October 15, 1938 Oregon Clubs Picked In Grid Mix Ratings New York-dTD-Army, the nation's top ranked college football team, is rated a 27 point favorite over Virginia next Saturday while Auburn, the No. 2 team, is a seven point pick over Georgia Tech. Wisconsin, rated No. 3 na tionally and tops in the Mid west, is a seven-point choice over Iowa in the Midwest's regionally televised game, Auburn will be seeking to run the nation's longest major college winning streak to 18 games Ohio State, rated fourth, is a 20-point favorite over Indi ana, fifth - ranked Michigan State is rated six over Pur due in a battle of Big 10 pow erhouses. Seventh ranked Brown Has Wide Edge In Rushing Philadelphia - (UPD - Sopho more Jimmy Brown of the Cleveland Browns, a thunder bolt running through, over and around the opposition, was a country mile ahead to day in the National Football league race for leading rusher. The former Syracuse All- America, averaging a phenom enal 160-yard-plus per game and 6.4 per carry, had a net of 482 yards for the first three games of the young season. A year ago at this time, Brown had a 156-yard total. The battering Brown also led in scoring with eight touchdowns, all by rushing, and with his early start was heading for two NFL marks held by former Philadelphia Eagle Steven Van Buren. At Brown's present pace, he could better Van Buren's sea son record of yards gained 1,146 and the mighty Steve's league touchdown record of 18 in one season. Van Buren's all-time total yardage record fell this season to Joe (The Jet) Perry of San Francisco. Wilson Trails Brown Trailing Brown were Tom Wilson of Los Angeles with 280 yards, followed by Bob Mitchell of Cleveland with 262, Jon Arnet of Los Angeles with 253, and Willie Galimore of the Chicago Bears with 215. Eddie Le Baron of Washing ton, the little guy with the big savvy, was in front of the passers after three games with an average gain of 9.68 yards for every pass thrown. The mighty mite completed 25 of 44 for a 426 yard total, two touchdowns, and a 56.8 per centage. Mack Reynolds, freshman with the Chicago Cardinals, was second behind Le Baron with a 9.54 average, followed by Billy Wade of Los Angeles 8.55, Milt Plum of Cleveland 8.52 and Tobin Rote of De troit 7.27. The best individual passing game of the young year fell to Bart Starr of the Green Bay Packers, who completed 26 for 320 yards and one touchdown against Baltimore last week end. Ray Berry of Baltimore, with 19 completions for 266 yards and three touchdowns, led the pass receivers, with R. C. Owens of San Francisco second with 16. British Jet Planes Hampered by Strike London -JLTD- The British Overseas Airways Corp. call ed urgent talks today with union leaders in an effort to end a wildcat strike that has crippled the airlines and threatens its head start in the Transatlantic jet race. About 4.000 maintenance workers walked off their jobs Tuesday in an overtime dispute. The strike grounded all BOAC planes both at home and abroad. The National Joint Council for Civil Air Transport, a management-union group that acts as the negotiating body for the entire industry, was to meet to discuss the walk out. Union officials on the council have voiced opposi tion to the walkout, which was called without authoriza tion. An airlines spokesman said the strike threatened to pre vent BOAC from beating Pan American World Airways to the first daily Transatlantic jet service. Bandleader Sued For Back Alimony Los Angeles (UPD B a n d- leader Ray Anthony has been sued for $5,625 in back ali mony payments by his ex wife, singer Belle Keating. The complaint, filed Tues day by Attorney D. V. Hanne ken, stated that Anthony, es tranged husband of actress Mamie Van tDoren, was 25 weeks behind in payments of $250 a week, a sum allegedly agreed to in their 1955 divorce. Texas is 14 over Arkansas, ninth-ranked Louisiana State is 13 over Kentucky, and lOth-ranked Notre Dame is 13 over Duke. Penn Choice) Penn State is favored by 13 over Boston university in the East's regionally - televised game. Red Raiders Concentrate On Passing 'Ashland - Coach Al Akins concentrated his Southern Oregon College Red Raider gridsters on passing for the first two practice sessions of this week's preparation for the game with Oregon