCC total offense lead after last Satur day's games with an average of 335 yards, compared to 320.6 for California. Oregon is third with 305.3. Washington State also own ed the second best total de fense record in the league, trailing only Oregon in that department. The Cougars have given up an average of 211.8 against 191.3 for the Oregon squad, with Oregon State third-249. California's rushing offense has provided the Bears with an average of 240.2 yards per game, against 213.4 for Ore gon State and 198.4 for Ore gon. Washington State's pass ing attack produced 168.4 yards per game, with a spec tacular .657 percentage in completions for 10 touch downs. UCLA is second in passing with 146.2, followed by Oregon-106.2.. 138.3 Average ! . Oregon's defense-conscious squad, although losing two games, has held opponents to an average of 138.3 yards per game by rushing and 52.5 by passing. Washington State's rushing defense has given up an average of 148.4, a shade better than the-148.6 yielded by Washington. Washington State also is No. 2 in pass defense, yielding 63.4 yards against 82.3 by UCLA. Name Address.. 5 Braves Farm Teams Champs Milwaukee-ttJPD-The talent rich farm system of the Mil waukee Braves in 1958 led other major league organiza tions for the fifth straight year in winning minor league pennants. Five of the 14 minor league teams in the Braves' organiza tion won regular season titles this year. Three teams finish ed second, one third and one fourth. In 1954, 1955 and 1957 the Braves turned out four minor league champains. They had seven in 1956, the highest in the majors since the Brooklyn Dodgers claimed eight in 1948. This year's champions were Cedar Rapids, Iowa, in the Class B Three-I League; Yak ima, Wash., Class B North west League; Boise, Idaho, Class C Pioneer League; Mid land, Tex., Class D Sopho more League; and Wellsville, N Y., Class D New. THINGS at BARKER'S CONTEST- Football Game Kids Day Event Oregon State College The fourth annual Kiwanis Kids day football game, featuring OSC and California at Cor vallis on Nov. 1, is already drawing reservations from groups of youngsters all over Oregon. Already, large groups from Alsea, Jefferson, Gaston, Can by, Glendale, Heppner, and Polk County are planning to attend the special football game where groups of 10 or more are admitted at half price. Almost 5,000 youngsters and supervisors are expected to take advantage of the spe cial section. Two high school bands, Roseburg and Corval lis, will play from the section and OSC Rally Squad Mem bers will organize group yell ing and singing from the Ki wanis Kids Day section.
