Sunday, October 5, 1958 j OKIahoma Sputters To 6-0 Victory Over Oregon Ducks Norman, Okla. - (LTD -Oklahoma's new wide-open offense sputtered badly Saturday but the nation's top-rated football team gained a 6-0 victory over Oregon in an intersectional thriller before a capacity crowd of 61,700. - Oklahoma was on the short end of the yardage totals a sharp reversal from last year's 599-yard total but capitalized on an Oregon bob ble for the winning points. Oregon controlled the ball through most of the first ma jor period and stood off three Oklahoma drives inside the 30 in the second before Okla homa could score. Five min utes before half-time, Ore gon's Paul Grover dropped the ball at his 17 and Okla homa Guard Dick Corbitt covered it. ' Two rushes carried Okla homa to the nine. From there Quarterback Bobby Boyd swept wide to Kis left and shot a touchdown to Halfback Dick Carptener, waiting in the end zone corner. Boyd's rush around end for the extra point failed. Oregon Ranks 19th Oregon ranked 19th in the United Press International poll, ran and passed a total of 261 yards to 156 for the Sooners. Coach Bud Wilkin- : PAL Season Will Start ; Officials of the Medford , Police Athletic league have set I Monday night. Oct. 6, as this , season's opening night of the PAL gym, located on the sec , ond floor above the former Acme hardware on Sixth st. and the railroad tracks. The gym will be open four nights each week from Mon day through Thursday " from 7 to 9 pjn. Membership is free to all boys and young adults, and the only requirement for any boy to take part in any phys ! ical activities is to bring sweat , shirt, trunks, gym shoes and 1 a towel. Lockers are available ' for each one to change from their street clothes. Jim Zach will again be the boxing coach and activitiesin- structor, and he has lined up ; very busy programs for the boxers. An amateur boxing ' show is planned every four weeks in the Medford area. Officials of the club are hop- ing to get several other com- munities interested in estab lishing boxing clubs. PAL of Medford will aide and support I any community that wishes to : set up such organizations. Talent Youth club is a good example of what can be ac complished, PAL representa 1 tives stated. Henley crushed Rogue River 33 to 0 in the other hassle of District 6 A-2 south ern division. Skeeters went two yards for the first Eagle touchdown after a 40-yard punt return by David Huffman set up a 33-yard drive. He ran the j bonus point. - . , I Ken Jorde blocked a punt bv Gerald Sloper of Phoenix to start another 33-yard move for the Eagles. Skeeters again went the last two yards and Bob Berryman converted with a run. Last TD resulted from a longer march and the score play was for five yards. Consbruck Scores . Phoenix freshman Mike Consbruck went five yards in the final canto for a touch down. Hp was the most con sistent gainer of the night and his 37-yard scamper set up the score. Jack Hoffbuhr booted the extra. A fumble ended another Phoenix goal ward surge. Penalties ,for illegal use of hands hampered the Eagles in their bids for other touch Hnwns. Eaale Point was pen alized 105 yards to 35 for the Pirates. The Eagles had a Badgers Nip Marquette Madison, Wis.-ffiPD-Wiscon-sin applied pressure with two teams of equal strength and crashed in on four of six pass interceptions Saturday to bury Marquette for the 15th straight season, 50-0, before 42,513 persons in 80-degree weather. Quarterback Dale Hack bart was the individual stand out for Wisconsin in this an nual intra-state battle. He scored on a plunge, and a 73 yard run, and started a pass lateral play that ended in a third touchdown. He also in tercepted a pass that started a scoring drive and another in the Badger end zone that ended Marquette's only scor ing threat. Illinois Valley had a nar row 8 to 7 gap on Glendale after three stanzas and got three touchdowns in the final panel, while Glendale made two. IV headed 6 to 0 at the quarter and Glendale 7 to 6 at the half. Henley was in front 6 to 0 13 to 0 after three sessions. The 15 counters in the clos ing period included a safety. Wildcats Clip Indians By 28-0 Evanstan, 111. -(ITD-North-western scored in every per iod Saturday against an out classed Stanford team which made only one genuine scor ing threat to pile up a 28-0 victory for its second win of the season and the third Stan ford defeat. Ron Burton and Dick Thornton shared honors for the Wildcats with a stout de fensive line which stifled the Stanford rushing attack so well and rushed the Indian passers so expertly that the visitors rarely could keep ah attack going. Stanford's only real assault came in the closing minutes of the. first half and then had to be aided by a 23-yard pass interference penalty. Quar terback Dick Norman hand led the drive from the Stan ford 29, throwing eight straight passes. One was good to Tom McDonald for 16 yards but the pass interfer ence gave the Indians a first down on the Northwestern 32. Then Norman connected to John Bond for 22 yards and hit Irv Nikolai for nine more to the Northwestern one as time ran out. The Wildcats had a trem endous statistical edge. Bur ton plunged from the one in the first period to wind up a 64-yard scoring march and in the third period drove over the one again to finish a 48 yard attack. Thornton, Northwestern's sophomore quarterback, pass ed to Fred Williamson for 45 yards and another touchdown while the third string Wild cat signal caller, John