Pears Rale Fourth
For Farm Income
Salem - Cattle and wheat
continued as Oregon's first
and second farm income pro
ducers in 1957, with dairying
and pears in third and fourth
place, according to Robert J.
Stewart, state director of ag
riculture. This information is con
tained in the first USDA re
port giving a detailed break
down of Oregon's farm gate
receipts last year. The new
figures give a revised look at
the total 1957 farm income,
now placed at 8397,372,000.
This is lower than the pre
liminary ' figures released
earlier this year.
Farmer's cash receipts on
the four top commodities in
1957 were: cattle and calves,
$63.4 million; wheat, $49.6
million; dairying, $47 million
and pears, $20.7 million..
Steward points out these
are gross income figures, not
net income. He also says the
same report shows Oregon
gross income per farm gained
$98 in 1957 - from S8157 to
$8255. But net income de
clined $173 - from $2830 in
1956 to $2657 in 1957.

Shrimp Fishing
Closure Rescinded
Seattle - (LTD - An order
calling for a 4V2-month clos
ure of the" ocean shrimp fish
ery off the Washington coast
was rescinded today by State
Fisheries Director Milo
Moore.
The closure was to have be
come effective Nov. 1 for the
purpose of protecting the in
dustry during spawning time.
The order had the support of
most Washington shrimp fish
ermen. However, Moore said, the
Oregon Fish Commission de
clined to adopt a similar regu
lation, claiming lack of bio
logical data under the Oregon
law prohibited commission ac
tion at this time. Without the
concurrence of the Oregon
commission, Moore explained,
it would be useless to restrict
Washington shrimp fishermen
operating along the coast.
Man's Death Said
Self-inflicted
" Yreka-George L. Duff, o4,
Tustin, has been released by
Siskiyou County Sheriff A. B.
(Al) Cotter. He was held in
connection with the death of
Walter Odell Ramsey, 60, San
Diego county carpenter union
business agent.
Ramsey was found dead in
his car near Happy Camp
Sept. 22 with gunshot wounds
in his head.
Duff, according to Cotter,
was held because he hitch
hiked from the scene to

bus for southern California.
The men had been in the
Happy Camp area on a hunt
ing trip.
Final reports from a pathol
ogist and from the California
bureau of criminal investiga
tion and identification had es
tablished that Ramsey "died
of self-inflicted wounds."
The reports included finger
print evidence showing that
"only Ramsey had handled
the gun, a Luger pistol, at any
time," that two gunshot
wounds in Ramsey's head
were contact wounds, indicat
ing the gun had been pressed
against the victim's head;
and that a bullet through the
jaw believed originally to
have been fired downward
had coursed upward instead.
