When her agent refused to tell the studio about Joanne's unwillingness to take the role, Joanne confronted the bosses herself. Contrary to some reports, Jo anne does not have script ap proval in her contract and could have been put on suspension. In stead she was loaned out for an other picture, "Count Three and Pray," for which she won high praise from the critics. Her next film quickly nullified Joanne with hubbv Paul Newman in "Rally 'Round the Hag. Boys!" this initial advantage, however. "I was loaned to United Artists for 'A Kiss Before Dying' and ac cepted the part without reading the script. I don't know what made me do it, but I can tell you one thing: I never did it again and I never will." A few days after finishing the film, she demanded time off to do a Broadway play, "The Lovers." The demand was promptly turned down because the studio felt the part wasn't right for Joanne and that the play was poor. Joanne threw such a tantrum, however, that the studio gave in. The play folded in three days. Frequently Joanne's outspoken ness comes as such a surprise that people are caught off guard. Like the police officer who stopped her for going through a red light. "Don't say anything to offend him," her girl friend whispered when the officer approached. Ignoring her advice, Joanne turned to him and snapped, "How dare you stop me! Don't you see you're holding up traffic?" Before she was through, Joanne had him Joanne won an Oscar for her fine performance in "The Three Faces of Eve."
