One Killed, Two Hurt In Highway 39 Crash Klamath Falls -d'PD- One person was killed and two others seriously injured Wed nesday in a two vehicle col lision on Highway 39 near here. - V Dead was Bernard Leo Woods, 63, - Klamath Falls, driver of an empty cattle truck that collided with an auto belonging to Mr! and Mrs. John Bush of Tule lake, Calif. . . : ' ; Backstairs: Ike Sold on Helicopters By MERR1MAN SMITH United Press International Washington - (DPD - Back stairs at the White House: President Eisenhower is fin ally sold on helicopters as a mode of transportation and he can be ' expected to use them increasingly the rest of the time he occupies the White House. His trip to the West Coast Friday will be the first time a president has used the "choppers"; on a , political tour. In three towns, Cedar Rapids," Iowa, Los Angeles and San Francisco, he'll elim inate the, long, motorcades from the airports into town by buzzing over the treetops in a whirly-bird. The White House figures that since most of the missed auto mileage would have been over express highways,. ' the President won't be passing up many spectators. . : The helicopters present many , problems , that won't show up in White House an nouncements. For one thing, the' armed services that! pro vide the choppers must check out a number of flight crews crews far in advance.. The White House will accept only the finest pilots; ; The equipment itself must be carefully examined well ahead of . time and i ferried over appreciable distances in the case pf a town like Cedar Rapids.- .' '; r-;, ir,- c - W h e r e Secret Service agents once had to : check only one airport in a town, they now have to make ex haustive . security investiga tions of the airport and the site in town, selected as a White House heliport for the day. 1 The western 1 trip could wean the President complete ly away from long motor cades through : areas . where there . are no spectators. His reasoning on this trip is that he accomplishes' absolutely nothing riding along an ar terial throughway with no one to greet except the motor cycle -policemen breezing along outside his car. - Use of a helicopter .means a lot of time saved for the President- and a world of headaches for the people who travel with him, the people who have to rush such things as speaking lecterns, flags and presidential seals to ho tels and areas were he is to speak.. The headaches are rather formidable, too, for reporters and photographers who must travel by car upon arrival at the scene of a presidential visit. For "f security - reasons, the White House and the armed forces would not per mit the reporters to send a fleet of : hired helicopters along in the President's wake. They'll have to get into town ahead of him and race like the dickens to beat him' to the speaking site. ; ' .y r ; ' MAIL TRIBUNE, Medford, Oregon, Thursday, October 16, 1958 7 Section of Mysterious East Squats " Among Shopping Section of Fifth Ave. The" problems posed by helicopters are ' nothing ,to what they'll be for many men and women in; the White House orbit when the Presi dent-gets his jet transport?) plane sometime next year. ' Those whose duty it is to follow a president on his travels will have to be trans ported on his plane, fly a chartered jet transport which may be out of any reasonable financial reach for some time to come, or start out many hours ahead of him. The type of -helicopter cur rently favored by the Presi dent is a nine-passenger job with, a , crew of three. For the most part on his western swing, he'll be using Navy or Marine Corps machines for his short hops. These choppers are fine places for solitude, even with a cabin full of people. The noise is sd terrific that con versation is too much of a chore to be . undertaken , in anything but short, loud barks. "'" The great Takashfmaya de partment' store, of vTokyo, Osaka, and -i Kyoto (annual business volume in Japan, more than $7,000,000) has in vaded America with a Fifth Avenue branch. If you do your dickering right, you can get a black onaga dori, with a nine-foot tail, already : stuffed and mounted on a pedestal to spruce up your living room elegance, for as little as $1,000. Onaga dori? That's Japanse for "long-tail rooster." , No body - but nobody. is going to undersell Takashimaya's on staffed longtail roosters. If you are wililng to take a little shorter tail, there's a seven footer, white, available for $750. Not Chicken Little "Those . are suggested re tail prices,' said ; Michio Kushi, a vice president of the American branch, looking at the ' nine-and sev e-n-foot perches where the two speci mens sat with plumey tails hanging like trails of glory to the floor. . "Chickens," Kushi con tinued, "have been very cele brated in Japan from the be ginning of our history - and the '. long-tail ones particular ly, which are used, for festi vals and . celebrations. Only one part of Japan makes this chicken,: and; the . .long-tails come by selective breeding over hundreds of years. There are only two or three in Japan now with nine-foot tails." But how can you get the things in. your living room? "You can , drape the tail like this," Kushi said, making a serpentine" motion with his hand, like a multiple-curved s. ;. Gaudy Headdresses, Too , The Takashima store, done to the gills in Japanses decor, will be dedicated formally Friday and opened to the pub lic Saturday. At a press pre view, some things appeared on sales counters that should give Macy and Gimbel pause. Atop one counter, the shelves of which contained razor-sharo Japanese hard- steel cooking knives, was a headdress so outrageously gaudy with brass horns, gold and black crown, rich cloth hangings, and a gold dragon at the forehead that it seemed like a boy's-nightmare space helmet. Price, $81.95. "This is called a kabuto," said the salesgirl, a kimonoed chick from Tokyo. "They are made same as original hel mets Japanese army officers wore about 600 years ago. Now used for decoration, not wear; Lots of . people give these as presents for the first boy is born. Always used for decorate, " on '. our May 5 'Oseku' Boys' Festival." Navy Sets Session On Test Failure Cape Canaveral, Fla. - (UPD -The Navy was expected to hold a' high-level session to day on the failure of its latest Polaris test rocket in a limited-power flight. ' ' ; v The 26-foot rocket, an ad vanced version of the Polaris, burst apart like a jack-in-the-box Wednesday, and half of the vehicle streaked low over the cape. Seven seconds later, the range safety officer flip ped a Switch to cut the flight short and the top section of the rocket exploded and burn ed in a.yacant field. .... . ; ., However, .there were no in juries' and no property .dam aged.
