GEMINI MAY 22 JUN22 3- 6-19-221 27-61-73 X 1 1COQlTU IEO AUG. 23 7-10-13-31 The Medical Fatal Accidents Among Women "Statisticians of the Metro politan Life Insurance com pany recently pointed out that each year there are 23, 000 accidental deaths in the United States among wom en over the age of 15 years. Such accidents take twice as many Dr. Alvarez lives as are taken by diabetes, and about four times as many lives as are taken by tuberculosis. Motor vehicle accidents are responsible for about three- fifths of the fatal injuries among white women under 65 years of age. In 1954-55. accidents in or about the home were responsible for a fifth of the fatal injuries. The rest occurred on streets and places used for recreation and sports. Very few women lost their lives in industrial plants. With advancing age the number of deaths due to falls and fires increases. After the age of 55 there are three times as many lives lost from falls as from fires. The insurance experts emphasize what I keep saying in this column, and that is that the best way to keeep from being killed by an accident in the home is to keep watching out for sit uations that could easily lead to an accident. For instance, older people often lose their life by tripping over a long telephone cord, or a stool, or their dog. They break a hip, and then either die of pneu monia or waste away in bed. Old people are likely to fall while walking to the bath room at night in the dark. No elderly person should ever try to walk in the dark. A light should be left in' the bathroom, and all things that oould be tripped on . should be put out of the way at bed time. That torn place in the stair carpet should be fixed. For lack of a night-light, one of my old friends recently made a wrong turning in the upper hall, and, instead of stepping , into the bathroom, went tumbling down the stairs to break her neck and die. '. - The Inheritance of Ability One of my greatest heroes is Sir Francis' Galton, one of the first men in the world to make particular studies of the inheritance of abilities. Many years ago, when he looked over the families of 100 eminent Englishmen, he found that they had had seven eminent grandfathers, four eminent uncles, 26 eminent fathers, 23 eminent brothers, 36 eminent sons, and five em inent nephews. . Louis' Braille, a Frenchman who was blind himself and who died in 1852 at the age of 43, developed the braille system of raised dots for the blind. 5:05 Unble Bill Show 530 Life With Elizabeth 6:00 Weather 605 News 6 :1 5 Doug Edwards 630 Name That Tune 70 Whirlybirds - 730 Father Knows Best 8:00 Danny Thomas 830 President Eisenhower 9:00 Desilu Playhouse 10:00 TBA 10:30 Knowledge - 115 Sign Off TELEVISION Radio & Small Appliance REPAIR Work Guaranteed CALL SP 3-6241 TROWBRIDGE & FLYNN 214 West Main CANCH JUN 23 laaaaaaaAaaattaaa, GAZERO K POLLAN USIA SEPT. 23 OCT 23 IB 17-20-36-57STi P1-74-88-90HLJ scoeno OCT NOV 22 f35-37-40-45Oi 60-73-75 M1 SAGITTAtlUS NOV 23 DEC 22 1-25-33-59 rTl 164-77-80-82 CAMHCOCN DEC 23 iAhi 20 J21 -24-41-471 57-72 vJJ AOUARJUS I MM 24 tro Ma 48-5&o3 VSI nsas MAR. 24 SCc I12-26-38-490 B1-76-79-86V Roundup Emeritus Consultant In Medicine. Mayo Foundatiun Emeritus Professor of Medicine, Mayo Foundation Those persons who believe only in tthe value of environ ment should note that among the grandsons there were only nine who became eminent, and this in spite of the fact that they had back of them all of the advantages of a great family prestige, and every opportunity to get a good education. They had a wonderful environment, and yet few profited from it. Per haps what went wrong was that the sons of a great man each chose a wife for good looks rather than intelligence.
