They were starting out over a mountain trail to see someone who was very ill, and who needed the help from both a doctor and a clergymari. I recently read an article by the Rev. Granger E. West- berg, who is a professor at the Univer sity of Chica go. He holds the Chair of Religion and Health, and he works with the doc tors in the big Billings Dr. Alvares hospital. There he helps the interns to handle intelligent ly and sympathetically the problems of dealing with people who are seriously ill, and perhaps facing death. He has trained 12 student chap lains, who are now attached to the several hospital ser vices. As Westberg says, he - is hoping now that some day cnapiams will be seeing many of the patients in the earlier stages of their disease and not in the last ones. For example, a 45-year-old man who was about to be operated on for a bad ulcer of the stomach, said to his chaplain, You know, this trouble be gan five years ago when my son began to get into serious trouble with the police, and I was worried sick. Perhaps if then my doctor could have referred me to you for help in handling the situation, I wouldn't have gotten this ul cer. Tells of Experience As Professor Westberg says the idea of having chaplains in hospitals began with the very distressing experience of a remarkable man, the Rev Anton Boisen, a minister who one day years ago suddenly became mentally ill and man iacal. The book he wrote la ter, entitled "The Exploration of the Inner World" (Harp er s, N.Y.), should be requir ed reading for every minister and every psychiatrist in the country. In it he tells of the tremendous religious exper ience through which he pass ed when he was mentally up set. During his stay in a mental hospital, Boisen asked if he might see a chaplain, and learned that there wasn't one in the place. He then asked that some of the local min isters come in to help him, but these men in that day either dreaded to go near a mental hospital, or when they came, they were not helpful. They hadn't any training to help them in talking to a man who was, technically speaking insane. They did not know that most of the patients in a mental hospital are, for much of the time, as sensible and rational and logical as you or I. As a result, the min isters who came either preach ed at Boisen or prayed over him, and gave him no help. What he wanted was a chance to talk over with a minister his experiences, and to get help in answering the great question in his mind which was, were his tremedous vis ions the result of insanity, or did Christ really appear be fore him? 'Mayo Foundation Emeritus Professor ef Medicine, Mayo Foundation came to the conclusion that if a vivid religious experience causes the man to be a finer and more devoted and more dedicated person who then goes out into the world to do great things for humanity, as the Apostle Paul Saul of Tarsus once did, then the vi sion probably came from God. If, however, the man is the worse for his vision, and does not get profit from it, it is more likely that his experi ence consisted of hallucina tions. When Boisen recovered, he went out into the world, de termined to help others. After getting much training in psy chiatry, and after encounter ing many difficulties in get ting cooperation from psy chiatrists, he won the confi dence of that remarkable physician, Dr. Richard C. Cab ot of Boston, who, with Miss Ida Cannon, was the first to establish a social service de partment in a hospital. With Dr. Cabot's help, Dr. Boisen became the type of well-train ed chaplain in a mental, hos pital who can help the pa tients who have religious problems. Later, in 1935, Dr. Cabot and the Rev. Russell L. Dicks wrote a book called, "The Art of Ministering to the Sick," which is still re quired reading in most theo logical seminaries. Today, over 10,000 clergymen have taken graduate courses in both mental and general hospitals, and some 30 hospitals have opened their doors to these "pastoral interns." In "The Burma Suregon," by Dr. Seagrav'e, 1 find this interesting comment to the effect that when a new opera tion needed to be done, the evening before, he got out his books and studied every de tail. Then he became sick to his stomach, and the next morning, still nauseated, he started operating. I am told that a famous opera singer vomits for most of the day before the evening when she is going to sing. All of which shows how distressing emo tion can be to senstive per sons.