Talley, took charge for the fourth touchdown which came with 21 seconds to play. $1)00 A uu uu SPORTS Air Force Outplays Iowa Team Iowa City, Iowa -fUPD An upstart Air. Force Academy team completely outplayed nationally-rated Iowa for all 'but a few minutes Saturday nut nad to settle for a 13-13 tie before 48,325 stunned fans. Only a brilliant goal line stand and a 99-yard touch down drive in the third per iod saved the eighth-rated Hawkeyes from a tremend ous upset defeat at the hands of a gallant band of airmen. The Air Force was un daunted when the favored Hawkeyes ran up a touch down in the first five minutes of the game. Iowa, running plays without even bothering to huddle, moved 38 yards in seven plays to score with 11:04 in the first quarter. Duncan's screen pass to Jeter covered the final 23 yards. Kuenzel immediately took charge after the ensuing kick off and directed the Falcons to a 77-yard touchdown drive in nine plays. Kuenzel passed and ran for 42 yards during the push and then turned halfback Mike Quinlan loose for the final 23 yards on an end sweep. Army Takes Penn State West Point, N. Y. '- (UPD -Quarterback Joe Caldwell triggered Army's new "Ba zooka" attack with two'touch down passes and set up an other Saturday as the high flying Cadets overwhelmed Penn State, 26-0, by piling up all their points in a first-half assault. After amassing four touch downs in the first two periods, Army played out the rest of the game virtually under wraps to prevent further spy ing by scouts for future op ponents who were kept busy at the start charting Coach Red Blaik's new offense fea turing a "lonesome end." Caldwell hit "Lonesome End" Bill Carpenter - who plays so wide he doesn't even try to get into the huddle after each play for one touchdown from 55 yards out and he clicked with another to Captain Pete Dawkins 'for a total gain of 72 yards. Spartans Tie Michigan East Lansing, Mich. -(UPD-Michigan State Saturday pounded 97 yards in the dying minutes with Bob Bercich div ing, in from the two to tie the game, but Sammy Williams' extra - point attempt failed wide and the Spartans just managed to pull out a 12-12 tie with arch-rival Michigan. It was a heart-breaker for the Wolverines even though they held the heavily-favored Spartans to a draw. Lewis and Clark college's Pioneers unleashed an explo sive ground offensive to drub the Southern Oregon college Red Raiders of the Rogue 60 to 13 in a non-conference foot ball engagement. Gary Grill rambled to the goal three times for the Port- Hedrick 9th Defeats GP South 19-0 Mike McCullough crossed the goal three times Friday as Hedrick Junior High school ninth- grade downed South Grants Pass Friday af ternoon at Grants Pass. First touchdown was on a 12-yardt our to end a 50-yard drive. He went over again from about the 10 and with 40 seconds play on a 25-yard scoot and Dave Irving sneak ed one extra point. End runs produced all scores. Hedrick was held around on the South GP 10-yard line on a couple of occasions. . Both crews turned in good defense in the second half. SOC Heaves 41 Passes Jack Brown pitched on the two touchdown passes for Southern Oregon, both good for five yards with one to Larry Yarnell and one to Jim McAbee. Delmar Brood kick ed one extra tally. The Raiders from Ashland, unable to go on the ground, passed 41 times and complet ed 25 with five intercepted. Brown chucked 39 and 23 were caught. SOC made 267 yards in the air to 110 for L&C but the Pioneers ran up 430 rusing.-Gordon Carrigan picked up 51 yards in 13 car ries for the Raiders. But with other backs losing yardage, SOC had only a five-yard net on the grounds. First down were almost even, 20 to 19 for L&C. Quarter scores were 13 to 0, 27 to 0 and 47 to 13. Wins Fourth USG A Senior Tourney Pebble Beach, Calif. -OiPD-Giving away 10 years in age, spare Torn Robbins, Pine hurst, N. C, won the fourth U.S.G.A. National Senior golf championship Saturday as he upset "young". Johnny Daw son, Los Angeles, 2 and 1, in the finals. The 65-year-old new cham pion, a former ' New York sporting goods salesman but now a "retired" tobacco farm er, played flawless golf in turning back Dawson, who at 55 became eligible for the seniors competition this year for the first time. Robbins was- even par for the distance played on the Monterey Peninsula Country club's exacting course. Robbins was one-up at the end of the first nine holes in the 18-hole test. He went two up on the 12th and three-up on the 13th. Dawson made something of a comeback by birdieing the 14th, but they halved the next three holes to close out the match. A 20 yard aerial scored with Dennis Johnson on the re ceiving end. Alan McKinnis touchdowned on a three-yard Voris kicked one extra Voris kicwed one extra Redskins Bounce Talent 30-6 in 5B Grid Tangle Merrill and Bonanza main tained unbeaten status in the District 5B football race with their third victories of the campaign Friday night while Jacksonville moved into lone third position. Merrill clipped Sacred Heart of Klamath Falls 36 to 12, Bonanza topped Chilo quin 8 to 0 and Jacksonville won from Talent 30 to 6. . Jacksonville had a 12 to 6 halftime spread after a 6 all first quarter . standing. Rest of the scoring was in the third stanza. A muffed punt helped get the first Jacksonville marker. The Redskins took over on the Talent three yard line as Ken Perreard recovered the ball. Ron Davis scored on the next play. Talent fell on a Jackson ville fumble on the Redskin 25 yard line.
