Crater Hosts Yreka Miners on Friday Central Point-Don and Ron Gillaspey may have starting assignments as linebackers Friday night when the Crater Comets entertain the Yreka, Calif., football team here. Coach Leonard Warren said the two brothers did good work yesterday in backing up the reserve, line against the firt offensive crew. By using ' jin, he can give rests to cen ter Bill White, who played the whole Medford game last week end, and to halfback Allen Barnes, who was shak en up in the Tornado mix. Because of the bumps and bruises suffered against Med ford, Warren has avoided con tact work this week but the Comets did have some contact scrimmage yesterday as they geared their own' offense and prepped to meet the multiple attack of the Miners. Brown Hurts Wrist The scrimmage did result in one re-injury with regular tackle Dave Brown banging a Ashland Contends With GP Cavemen Ashland '"We're-1 not going down there to get licked." With those - words', Coach Varney Corey of the 'Ashland high Grizzlies surrfmed up the attitude of its-squad as gird ed for its opening Southern Oregon conference football fame. Newman wrenched his knee in the opening minutes of the Idaho game last week and was reported out for three weeks, but trainer Eddie Lane re ported today that the knee has been responding '.'almost miraculously" to treatment, so that Newman could see limited action Saturday. The Comets, who did a fine job in a losing cause against Medford last week, will be expecting anything from Yre ka. Miner offense includes short punt, single wing and T plays. Crater will look to the re sult of the Yreka fracas to de termine what it may do against one Southern Oregon conference foe. The Comets on Oct. 24 oppose Ashland which won 6 to 0 from the Miners. Warren indicated that quar terback Wayne Allen and Barnes should be able to play. Both suffered concussions and missed the second half of the Medford game. They have taken it easy this week al though Barnes ran in drills yesterday. A disadvantage of playing on a rivalfield but will hope to capitalize on their role as un 'derdog. The Cave men of GP fought to a score less deadlock with Roseburg which won 33 to 0 from Ash land. Hope to Move Ball The Grizzlies, nevertheless, hope to have an attack in order this week which will move the ball . across the goal line against a reputedly stout Grants Pass defense. Among items of business this week have been efforts to improve team timing and to provide protection for the passer. Corey has ,had the squad also back at a lot of hard work on fundamentals, tackling and blocking. "We are working hard to take up the slack," he reported and he indicated that the crew is intact physically and that no big changes in the line-up are anticipated. Punk Biddington and Del Brood both recovering from injuries early in the season are showing very good recov ery according to SOC mentor Al Akins. Biddington got into action for the first time last week against Portland State and proved a definite aid in rush ing and pass receiving. Brood, on the other hand, is mainly a runner of the broken field type although he can perform well as a receiver and blocker. Akins has also been experi menting with Pedro Colley and Neil Green in the offen sive lineup to give it more weight and power. Colley weighs 290 and Green is right at 200. Jack Brown and Lance Locke continue to pass in the workouts. There is still action being shown in the rushing end of things, too, although not too much. The Raiders will be battling for possession of the Owl and to keep their own Tomahawk which they have held since the last -basketball game which they won. Should the Techmen win they would gain possession of both trophies until the Raiders should win when basketball season rolls around. In the event of a tie the trophies remain in the hands of the team they were from the previous contest. Southern Oregon college students will charter two busses for the trip in addition to the car caravan that will be leaving from the SOC campus at 11:30 Saturday morning so as to arrive in time for the game which starts at 2 p.m. NE Team 2nd In Small School Gridiron Rating New York -(UPD-Mississippi Southern strengthened its grip on first place today in the United Press International small college football ratings while . Cus Trims Wings of Promoter By JACK CUDDY New York-ttJPD-Cus D'Ama to clipped the wings of Emil Lance today. The fiery manager of Floyd Patterson announced that pro moter Lence has "absolutely no authority to make a match for the heavyweight cham pion." Angry Cus added, "If there's any match to be made, I'll make it-and if it's for New York, I may let Lence promote it. That is-if he con ducts himself properly." Stocky, white-haired Cus blamed Lence "for continu ally popping off" during the recent negotiations for a Pat terson defense at Madison Square Garden "and putting me in an unfavorable light" when the negotiations fizzled out on Tuesday. Dress Manufacturer Smallish, dark-haired Lence is the wealthy New York dress manufacturer, bowling alley tycoon and independent fight promoter who staged the Patterson - Hurricane Jackson title fight at the Polo Grounds July 29, 1957. Previously, dur ing Patterson's early profes sional days, Lence had given Floyd fights at Brooklyn's Eastern Parkway Arena, where he promoted Monday night TV bouts. During D'Amato's bitter crusade against the Interna tional Boxing club since Pat terson became champion, Lence has been D'Amato's publicly designated "eastern promoter." But now pilot Cus is in censed at the result of Emil's alleged actions and statements during the recent 11 weeks of negotiations to rent the Gar den and stage a title fight there, completely independent of the IBC. Next in the balloting came Mickey Mantle of the Yan kees with three votes followed by Cleveland's Rocky Cola cito with two and Cal McLish, Vic Power, Sherman Lollar and Ted Williams with one each. . For Turley, the award was the climax of a season in which he finally blossomed from a promising but erratic thrower into a full-fledged big star pitcher. Districting The group, meeting here yesterday, voted to recom mend to a special OSAA com mittee studying the proposal, that a thorough study be made on the state level by OSAA state officials on the redistricting matter. They oppose change in the present set-up unless and until a "long, hard look" is taken. ; Medford School ' Superin tendent Leonard Mayfield was instructed to take that recommendation to a meeting of the special committee this morning at Eugene. Schools of the Willamette valley have asked that they all be placed in one district. They are North and South Salem, Albany, Corvallis, Sweet Home and Lebanon, now in District 8, and North and South Eugene and Spring field, now in District 5. The plan, they maintain, will solve travel and scheduling duties and restore old rival ries. The proposal has repercus sions in three other A-l dis tricts. Marshfield and Rose burg, now in District 5, would be placed in District 6 with Grants Pass, Medford and Ashland while new Dis trict 5 would be made up of Crater and Ashland, now in District 6, North Bend and Cottage Grove, now in Dis trict 5 and Willamette, Co quille and Douglas, A-2 schools due for A-l status. Bend, Redmond and Prine ville . would be moved from District 8 to District 7. Main objection to the plan lies in the prohibitive ' cost of travel for district play in all sports. It is contended that for smaller schools to finance such travel would be practic ally impossible. Even Marsh field, one of the larger schools, views the financial handicap with alarm. . School officials here yester day took the position that they can appreciate the prob lem of the Willamette valley schools but that it is not rea sonable to satisfy one group at the expense' of others. They maintined that the pro posal would cause far more harm than benefit, that it would be no gain at all and would actually be detriment al to the state's athletic pro gram.
