10 MAIL TRIBUNE, MedforJ, Oregon, Tuesday, October 14, 1938 Eisenhower Says Nation Has Choice of Sane and Sound, or Radical Government Washington -CPU President Eisenhower said today the na tion faces a choice in the Kov. 4 elections between "sane, sound government" under the Republicans and "radical gov ernment" under the Demo crats. . The President told some 600 Republican campaign workers who gave him a breakfast on his 68th birthday that the GOP has no reason to be pes simistic about the outcome of the voting. "What is there except hos tile propaganda to make us discouraged?" he asked. He urged a chain letter ' writing drive and a campaign of telephone calls to -get out the vote for the November balloting. Then, "putting his own advice into practice, he picked up a telephone from his seat at the head table In a local hotel's banquet room and telephoned Mrs. James ,W. Khalaf Jr., a dentist's wife at Maplewood, N.J. The President said he had already begun to write letters to drum up support for Re publican candidates. ; lie described his experi ence with the defense reor ganization bill in Congress :this year as a lesson in what could be done. .Blames Congress for Deficit ' He said there were times Jwhen it had appeared that the Reorganization plan would be killed before he wrote about ;430 personal letters to busi ness and professional men to .'enlist their help. The response .'was s great, he said, that the -measure was passed in satis factory form. Eisenhower, said the Repub licans had come to washing :ton in 1952 to remove eco nomic controls, restore au- 'thority to states and indi viduals, and to begin balanc ing the federal budget. He said the administration had made "remarkable prog ress" toward "fiscal responsi bility" but that the recession, defense requirements "and spending program approved by Congress in excess of his recommendations had created another large deficit. While no just and' perma nent peace has been achieved by his administration, the More Atomic Test Shots Scheduled Las Vegas, Nev. - (WD - The Atomic Energy Commission scheduled two test atomic shots for Wednesday and an other for Thursday in an at tempt to complete its project ed 10-shot series before the proposed 1 nuclear deadline, Oct. 31. The scheduled shots will bring the total to eight. The fifth and most power ful shot of the series was deto nated Monday. It exploded with a force of 10,000 tons of TNT and its flash could be seen as far as 500 miles away. The AEC is seeking to com plete the series before a pro posed nuclear test ban be tween the U.S. and Russia goes into effect Oct. 31. PAINTER GETS EVEN . VOTE for HUDSON Vv : J r ' LOOK TO THE o FUTURE o - Elect - GORDON HUDSON DEMOCRAT STATE SENATOR for ACTIVE, AGGRESSIVE REPRESENTATION Pd. Pol. Adv. Hudson for Sena tor Committee. Joan I. Redden, 2246 Aloha St., Secretary. President said, "there is no shooting." 'Massive Retaliation' Republicans, mean while launched" ' massive retalia tion" against Democrats cn the foreign policy front, while Democrats indicated they would continue to hammer at bread and butter domestic issues. What provoked the GOP to swing to foreign policy was a weekend statement from the Democratic Advisory Council. It charged the Eisen hower administration with "leaderless vacillation" and urged that the Far Eastern crisis be laid before the Unit ed Nations. Democratic leaders gener ally felt that domestic pocket book issues, like jobs, housing and the cost of living, should get overriding attention. But they viewed the council's statement as a guide for Dem ocratic candidates who, want ed to talk foreign policy. Communist China's exten sion of its ceasefire order af fecting the offshore- island of Quemoy, meanwhile, gave Re publicans a built-in reply to claim administration success in keeping the peace. Says Reds Deterred In a statement Monday night, Nixon said millions of people and a number of coun tries had fallen behind the Iron Curtain and the Korean war had erupted while the Democrats were in power. There were no gains lor Com munism and the war had end ed under the Eisenhower ad ministration, he said. Without direct reference to the Nixon statement. Demo cratic Chairman Paul M. Butler said Nixon and other GOP leaders were using "warmed over scare words" to brand Democrats as appeas ers in the field of foreign policy. Butler also used those words to brush off the Repub lican leadership statement last week asserting that election of another Democratic-controlled Congress would be a step toward higher taxes and socialism. . Bombing of School SaFd Depraved Act Los Angeles - fUPD - Tenne see's Gov. Frank E. Clement Monday called the bombing of a Clinton, Tenn., high school a "depraved and des picable act." "We are doing everything we can to send somebody to the penitentiary" for the bombing, Clement said. The bombing, which caused an estimated $300,000 damage to the school, was believed caused by .someone opposed to integration of Negroes with white students. i Clement, who appeared here to give an address dur ing a sale of Israel bonds, was asked what his personal stand on the integration issue was. "I led a happy childhood in segrated schools," he said, "but when I became governor I took an oath to uphold the law." uvjuvi SPECDAL PURCHASE! Mike Mansfield (D.-Mont.) said to day a conference between Secretary of .State John Fos ter Dulles andV,Communist Chinese Premier Chou En-lai should be considered as a "last resort" tactic to bring peace to the Far East.- The assistant Senate Demo cratic leader said however that the facilities of the Unit ed Nations-including "the ne gotiating abilities of Secre tary General Dag Hammar-,skjold"-should be used first if the current U.S.-Red Chi nese diplomatic talks in War saw, Poland, failed to solve the Quemoy-Matsu crisis. Mansfield is a member of the Senate Foreign Relations committee and a respected Democratic spokesman on for eign ' policy. He is also Cur rently serving as a member of the U.S. delegation to the U.N. General Assembly. . He made the statements in an interview in which he voiced a new plea for biparti sanship on foreign policy. He said he was concerned that discussions . of foreign policy matters have been "veering in the direction" of partisan politics, and urged that this be avoided because "the stakes are too high and the possibilities too dangerous."
