Dial SP2-6141' Crocodile Tears re Real McCoy, Scientists By DELOS SMITH UPI Science Editor New York - (LTD - Crocodile tears are the real McCoy. Cro codiles do weep, often and witnout e m- b a r rassment. Also sea tur , ties. But why? Science at long last, after decades of not I knowing (and i of not much caring) now can tell you veio miLo t n e a n- swers are provided by Dr. Knut Schmidt - Nielsen of Duke University, Durham, r. C, and Ragnar Fange of Lund University, Lund, Swe den. They have just completed the first known scientific in vestigation of the strange phenomenon which links cro codiles and turtles to people since people also are copious weepers. Schmidt-Nielsen is one of the world's leading author ities on the kidneys of ani mals other than man. For in stance, his studies showed that the special and quite ex treme efficiency of a camel's kidneys permits that animal to go so long between drinks of water. Much Like Land Animals . Riverside Claim lizards-began, therefore, from their kidneys. They all have bodily workings pretty much like those of land animals, an amazing thing when you keep in mind they drink salt water and eat salty, foods. Even more amazingly, then kidneys are woefully incap able of extracting all that salt intake from their bodily fluids and getting rid of it. Looking at them from the standpoint of kidneys alone, they shouldn't be able to live. That makes it 'rather clear they must have some other means of dealing with salt. Schmidt-Nielsen and Fange found that they have glands in their heads which extract the salt. In crocodiles and turtles, these glands are con nected by ducts to the eyes; in other sea reptiles the ducts empty into the nose. So the tears of crocodiles and turtles are salty all right, but the animals are only getting rid of surplus salt. Findings End Legends Their findings dispose of legends which many unscien tific minds accept as gospel. One is the crocodile is sarcas tic. While chomping up a vic tim in his powerful jaws, he sheds tears of mock sympathy. Hence "crocodile tears" mean phony sympathy. . Weeping female sea turtles have been described many times. They come up out of the sea onto tropical beaches to lay eggs in the sand. Tears have been observed running from their eyes in rivulets. From that, it has been rea soned that egg-laying is pain ful for turtles. The scientists pointed out that that theory has always been rejected by naturalists. Alcafraz Prison Escapee's Body Found in Water San Francisco - (OPD - T h e body of convict Aaron Burgett was recovered from the water near Alcatraz Island Sunday, just 13 days after the Missouri bandit made his bid to escape "The Rock." . .. His badly decomposed body still was clad in prison clothes, and officials at Alcatraz said one clear thumb print verified the identity. . . , Burgett's escape effort was not a desperate try, but ap parently a well-planned bid for freedom. Plywood on Feet .. . . - Slabs of plywood had been bound to his feet with wire as substitutes for swim fins to help conquer the turbulent one and a quarter miles of bay between Alcatraz and San Francisco. ; , Burgett had extra socks un der his heavy brown boots, and his trcuser legs, were bound . at the ankles , with black plastic tape - presum ably to prevent them from ballooning during the long swim. The convict wore long, win ter underwear over his prison trousers as further protection from the chilly water, and he still carried the knife used to overpower Guard Harold Miller during the escape ef fort Sept. 29. - Another prisoner, Clyde Johnson, 40, a Memphis, Term., bank robber, joined Burgett in the bid for free dom. But Johnson was cap tured on the island the follow ing day. Closes Out Old Cases r , The finding . of Burgett's body was grim proof of War den Paul Madigan's conten tion that "they just -can't escape" from Alcatraz. ., "Actually," he said, "this probably is fortunate because it kind of closes out the old Roe and Cole case." Madigan referred to con victs Ralph Roe and Theodore Cole,, who sawed through workshop bars and leaped into the bay Dec. 16, 1937. They were never captured and their bodies were never found. "I am now more certain than ever that Roe and Cole drowned just as Burgett has," the warden said. "They just can't escape from here." . EXPLOSIVE SITUATION -. Lille, France-OD-A police man with a sharp tye for a too ample bosom arrested Mrs. Isabelle Plampain on suspicion Sunday. A police woman found Mrs. Plam pain's brassiere , filled out with a dozen dynamite deto nators. The 57-year-old wom an, charged with smuggling, said she was making delivery from Belgium for a friend of her husband. : Scientists at Walter Reed Army Hospital have found perforated duodenal lucers in monkeys subjected to stress. Pianist Found Dead in Home Hollywood (CPU The 28 y ear-old wife of jazz saxo phonist Herb Geller was found dead on the floor be side her daughter's over turned crib Saturday. The body of Lorraine Gel ler, a pianist, was discovered by Mr. apd Mrs. Joseph Maini when they heard the child, Lisa, 1, crying and then found Mrs. Geller's body lying by the overturned crib. The Mai nis had been taking care of the child. They said the victim re turned from an engagement complaining of pains in her chest and indigestion, but the cause of death was not imme diately known.