Tech next Saturday afternoon at Klamath Falls. The men of SOC will meet the Owls of OTI in the Tech man's homecoming game set for 2 p.m. The winner could go on to the 1958 Oregon Collegiate conference toga. Also at stake is the old traditional fight for possession of the Owl and Tomahawk. The Owl is encased in glass and is stuffed in a lifelike manner while the Tomahawk was received as a gift last year by SOC. The Tomahawk is also encased in glass and set upon a red cushion. Go To Winner These two objects of tradi tion will go to the winner of the fracas. At the present time they are in the hands of the Red Raiders as a result of the final basketball game last winter. In the event of a tie, the trophies would remain in Southern Oregon's possession. Back on the practice scene Jack Brown and Lance Locke have been doing the passing with little running being evi dent as it was in last week s practices. Principal targets have been Jim McAbee and Larry Yar nell in addition to Larry Mau rer and Rick Herman. Mc Abee is the leading receiver on the squad with 15 recep tions good for 248 yards which places him near the top in the NAIA totals. Oregon Tech is ruled the fa vorite by virtue of past per formances but as in the past one does not go too much on past history except to the ex tent that saying anything can happen between these two teams, and generally does, when they clash, regardless of time or place. Rush Total Increased By Maurer Ashland Larry Maurer forged further ahead in the race for the rushing crown of the Southern Oregon college gridmen when he picked up 96 yards against Portland State last weekend. Maurer now leads the totals with 219 yards or an average of 4.3 yards per carry. Closest to him is Eldon Francis with a net total of 96 yards and a 3.09' average per try. Jack Brown continues to lead the passing and total of fense department with 42 completions on 72 attempts for a total of 663 yards and four touchdowns. In complet ing 25 aerials against Lewis and Clark two weeks ago Brown set a new record in the N.A.I.A. topping the old mark of 21. McAbee Leads Ends Jim McAbee leads the ends in pass receiving with 15 snage for 248 yards followed closely by Maurer with 12 re ceptions for 138 yards. Mc Abee, too. has been on the scoring end of two touchdown passes along with Larry Yar nell who has caught nine for 107 yards. The scoring lead is held by Maurer with 24 tallies with McAbee having 12. For the four games to date nine Raid ers have had a hand in the scoring roles for "the men of SOC. Tony Brauner continues to do the punting for the Red Raiders with a 34.75 average on 12 boots with one being blocked. Lence Seeking Garden Tussle For Heavy Toga New York (UPD Promoter Emil Lence said today he will try to stage a heavyweight title fight at Madison Square Garden in January or Febru ary, despite Tuesday night's official announcement that there will be no such bout at the punch emporium this win ter. Lence stressed there had been no split between himself and Cus D'Amato, manager of champion Floyd Patterson; "Negotiations for Patterson to defend at the Garden on Dec. 5 or Dec. 12 were termi nated yesterday by D'Amato," the promoter admitted. ' "But that was because D'Amato re fused to let Patterson fight on home television, Dec. 5, and because there wasn't time to .arrange for nation-wide theatre-TV facilities by Dec. 12." ' Chairman Julius Helf and of the New York State Athletic Commission announced Tues day night, "there will not be a heavyweight championship contest at Madison Square Garden this winter as I had hoped there would be." Sam Williams Lineman Star East Lansing, Mich. -UPD-An end who didn't catch a single pass Saturday is the United Press International Midwest lineman of the week. JBig Sammy Williams did not even get his hands on the ball as he sparked Mich igan State to a 22-8 victory ovep Pitt. But the ball is his to keep now. The 6-foot, 5-inch Ail-American candidate got the ball and high tribue from Coach game for his brilliant block ing and tackling. Daugherty called Williams "the finest all-around end I have seen in all my years at Michigan State. Williams spearheaded a Spartan defense that limited the Panthers to only 75 yards on the ground. HUSKY BACKS SHINE Seattle - (UPD - Halfbacks