Berle, who returned to TV last Oct. 8 after a three-year layoff, denied the charges. He admitted Roberts originally was. scheduled to appear next yVednesday but said: "We just felt there would be too many men on the show. We have Carl Sand burg and the Jordannaires all set for it." Berle said he expected Rob erts to appear on his Nov. 5 show, but the singer's person al manager, Ed Kelly, said he wanted no more tov do with the comedian. "They call him the new Berle," Kelly said, "but he's the Berle of old. He told Tony how to walk, how to smile, everything but how to brush his teeth. He told him how to sing, act, stage his song. He speeded his tempo, cut his time. By the time the kid went -on, he "was a nerv ous wreck." : t' "I never pushed the boy around,", countered , B e r 1 e. "I'm not the producer, just an actor. I never did anything except help him." According to Kelly, Rob erts has an exclusive five year contract with Berle's Sagebrush Enterprises Corp. The former Democratic president was expected to get down to issues immediately at a lunch honoring Mrs. Tru man and Mrs. Eleanor Roose velt. . Domestic issues appeared certain to dominate the speeches of both Truman and Eisenhower in the next few days. Truman has put himself at odds with , some members of his party by backing Eisen hower's . Quemoy-Matsu for eign policy, while the Presi dent said at his news confer ence this, week that "foreign policy ought to be kept out of partisan debate." Ike Clears Confusion Some confusion over" this remark as it affected the cam paigning of Vice President Richard M. Nixon apparently was cleared by the President Thursday when he gave Nixon an unqualified, go-ahead to strike back at Democratic campaign criticism of admin istration handling of foreign policy. Secretary of State John Foster Dulles on Tuesday had deplored the injection of the Quemoy crisis into the cur rent campaign, and Dulles' remarks were interpreted in some quarters as an oblique swipe at Nixon. Dulles later issued a state ment declaring Nixon had every- ngnt to answer tne Democratic criticism. The President, in his statement, said Dulles' statement "should clear the atmosphere." Truman, interviewed dur ing a brief stopover at St, Louis, Mo., en route to Wash ington Thursday night, com plimented the President for learning "at last" that foreign policy should be kept out of political campaign speeches. Says People Frustrated But Trumarf noted that "people are frustrated over foreign policy and particular ly farm policy. Those living Nixon Sees GOP Prospects Rising Salt Lake City - (UPD - Vice President Richard M. Nixon claimed here Thursday night Republican election prospects in the "farm belt" are better now than at any time since 1952. . - Republicans are "running scared" now, he said ' at a party rally in Salt Lake City, "as they should be in every campaign." Nixon was to address a gathering at .Brigham Young university in Provo, today, and then fly on to speeches at Casper and Cheyenne, Wyo., and Denver. The top Republican party's campaigner, who has made speeches across the nation in recent weeks, said a "shift" from Democrats to Republi cans started to take place about 10 days ago. He said the Democrats have "run out of issues." . Nixon termed the Truman administration "the most cor rupt in history" and the Ei senhower administration "one of the most honest in the his tory of the United States." Therefore, he said, the Demo crats gave up campaigning on corruption in government. : He said the Democrats also gave up talking about the "missiles gap" because they found it was caused by the Truman administration and was being "closed by the Ei senhower administration." Pear Tree Spray Recommended Now All pear trees should be sprayed before the fall rains come, recommended Clifford B. Cordy, county horticultural agent. Purpose of such a spray is to control a canker which at tacks the limbs and trunks of young pear trees, Cordy said. As long as the bark is smooth the tree is susceptible to this disease, Cordy said. Older trees with rough bark are rarely affected. ' Recommended dosage is eight pounds of 50 per cent neutral copper and two ounces of X-77 per 100 gal lons of water. The trunk and larger branches should be thoroughly sprayed with" this solution. Spraying of the young wood is not necessary, the horticultural agent said. in agricultural states are wor ried, and they've got a right to be." Eisenhower sets out today on a' 5,000-mile political ex pedition to add muscle and unity to the -Republican elec tion campaign. First stop on his winging visits with the voters was this afternoon at Cedar Rapids, Iowa. His major effort will come in California, where he will be trying to patch; up GOP family differences and pick up election:, prospects for the Republican'ticket there. Nixon, in a speech Thurs day night at Salt Lake City where he was continuing his Far West swing, said it was the responsibility of adminis tration cabinet members-but not the secretary of state-to go out and fight for Republi can - policies during the clos ing weeks of the election cam paign. , . ' Predicts Vote Shift He said "hundreds of thous ands of votes will be shifted from the Democratic to Re publican candidates in key House and Senate races" if the members of the Presi dent's cabinet would "fight . . . effectively and articulate ly for their policies.". . Two cabinet officers did speak up. In a speech at Muskegon, Mich., Thursday night Labor Secretary James P. Mitchell said labor reform legislation would be the first order of business next Janu ary if voters elect a Repub lican Congress Nov. 4. He dared Democratic congression al leaders to make the same promise. He also charged Democrats had created a campaign issue by falsely accusing Republi- MAIL TRIBUNE, Medford, Oregon, Friday. "House Democrats treated labor reform legisla tion like a skunk at a picnic," Mitchell declared. . ; Secretary of Agriculture Ezra Taft Benson, in a speech prepared for delivery today at Chicago, said the Eisen hower administration had turned back "a tidal drift to ward a socialized agricul ture." - He said the administration, had waged "a long hard fight to change farm legislation to a basis of sound economic prin ciples and away from politi cal expediency.
