MAIL TRIBUNE, Medford, Oregon. Thursday, October 2, 1958 T President Calls Top-LeveS Political Hallv for iViondav Washington (UPD President Eisenhower expanded his own role in the Republican con gressional campaign today and called a top-level political meeting for Monday to try to pep up the rest of the GOP. The White House an nounced the President's plan just one day after Eisenhower had told a news conference that Republicans must aban don their . "sitting-on-hands and complacency" if hey want to win in November. Press Secretary James C. Hagerty said the chief execu tive would enlarge his sched uled campaign trip to Califor nia and Chicago later this nronth by adding visits to Ce dar Rapids, Iowa; Abilene, Kan., and Denver. He said the President's meeting with top party lead ers Monday would have a three-fold objective: To attack apathy in GOP. ranks; to dis cuss, Eisenhower's personal campaign plans, and to ex change ideas on the campaign in general. The President's move tied in with action by other GOF leaders to put more life in the Republican struggle to regain control of Congress this fall, or at least prevent a runaway Democratic victory. Vice President Richard M. Nixon has already hit the campaign trail with a series of hard-hitting speeches on the West Coast. Meanwhile, GOP National Chairman Meade Alcorn and House Re publican leader Joseph W. Martin (Mass.) both ' issued statements designed to rally the rank and file. ' Martin 6aid the GOP can win if party workers will "work and slug." He said every party member should be out on the firing line, help ing GOP candidates for the House and 'Senate. More Speeches Planned The GOP leaders invited to the Monday conference in- Nixon Tells Need Of Attack Campaign To Save Republicans With Nixon in California- (UPD-Vice President. Richard M. Nixon, the Republican par ty's No. 1 fireman, turned to Northern California today in his campaign to rescue the GOP ticket in the November election. Admitting once again that Democratic , claims of a land slide victory in his home state and the nation on. Nov. 4 "could happen," Nixon de clared that the Republican party can win only if it wages a "campaign of attack." Nixon planned to confer with GOP leaders in the San Fincisco Bay area today and tonight addresses a $100-a-plate GOP banquet under the same roof and at the same time that Adlai Stevenson, Democratic presidential nom inee in 1952 and 1956, speaks to a . Democratic rally in the Oakland auditorium. Only a firewall will separate the two campaigners. Fight Talk In a speech Wednesday night at San Diego to a crowd of almost 6,000 which paid $5 apiece to attend, Nixon said Democrats think they can pick up 60 seats in the House of Representatives and 10 or 12 in the U. S. Senate in the November elections. ''This could happen," he said. "It could happen if we let it happen. We can lose and we will lose if we continue to take it on the chin and stay on the defensive. "We must go on the attack, not like Harry S. Truman, with his looseness of .the truth, but with a message of real truth throughout the states and the nation." Nixon . was flanked in San Diego by Sen. William F. Knowland,. the GOP candi date for governor in Californ ia, and by Gov. Goodwin J. Knight, the party's nominee for the U. S. Senate. Know land was defeated last June in a "popularity contest" pri mary election by Democrat Atty. Gen. Edmund G. (Pat) Brown by more than 660,000 votes while Knight trailed Democrat Clair Engle in the Senate race by 560,000 votes although he had Republican opposition. In a speech reminiscent of his fighting attacks on the Democrats back in 1952 and 1956, Nixon in San Diego ae cused some Democrats whom he did not identify with "loose and reckless talk," in criticizing defense and for eign policies of the Eisenhow er administration. 'constructive criticism M is necessary and helpful, but some of it has been of great disservice to the country be cause it has been unreasoned, uninformed and deliberately distorted," he said. eluded Nixon, Senate GOP leader William F. Knowland, who is seeking the governor ship in California, the chair man of the House and Senate GOP Campaign committees. As the scope of Eisenhow er s own campaigning ex panded, Hagerty said still more public appearances in behalf of Republican tickets were in the planning stage. Presumably these will pri marily concern Eisenhower activities in the East. The White House recently announced political speeches and appearances by the Presi dent in Los Angeles Oct. 20, San Francisco Oct. 21, and Chicago Oct. 22. i. There are people at Bumble Bee who have been picking the best of the tuna catch for 20 years or more. They're tough judges. How do they do it? They pick tuna with a light, clean color and a bright, fresh look. It must have that fine, fresh, just-out-of-the-sea smell. Gills are examined. Meat is tested for solidity and firmness. Maybe you can pick the winners now, a and 6. They have that true Bumble Bee quality. The others were good, but not good enough for the Bumble I Bee experts, who feel that careful selection of tuna makes uni form fine eating. An Oregon Product Columbia River Packers Assn., Inc.