George Fleming and Luther Carr, on whom the Washing ton Huskies are depending for the bulk of their offensive power, looked good in drills Tuesday. The California senior ran his total offense yardage to 450, three yards more than Washington State's Bob New man. Don Long of UCLA was third with 353 yards. Kapp led in rushing with 232 yards to 224 for Willie West of Oregon and 223 for Rex Johnston of Southern California. In passing, New man's total of 487 yards, was achieved on 47 completions out of 72 attempts for a .652 percentage mark. Second to Newman was Dick Norman of Stanford, 30 passes completed while Long of UCLA was third with 28 completions. Dick Wallen of UCLA, who caught 10 passes in his team's game with Florida, took over the pass receiving lead with 14 catches. Bob Dehlinger of Idaho was tied for second and Stanford's Chris Burford at 13. Long and Dainard Paulson of Oregon State were tied in punting with a 42.3 yard aver age while Bill Kilmer of UCLA was third with 40.7. John Horrillo of Oregon State led in punt returns with 110 yards and Hank Olguin of California led in kickoff returns with 136 yards. Bill Patton of California led in scoring with 36 points. In team statistics Oregon defense. The Webfoots aver aged 357 yards per game in total offense despite yielding the rushing lead to California and the passing to Washington State. California moved the ball 250.2 yards a game rushing while the Cougars averaged 192 yards a game through the air. Defensively Oregon yielded but 162.6 yards a game, giv ing up 116.5 yards rushing and 46 yards passing. The sport of curling was introduced to Canada 200 years ago by Scottish troops stationed in Quebec, "shuffle board on ice" is now said to be increasingly popular in this country. UCLA led in team puntin with an average of 41.2 yards per kick. Idaho was first in interceptions with seven. Cali fornia led in punt returns with an average of 11.4 yards and Washington averaged 24.7 yards on kickoff returns. Bowl Offer Consideration Suggested for UO's Ducks Portland-ttJPD-The University of Oregon should consider the possibility of accepting a bid to a New Year's day football game other than the Rose Bowl this season if it contin ues its present pace, Sports Editor George Pasero of the Oregon Journal suggested to day. Oregon played in the Rose Bowl on Jan. 1 of this year and under the pact between the dying Pacific Coast Con ference and the Big Ten is not eligible to go back on Jan. 1,' 1959. At present Oregon is rated the top team on the West Coast. ". . . We see no reason Ore gon can't go to a bowl, pro viding, of course, the Ducks go through the season with a 9-1 or .8-2 record, and certain ly not worse than 7-3," Pa sero said. He said the Orange, Cotton and Sugar bowls were "wide open" for such a team as Ore gon. "And since the PCC winds up its business July 1 of next year, why shouldn't Russian Program To 'Amaze' World Moscow -(UPD- The Soviet Union's new seven-year eco nomic program to be announ ced at the forthcoming Com munist Party congress is "in credible" and will amaze the whole world, Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev said on Tuesday night. Khrushchev, in a speech at Stavropol, said the "21st con gress of the Communist party of the Soviet Union will con front us with grandiose prob lems." "The figures which charac terize the development of our economy for the next seven years appear simply incredi ble," he said. "When these figures become known, the whole world will be amazed at the prospects of the devel opment of the socialist economy." The Soviet premier also praised the successes already achieved by the Russian economy. the Webfoots go to another bowl? They have no moral obligation to the "rebels any way." By "rebels" Pasero said he referred to UCLA, South ern California, Washington and California. They an nounced plans to pull, out of the PCC, leading to its break up. In 1948 Oregon went to the Cotton Bowl after California was voted into the Rose Bowl. It voted other PCC members a share of the Cotton Bowl proceeds. Pasero suggested that Oregon might "cut in the stand pat clubs of the old PCC Washington State, Ore gon State, Idaho and Stanford for a share of the spoils" in any game it' might play next Jan. 1. .
