"Ray" Jackson - SP2-S171 lulled Treasure by (Hi England Coins Used In America After 1776 Right after American Inde pendence was aknowledged by England in 1783, some en terprising Britishers started turning out coins, medals and medallions of various types to be sold to Americans. Some were made simply for sale as souveniers or memen toes of Wasnlngton. Others were made as patterns for proposed coins, the makers hoping to get substantial or ders on the basis of their pro posals. How many types of these were made np one knows, but enough of them have been discovered to indicate that the true number will probably never be known. Recently I saw a new vari ant of what is known at the "Immune Colombia" piece. This copper piece, struck in 1785, gets its name from those two Latin words appearing on the obverse side. The words are separated by a Lib erty cap mounted on the end of a staff that is held by a seated female figure which holds the scales of justice in an outstretched hand. On the reverse is another Latin inscription surrounding a design of 13 stars separated by rays extending from a cen tral eye. The difference between the new variant and the usual lay in the variant's having no Liberty cap and staff, Oth erwise it was identical. The condition of the piece was good. It had been worn by some use but all parts of the design were readily dis tinguishable. As to its value, it would certainly be worth $75 to S100. The owner had got it for $50 back in 1939. The ordinary "Immune Co lombia" in copper is worth from $75 to $200, depending on its condition, and if it is found in silver as it some times is the value is easily twice that much. STAMP COLLECTORS DISCOVER NEW COUNTRIES One of the more interest ing things about stamp col lecting is that just as soon as you think you've finally heard of every country in the world, you learn of another one. He wanted a surcharged item of the Ajarian Republic that was issued in either 1919 or 1920. The republic was located at the eastern end of the Black Sea, at the southern tip of the Russian Caucasus. It is still said to be in existence as an autonomous republic of Georgia which, in turn, is one of the republics making up the Soviet Union. However, the collector wasn't interested in any stamps that might be issued by t h e republic today. He wanted the one necessary to complete his collection of those put out by the tiny state before it came under commu nist domination. The stamp was a three-kopek, red colored item of the series put out by the Czar's government fro 1909 to 1912. Its design is the usual one, an imperial eagle surrounded by post horns and thunder bolts. Surcharged on the stamp are some words in Rus sian plus a symbol for 50 ru pees and the words "British Occupation." The Ajarian stamps were used at Batum, the seaport capital of A j aria and one of the larger seaports at the east ern end of the Black Sea. Some were also cancelled at the small towns in the vicinity during the year and a half be fore the British withdrew in July, 1920. The stamp the collector wanted has a catalogue value today of $35, whether can celled or not. COIN-GLASS EPERGNES MADE CENTERPPIECES An epergne is a centerpiece, a type of dish that nas sev eral shallow divided compart ments that are usually used for holding nuts and candies. And so, when a group of us sat down at a table, I was somewhat surprised to notice two of them. "They're ashtrays," our host said when I asked why they were empty. "And if you'll look close at them, I'm sure you will agree they are particularly appropriate to the occasion." They certainly were, even though the maker had never envisioned their being put to such a use. On the sides of the dish, at the corners, were the facsimiles of coins in the glass. They were quarters, ex act reproductions of those is sued in 1892. They were frosted, furthermore, an ef fect obtained by the use of an acid and which looks just as the word suggests. Except for the coins the rest of the piece was in clear glass. Since coin glass, as that with this type of design is known, is much sought after by collectors, I was curious as to how our host happened to have two pieces. "One belongs to my wife," he said. "As for the other, he had picked it up a few days before in a salvage shop, and for only $3. He had picked up an eper gne of coin glass worth $100 of anyone's money for only $3.
