TOPS ON THE RECORD SHELVES: "Originator,"
Columbia's 10th anniversary salute to LP, should be a
collector's item in years to come. Stereo fans will find
London's original edition of the complete Stravinsky
"Petrushka" ballet, as played by L'Orchestre de la Suisse
- Romande, a truly amazing performance. And for a pair of
vocal delights, dig "The Best of Ella Fitzgerald," a double
disk release by Decca, and "Paris After Hours," with
Vicky Autier, on Capitol.
MUSIC FOR FAMILY LISTENING: Let's roll back
the rugs and dance. We'll tee off with "The New James,"
Capitol's showcase for the exciting Harry James and his
swinging group. Now follow with RCA's "The Marvelous
Miller Medleys" by the Glenn Miller orchestra. For a
new sound, spin "Hits I Missed" by Ted Heath on London.
It's in stereo. Decca has two strong entries in this class,
"Claude on a Cloud," with Claude Thornhill and his big
sound, plus "Twelve Easy Lessons in Love" with Carmen
Ca valla ro toting the ball.
TUNING IN THE TEENS: There are some real gassers
on hand for the jeaners this month. RCA's "Como's
Golden Records" has some of the best tunes Perry ever
put on shellac. Dot's Pat Boone continues his string of
hits with "Star Dust," and, via the same label, "Billy
Vaughn Plays the Million Sellers" is sure to please your
listening circle. "A Guy in Love" will bring many fans
back into Guy Mitchell's camp via Columbia.
COVERING THE . CLASSICS: Classicists can have a
wonderful time browsing through the many excellent new
releases, in both monaural and stereo, now available. A
pair you may want to review are "The Orchestra Sings,"
with Carmen Dragon conducting the Capitol Symphony,
and the premiere American recording of Shostakovich's
"Symphony No. 11," as played by the Houston Symphony
under the baton of Leopold Stokowski, both on Capitol.
JAZZOMANIA: Andre Previn and his pals, Shelly Marine
and Red Mitchell, have another blockbuster in their ver
sion of the music from "Gigi," a big one for Contemporary.
For a vocal program, spin Mercury's "After Hours at
the London House," an on-the-scene slicing by Sarah
Vaughan. Capitol has a big bargain in "Popular Jazz Gold
Album," spotlighting some of its top jazz names.
STEREO-SHOPPING: In addition to the stereo disks
reviewed above, here are a few more "new-sound" re
leases to consider for your library and don't forget, you
can play these on a monaural system, too. London offers
incidental music from Mendelssohn's "A Midsummer
Night's Dream," by the London Symphony; the Paris
Conservatoire Orchestra playing Chopin's "Les Sylphides"
and Delibes' "La Source"; and Berlioz' "Symphonie Fan
tastique," with the Paris Conservatoire Orchestra.
