The young man stood and watched the frenzy, hands in his pockets.

"The youno man in the baseball cap drove the tiny sports car
through the night with the ease of a professional.
He caught only a glimpse of the road sign ahead, but his
reflexes were quick. He braked the car down and turned in at
the Salt Creek Inn. He found a place at the back of the park
ing lot and killed the engine.
Pushing the cap back from his face, he stretched and
yawned. He scratched the day-old stubble of a golden beard
and climbed out of the car. He was very tall, a loose-jointed
man with an outthrust jaw. He was wearing denim jacket and
jeans, a battered pair of moccasins.
He walked slowly through the rows of parked cars, taking
everything in with obvious satisfaction. The moon was new
in the sky, round and yellow. It revealed a stand of willows,
a bend in the creek, the old stones of a millrace, and the dark
timbered mill itself, bright with lights and an inviting door
way into the restaurant.
Going in, he glanced over the crowded dining room and then
waited, his hands jammed into the slash pockets of his jacket.
It was a girl who came toward him finally, a straight-standing
girl in a dark suit, carrying an armful of menu cards. Her
face was troubled, her lips grim.
"Please," she said impatiently, "go around to the back."
The young man gave her a startled look. "That's not exactly
what I had in mind," he said, grinning.
"Please," the girl said, "I haven't time to argue with you
The kitchen's in the back. Tell Duncan I sent you."
The young man stood uncertainly for a moment, then he
shrugged and went out. At the back of the mill he found the
kitchen door, and entered.
