Ohio Voters Believed About To Produce Another Union Jolt By LYLE C. WILSON UPI Correspondent Washington - ITD - Richard L. Maher, the astute political expert of the Cleveland Press, be lieves Ohio voters are about to come up with an other union labor shocker like their whopping 1950 reelec tion of Sen. Robert A. Lyla C. H'Usoo Xaft The shocker this time would be approval of a con stitutional amendment for bidding the union shop in Ohio. This is a right-to-work proposal which organized labor is trying mightily to kill. Taft's reelction in 1950 by a margin of 400,000 votes made the senator Mr. Re publican to one and all and almost propelled him into the White House. The Republican politician who stands to bene fit the most if Ohio goes for right-to-work next month is Ohio's 42-year-old governor C. 'William O'Neill, a Phi Beta Kappa and a Baptist. Opinion of Some O'Neill got his reelection campaign off the ground some weeks ago with a public en dorsement of right-to-work. The blast-off was so success ful that it enabled O'Neill to gain and, so far, to hold the campaign offensive. Arthur Capper (R-Kan.), are credited with the ability to keep both ears to the ground. Telephone returns to O'Neill on his endorsement of righ-to-work have been im pressively favorable. So the young governor has made that his major cam paign issue. He tells the voters that right-to-work com bines an affirmative position on man's fundamental free dom of choice and on the anti-corruption issue as it relates to organized labor. There is evidence that the issue is popular and that O'Neill may overcome the Ohio political t r a d i t i on against reelecting Republi can governors. Beat Him Before O'Neill's Democratic op ponent is Michael V. DiSalle, one-time chief of the federal Office of Price Administra tion. Mike DiSalle was one of the most attractive and po litically adept of the many able men brought into Wash ington during the Roosevelt and Trum'an administrations. O'Neill licked DiSalle in 1956 for a two-year term. His vote bulge was narly 430,000. The contest now is for Ohio's first four-year term. There can be no fluke about it if O'Neill defeats Di Salle and if right-to-work carries. The unions are making a real fight to defeat the amend ment. Ohio seems to be a fairer test of right-to-work senti ment than is likely to be had this year in California where the Republican fighting front is a shambles and the princi pal candidates hostile each to the other. O'Neil crossed other top level Ohio Republi cans on the right-to-wOrk issue but, apparently, with out seriously fracturing party unity. Presidency in View An O'Neill-f or-p res ident movement calculated to at tract wide conservative sup port will be almost automatic if he is reelected and the right-to-work amendment is approved in Ohio. The spot light would be hard on him and his performance during the next two years as Re publicans maneuvered to ward their 1960 nominating convention. On the record so far, O'Neill must be given good marks as a politician. He should know the game after long service in the Ohio legislature. The party pros as well as the unhappy party conservatives might be at tracted to O'Neill.. An interesting footnote to the Ohio campaign is the thought that Negroes may vote for right-to-work. There has been union discrimination against them in Ohio. ajHUN ALL-TRANSISTOR PERSONAL RADIO Designed for Rechargeable Battery Hi raaiicbwa Spr. AH-tronsitor personal radio. Later, Truman Predicts Farm Prices To Go Lower Again Cherokee, Iowa (UPD -Former President Truman, predicting "farm prices are going to go down again," said last Thursday night that Re publican policies have cost farmers $20 billion since 1952. The $20 billion figure, Tru man tod a Democratic rally, "represents the difference be tween what farmers actually received and what they would have i received had prices been maintained at 1952 levels." Truman, now on a barn storming tour to aid the Democratic party's cause in the November elections, said that this year's bumper crops mean a "tremendous addition to the surplus." Prices To Go Down "Farm prices are going to go down again" .under Agri culture Secretary Ezra Taft Benson's low support policies, he said. "Of course," Truman said, "this may not happen be tween now and Nov. 4. The Republicans may be too smart for that. "But," he said, "I want to give you farmers a little warning. You had better sell your crops before the elec tion, because afterwards you are going to be in the same boat you have been in the last five years. "Benson can turn it off just like he can turn it on. Farm prices are made in Washing ton. Don't torget it, Truman said.
