Black Tornado B alters Pelicans 53-0 in Conference Grid Scran SOUTHERN OREGOV CONFERENCE STANDINGS Med ford 2 0 Grants Pus 2 O Crater . 0 2 Klamath Tails O 1 Ashland 0 i Pet. 1.000 1.000 .000 .000 .000 Medford's football Black Tornado roared to an early touchdown, became an er rant, sputtering breeze until early minutes of the second half then whipped a storming fury which defeathered the Klamath Union High school Pelicans 53 to 0 here Friday night in a Southern Oregon conference struggle. It was the most crushing blow the Tornado has inflict ed on the Whitebirds since the annihilations of 94 to 0 in 1927 and 51 to 0 in 1945. Medford ran up its fifth victory of the 1958 campaign against no losses and tucked away its second District 6 A-l verdict. Klamath, open ing its conference slate, tumbled for the fifth time in six games this s eason. Only one did the Pelicans threaten seriously and Med- ford's superiority was appar ent most of the night. But, after initial scoring march, the Tornado, trying but tense, and plagued - by penalties, fumbles and signal mix-ups, had trouble jelling its attack again. Then, after faltering moments of the third quarter, the Gale brewed up and there was no stopping the Big Wind of Pear valley. Big Third Quarter The Tornado got some good running from a host of backs and some fine blocking and whirled to four touchdowns in the third panel and three more in the fourth. Sophomore backs Danny Sieg and Dick Ragsdale each gained the end zone twice for the Medford gang, Sieg on a 10-yard run and 55-yard pass interception runback and Ragsdale on a five-yard slash and again on a poke for in ches. Skip Bennett goaled on a one-yard plunge, John Har vey on a 49-yard pass utter- ception return, Ken Durkee on a 47-yard gallop and Cal vin Dean on a six-yard jog. Mike Murray thumped the first five of eight conversion kick attempts. Klamath in the early por tion of the contest appeared that it might give the Torna do a spirited tussle. But the Pels only once had possession ft Kail incirl tho TVTaH- ford 47-yard line. That was at the start of the fourth quar ter. Tornado halfback Ron Reich muffed a Pelican punt and George Vinson of "the Pels fell on the ball just as the third canto ended. Slips Through Fingers -.' Medford defenders tossed KF back to the nine and two plays later gained back to the seven. On fourth down Jack Riley heaved a pass to Ron Olvera. The ball slipped through the Pel halfback's fingers and a golden touch down chance was lost. After its opening TD, the BATTtmS CHROME LAKES PLUGS! Next Med ford went 42 yards. It took six plays. A mix-up cost the Tornado 11 yards but this was made up for by two five yard penalties against the Pels and a 21-yard run to the 10-yard line by Ragsdale who finally boomed the last inches. Len Griggs Goes 41 After a 16-yard punt re turn by Peek, Medford was set back to its 25 by a clip pling infraction. However, Leonard Griggs got loose for 41 yards to KF 34. Four plays later Sieg went the last 10 yards to the pay zone. On the third Klamath passing at tempt after this TD, Med ford's Reggie Breeze busted up the throw by Riley. Har vey picked the ball out of the air and rambled to the goal 49 yards away. Score was then 35 to 0. When the Klamath big fourth quarter failed, Med ford fought from its seven out to the Klamath 47. From there Durkee slipped around right end and went all the way to tally. The Tornado fumbled away its next time with the ball but Pel hopes were again spurned by Sieg's TD pass interception sprint. KF gained a first time aft er the following kick-off but Sieg fell on a Bob Egge fumble on the Pelican 43. Len Griggs gained to the 37 and Cal Dean to the 27. Griggs then scooted to the goal on a reverse but Medford offside cancelled the play. However, Griggs went 17 to the 15 and Dean nine to the six. Dean crossed the pay-off line from there. Jim Clark, Mike Murray, Gary Winetrout, Gary Heath, Al Funston, Cal Dean, Dan Sieg, Lynn Knight and Fred Funston had big roles in Medford defense while Gary Kranenburg, Blake Griggs, Gary Burt, Gary Hancock and Estin Kiger had major contributions in Pel efforts to stop the Tornado assault. ' Fumble recoveries by Med fordites were one each by Fred and Al Funston and one by Sieg while Al Funston, Harvey, Sieg and Ragsdale intercepted . passes. Al inter cepted another but the catch was wiped out by a Medford penalty. Ken Durkee grab bed another KF aerial but of ficials said he didn't hold it long enough.
