Nightclub Singer Arrested by Police Las Vegas, Nev.-ttiPD-Night-club singer Billy Daniels and a friend face charges of drunk and disorderly conduct today following an argument with the occupants of another car in the middle of a busy down town street. Daniels, 43, who is current ly appearing at the Stardust Hotel, and Ted. G. Flaherty, 41, special officer at a down town casino, were jailed Thursday after occupants in the second auto said the en tertainer and Flaherty used objectionable language. Both were released on $150 bond. Police Sgt. Dick Dunn said the cars halted in the middle of the busy street where both parties -continued arguing. The occupants of the other car were not identified. While in Portland 'Graham plans to attend the DAV state rehabilitation and finance committees meetings. Graham said he also plans to hold a departmental executive com mittee meeting. En route Graham will at tend a District 3 meeting in Forest Grove and will make a visitation in Roseburg. He plans to be out of Medford a week, Graham said. Bing's Son Fined on Drunk Driving Charge Hollywood - (UPD - Bing Crosby's son Lindsay, 20, was fined $263 for drunk driving Thursday when he changed his plea from innocent to guilty. Young Crosby, who has four more months active duty with the Army, is now on fur lough. He was arrested last Sept. 11 when he failed a sobriety test given to him after his automobile struck a parked auto. BUY EQUIPMENT . Washington - (UPD - The Civil Aeronautics Administra tion is purchasing ultra high speed equipment to transmit weather reports fast enough for the jet age. Two New Jets, Lethal Missile Among Weapons Earmarked for U.S. Forces Las Vegas, Nev.- (ITD -Two new jets that fly twice the speed of sound and a lethal missile called the Bullpup to day were slated for early in troduction into America's tactical air forces. The new jet fighters that will multiply Air Force strik ing power for small or big wars are the Republic F105 Thunderchief and the Lock heed F104C Starfighter, a ground attack version of the current F105 Interceptor. The Martin Bullpup is a guided missile launched by fighter planes three miles from the target, enabling pilots to avoid heavy enemy fire in the immediate target area. The Air Force put these and other new weapons through awesome demonstra tions Thursday at the complex of air bases and gunnery ranges near Las Vegas where it is holding its annual weap ons competition. For Strike Forces The planes, whose speed makes them tough to defend against, and missiles are ear marked for air strike forces of the Tactical Air Command, like those dispatched to the Middle East and Formosa areas in the crises of the last few months The tactical forces' mission is to deter war and, failing that, to deliver nuclear or con ventional bombs, support ground troops and provide air defense in combat theaters. . Lockheed test pilot Lou Schalk demonstrated the speed of the new F104C when he flew it here from Palmdale, Calif., about 250 miles, in barely more than 10 minutes. It took several hundred ob servers that long to load into buses and ride six blocks, to the Nellis Air Force Base flight line to greet the plane.' Gen. 'O. P. Weyland, tacti cal air , commander, said the F104C can carry the "com plete span of offensive weap- one," evidently meaning that it, like the F105 Thunderchief, can carry at least a "small" hydrogen bomb. It "can be re fueled in flight for long mis sions. Breaks Speed Record Lockheed Executive Vice President D. J. Haughton said the F104C can fly 100 miles an hour faster than the F104 Interceptor, which currently holds the world's speed record of 1,404 mph. Reorganization Of Executive Branch Suggested Salem "-(UPD - The Legisla tive Committee on Govern m e n t Reorganization has recommended that the gov ernor W given authority to prepare and submit to the Legislature plans for reorgani zation of the executive branch of state government. -. The plan would take effect if the Legislature did not re ject it by resolution. The ' recommendation was part of a final report sub mitted by the committee which is headed by Sen. Dan Thiel, Astoria. Other major recommenda tions: A department of natural re sources should be created within which " state agencies dealing with natural resources might be grouped. Single Tax Director The secretary of state and Department of Finance as far as possible should work to gether with the object of de veloping and improving fiscal procedures and controls. Legislative consider a 1 1 o n should be given to proposals of previous interim commit tees that a department of revenue be created With a single director in place of the present three member State Tax Commission. Investment of state funds should be made a responsi bility of the state treasurer and the State Bond Commis sion should be abolished. Administra tion of the state's program for personnel management should be strengthened by assigning re sponsibility for such adminis tration to a director appoint ed by the governor. The civil service commission would, be continued. Retirement Change . The present law on retire ment should be amended to allow the continuance' of an employee in service after reaching. retirement age un less the administrator of the agency decides it is not in the public interest that he be con tinued. A division' of licensing serv ices should be established with a director appointed by the governor. " Agricultural com m o d i t y commissions should be made more responsible to the pro ducers who support their ac tivities. "Legislation embodying many of the proposals has been or is being prepared by the legislative counsel here for presentation in the 1959 Legislature. U.S. Bond Sales $55,820 in County County saving bond sales for September were $55,820, and state sales totaled $2, 740,090, according to a drive spokesman today. Sales in this county for the first nine months of the year totaled $666,986 compared with $708,279 for the first nine months of last year. The first figure represents 67.9 per cent of the 1958 quota. The U.S. Treasury's bond division is putting greater em phasis on its school savings stamp program, the county chairman said. "I know of no better way to establish sound habits of thrift among' our children than through such plans as the school savings stamp pro gram," the county chairman added.
