Pope Pius XII by Alden Hatch and Seamus Walshe, pub lished by Hawthorn Books in 1956, is a truly popular biog raphy and an intimate por trait of a great man. The authors did most of the re search for their book from original Vatican sources and with the cooperation of many Holy See officials. Diplomatic Maneuvers During World War II, the Vatican became the center for a constant succession of diplomatic maneuvers. This phase of the story of Pius Xn is related by Contantine, Prince of Bavaria in his book, "The Pope; a Portrait from Life." The author, of course, is a man born and bred to the world of diplomacy and has unique inside information at his disposal. In his portrait, Pius XII is shown as a great and noble Pontiff and also as a diplomat of wide cosmopoli tan experience. Another fine presentation of the subject is Nazareno Padellaro's "Portrait of Pius XII." In this informative story a fellow Roman covers the life of the late Holy Father from childhood days to 1955. The narrative . includes the difficult war and post - war period, especially the strug gle against world communism, Written' for young readers, "Man Who Was Chosen," by Elise Lavelle, begins the story with Eugenio Pacelli's early home life, goes on to tell of his school days in Rome, of the great moments of his or dination and his elevations to higher offices, and finally of his dramatic election to the Papacy, and his importance as a world figure today. Warmth, Stature The author has been able t show in this biography the warmth and stature of the personality of Eugenio Pa celli, so often obscured by the very nature of his exalted office. Her account is factual in approach and careful to strike the right balance be tween vital statistics and hu man interest. "Thf Pope Speaks," edited by Michael Chinigo, brings together the most important pronouncements of the Holy Father on the many urgent issues confronting contem porary man, in a carefully and lucidly organized structure. In this volume the Pope speaks from an incredible ac quaintance with a wide range of problems, and with a spiri tual and moral as well as cul tural message. Any of the books mentioned may be borrowed through re quest from any of the agen cies of the Jackson County library. Huggins Subject of American Oil Ad M. M.
