Mr. Rhoten was born Jan. 19, 1935 in Medford and has lived at Wimer 12 years. He died Oct. 1 at his home. On Oct. 1, 1954. he was married to Betty Miller, who survives. Other survivors are his son. Carl, his mother and father, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Rhoten, two brothers, Rich ard O., and Conley C- Rhoten, one sister, Mrs. Donald Haynes, of Medford, one neDhew and his grandmother, Mrs. Alice Richards, of Bea- verton, Ore. Burial was in the Wood ville cemetery. Services were held Sept. 27 ifor Helen' Payton, 65, who died Sept. 24 at her home in Rogue River, where she had lived for 16 years. She was born Jan. 22, 1893, in Anna, 111. Mrs. Payton is survived by her husband, James B. Payton of Rogue River, one daughter, Velma Marshall' of Rogue River and two grandchildren. Services were held in Grants Pass. A girl was born to Mr. and Mrs. Elvis Shul iz of W. Evans Creek Sept. 27 weighing 6 pounds 8V ounces. A baby boy was alsb born Sept. 28, to Mr. and Mrs. Don Elder of Sams Valley. The baby weigh ed 8 pounds, 6 ounces. Mrs. Elder was the former June Milton. . Mrs. A. P. Klomhaus, medi cal missionary stationed in New Guinea,- is- home for a short stay. Dr. and Mrs. Klom haus have been in New Guinea for some time and he is still there. Most of us think of pig or boar - hunting as a foreign sport, but the fact is it has been going on in America for centuries. Strangely enough, however, with the exception of the pec cary in the "Southwest, there are only two places in the country I can find where the pig has been elevated to the status of a game animal. One is Monterey county, Calif. The other is the Cherokee Na tional Forest, in Tennessee. The reason for this distinc tion, made only during the past decade or so, is not due tp a sudden official recogni tion of the game qualities of the long established razor- wife in Longview, Wash. Mrs. Ambre Blayden visit ed her friend, Sadie Siphers, in Sams Valley last week end. Mr. and Mrs. Leo Smith have sold their property on Pleasant creek to Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Dollar of Yreka, Calif., and have purchased the property of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Milligan on East Evans creek. The Milligans are planning to go to California. Mesdames Claire Douglas, Henry Bonney, William White, Jerusha Moore, Wil liam Paterson, Jim Whipple, Sam Bellah, Alma Shontz, and Larson were among .those from Rogue River who attend ed the Garden club convention in Grants Pass Tuesday. Mrs. Jerusha Moore was an honored guest at a birthday dinner Sfept. 29, given by her daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Bill White. Otner guests were her son and wife, Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Moore, another son and wife, Mr. and Mrs. William Moore, and daughter, Marilyn, all of Grants Pass. Several friends called dur ing the day and wished Mrs. Moore a happy 82nd birthday, Mr. and Mrs. Stromberg have sold their East Evans creek property to. Mr. and Mrs. Carl Peterson of Aequa, Calif., and Mr. and Mrs. Basil Frazier have sold their. West Evans creek property to Mr. and Mrs. R. W. Rowlinson of Dunsmuir, Calif. 1 The Fraziers have moved to San Diego, Calif. Mrs. Anna Dimick of Med ford has been a visitor at the home of her brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Carlos Magerle. Discrimination That, it seems to me, is a case of discrimination that should be adjusted by raising our own wild pigs to the same level. They, too, are of Euro pean descent" with an ancestry fully as distinguished though not so well recorded. In addi tion, they are unquestionably of the most redoubtable pio need stock. The razorbacks of the Mis sissippi river bottoms and other parts of the South are, many of them, descendants of the 13 pigs which Hernando De Soto brought with him to Florida in 1539. The history of the expedition proves it conclusively. As for those found farther north, they are descended from those brought over by the Cavaliers to Virginia or the Puritans to Massachusetts. In both cases the pigs multi plied so fast that within 20 years they alone among all livestock brought over were listed as simply "innumer able." Not only that but the English soon passed laws for bidding' Indians to earmark their hogs. Otherwise the whites could not tell whether a pig offered for sale by an Indian had been stolen. Chief Protection This earmarking of pigs, by the way, is the chief protec tion of a pig has today in California, outside of Mon terey county. Since the days of the Spani ards, pigs have been running wild in the Sierra. Many ranchers today earmark- their pigs arid turn them loose in the hills. If a 'man shoots an earmarked pig, he damages the owner. That there be, and hereby is, submitted to the legal voters of the City of Medford for their approval or rejection at the general election the following pro posed act of municipal legislation amending the Charter of the said City as ordained by the Council of the City of Medford by Ordinance No. 7044: CHARTER AMENDMENT REFER RED TO THE PEOPLE BY THE CITY COUNCIL AN ACT To amend the City Charter of the City of Medford, Oregon, by amending Section 165 thereof to exclude assessment for" sidewalk construction from the petition re quirements applicable to street paving. BE IT ENACTED by the people of the City of Medford that the City Charter of the City of Med ford be amended by amending Sec tion 165 thereof to read as follows: "Section 165. The City Council shall not have power to levy special assessments for paving, other than sidewalk construction, except upon petition signed by the owners, according to the records in the office of the Coun ty Recorder, of property to an aggregate amount of a majority ox the lineal frontage on the improvement to be made and of the area within the limits of the assessment district to be created therefor." SECTION 2.
