That was the burning ques tion in Oregon high school football circles today after the defending state champions plastered a 67-0 defeat on Grant in Portland Friday night. Jeff, ranked No. 1 in the coaches' poll, rolled up a to tal of 711 yards rushing and passing. . There also was a mild upset in Portland as Cleveland, led by Norm Patera's two touch downs, came from behind to upset previously unbeaten Madison 19-13. Madison was ranked fifth in the state this week. CP Ties Marsbfiald Second - ranked Medford kept its slate clean with a 26-0 win over Crater. But Marsh field, ranked third, stubbed its toe again and was held to a 6-6 tie by 14th-ranked Grants Pass. -The Pirates lost to Medford a week ago. Roseburg solidified its rank ing in the top 10 by downing Springfield 20-13. Roseburg was seventh this week. No. 8 North Salem won as expected over 12th -ranked Corvallis, 20-7; ninth-ranked West Linn walloped St. Helens 40-14 and 1 0th - ranked Baker came through over The Dalles, 26-12. District Manager of Insurance Firm Named Dave Cutting, Grants Pass representative of the North ern Life Insurance company, has assumed the district man agership in Medford, replac ing Jack Burpee. The change became effective Oct. 1. Cutting, who has been in Grants Pass the past 12 years, plans to move to Medford soon with his wife, Dottie, and children, Steve, Tommie and Jeff. , Tittle got the call over young John Brodie, who had started the game against Los Angeles Rams a week ago the game in which the Forty Niners took a 33-3 shellacking. The Bears, who also lost last week, have been installed as Vh point favorites to win. Return of Billy Wilson at end has improved the chances for the San Francisco club, which took one of its worts beatings in history in t h a t Ram tilt. "If Tittle can keep the bally moving, he'll be in all the way," says Coach Frankie Al bert. "'"But if he doesn't, it is probable that Brodie will see action, too." Tittle claims that he can make the team move much easier when Wilson, leading pass catcher in the league the last two years, is in there as a target. With Tittle in the backfield will be Joe Perry at fullback and Hugh McElhenny and R. C. Owens at halves. The problem for San Fran cisco will be to stop the crop of fleet backs that Coach George Hallas will turn loose. These include Willie Gaii more, Rick Casares, J. C. Caroline and Johnny Morris, the latter a rookie from Santa Barbara, who was a college track star. A capacity crowd of 41,000 is expected to see the battle. Air Force Gets Victory Denver-(UPD - Rich Mayo, quarterbacking the second unit, guided the Air Force Academy to a 36-6 triumph over Colorado State universi ty Saturday with a brilliant display of ball control. A crowd of 17,500 watched the Cadets, who last week shocked Iowa with a 13-13 tie, overpower Saturdays previously undefeated oppon ent in the second half. The 19-year-old Mayo, of Eureka, Calif., scored once and passed for another touch down, and was running the team when the Academy scored its first three touchdowns. Bob Boyd Evens With Beecham Chicago - (CPD-Middleweight Bobby Boyd had an even score with Jimmy Beecham today, but that's about all he could claim from a unanimous 10 round decision over the Miami Beach fighter. Boyd lost to Beecham in Mi ami Aug. 27 in his only fight prior to Friday night's battle in a television venture which drew only 683 fans. "I won because I outthought him," Boyd said. Beecham blamed his defeat on overcon-fidence. Wildcats Beat Down Gophers Minneapolis (LTD North western's fantastic sophomore, Dick Thornton, scored a touchdown with 58 seconds to play to give the fighting wildcats .a 7-3 victory over Minnesota in the big ten open er for both teams Saturday. , The triple threat quarter back punched over from the 2 for the winning touchdown and kicked the. extra point to make it an all-Thornton ball' game. A crowd of 56,061, includ ing former President- Harry S. Truman, watched Thorn ton pass and run for nearly 150 yards. - The Northwestern win end ed one of Minnesota's best line performances in the five-year tenure of Coach Murray War math. The veteran Gopher linemen contained the Wild cats' fearea speed for more than 59 minutes only to have Thornton pull out the victory. Navy Breaks Michigan Win Streak Ann Arbor, Mich. -fl!PD-Joe Tranchini fired a 36-yard touchdown pass to halfback Dick Zembrzuski with 5:05 to play Saturday to give unbeat en Navy a stunning 20-14 up set victory over previously un beaten Michigan. The middies who had halt ed Michigan three times with in their 10-yard line and five times within the 20, came to life offensively at the third period after the Wolverines had taken a 14-6 lead. Tranchini directed an 85 yard drive for the winning touchdown, hitting Zembrz uski at the five. No Michigan defender was within 15 yards of him as he went in for the touchdown. Zembruski plung ed over right tackle for the extra points to seal Navy's third win in as many starts. All-Stars Vie At. New York New York - (GPD - National league baseball returns brief ly to New York today when Willie Mays' all-stars meet an American league all-star team managed by Mickey Mantle at Yankee Stadium. Lefty Billy Pierce of the White Sox and Bob Friend, the Pirates, 22-game winner, will be respective starting pitchers. A crowd of about 26,000 is expected to "watch the first baseball all-star game of any kind in the stadium for the past 16 years. Badgers Get 31-6 Victory Madispn.Wis. -flJPD- Wiscon sin kept its offensive under wraps and bulled its way to an impressive 31-6 over pre viously unscored upon Pur due Saturday, boosting the Badgers', stock in the big ten title rave. Quarterback Dale Hack bart, who scored twice, got the Badgers rolling in the sec ond period with tow touch down drives that broke a 6-6 deadlock and decided the game. Hackbart rolled out around end for gains of 11, 14 and 19 yards on a 66-yard drive and finally plunged over from the one. ' An illegal substitution pen alty for 15 yards gave Wis consin a first down on Pur due's 23 shortly before the half and the Badgers rolled to another score. Court of Military Appeals has affirmed the death sentence of Sgt. Isaac J. Hurt, convicted of the rape-murder of a five year old Okinawan girl in 1955. Hurt, 31, at the time of the crime, was convicted by an Army' court martial at Ft. Buckner on Okinawa. The child's body was found in an abandoned auarrv bordering the China Sea on Sept. 4, 1955.
