4A MAIL TRIBUNE, Medford. Oregon, Tuesday, October 7, 1953 Why Fumble on SALES or NEEDS? Use a Classified Ad! Dial SP 2-6 1 4 1 Is That So? By OLGA BURNS When a cow swallows its cud, is anything wrong with it? The question, suggested by a letter from Mrs. Chet Marks, of Bililngs, Mont., touches on the matter of the so - called imaginary disease of cattle. Diseases that men imagine them as having. The cud is food the cow has already eaten and regurgitat ed from its first stomach. A cow chewing its cud is gen erally content, chewing plac idly until its next meal. And so if a cow is neither eating nor chewing its cud for any substantial length of time, it is reasonable to sup pose it is not content and quit possibly ill. And since loss of cud failure to chew it - is a symptom of many bovine diseases, it is then well to examine the animal for other symptoms that will pinpoint the difficulty. - In the past, however, loss of cud was regarded as a dis ease in itself if not the result of an accident. The general procedure then was to sup ply the cow with an artificial cud. One type consisted of a handful of a rough weed with clusters of whitish, button headed flowers botanically known as Gnaphalium. It Happy Homer's Buys $14,900.00 3 bedroom and family room. Potter, Representative proved so popular for cen turies it has had the common name of cudweed. Cur Mad Cow 111 Another imaginary disease was known as "hollow-horn," and the cure made a cow ill if he wasn't already. Fevers make a cow's horn warm to the touch, and circulatory ail ments make them cold. But some herdsmen, noting a warm horn, would bore into it with an auger to see if it was hollow. If it was - and cow's horns generally are if one bores in the right place -they poured in turpentine or some other fiery substance that would cause excruciating agony, as one can imagine since the hollows are exten sions of the frontal sinuses. Yet another imaginary ill ness went by the name of "wolf-in-the-tail." The tail of any animal is one of the most obvious things about the beast. Its condition often serves as a valuable in dication as to health. Some of our ancestors, how ever, noting a tail that was listless and without gloss, de cided on the drastic measure of cutting a slit in it, packing it with salt and binding it up. Obviously the tail would no longer be listless, regardless of how the cow felt otherwise. It lodged a res olute protest" with the State Department. Soviet Ambassador Mik hail Menshikov handed the protest to Deputy Undersec retary of State Robert Mur phy. , Menshikov said the play, "The Plot to Kill Stalin," was a "provocative action." "That was a filthy slander against the Soviet Union and the Soviet government," he said. "This kind of slanderous attack is incompatible with international standards and inadmissable in normal rela tions between two countries." The television program, which appeared Sept. 25, showed events leading up to the death of Stalin in March, 1953.
