Mrs. L.D.-Mark has become brutal. Mark .-n s the younger kids who are the problems, Mrs. L.D.-My husband and I have been separated for the past year and we are planning to be divorced. However, am worried about the effect all this is having on our three children. The person most affected seems to be our oldest boy, Mark. He is 16 and has sud denly grown very big and strong. He takes advantage of this fact by beating up his younger brother and sister. These incidents have been getting worse and worse and I'm afraid of what may hap pen. Mark evidently got this from his father, who was al ways very harsh with him. It was one of the factors that led to our breakup. I am at a loss to know how to deal with Mark. Mark D.-My mother thinks that I'm the problem! 5he re fuses to see that it's the younger kids who are the problem. They never obey her. They are mean and self ish and are growing up into real brats. Lebanese Army Reopens Streets Beirut, Lebanon-njP&-Rein- forced Lebanese army units backed by tanks and armored cars reopened downtown Bei rut for business today in de fiance of gunfire and explo sions from the nearby Phalan gist district. Army patrols also moved into the Phalangist-dominat- ed area at dawn, unchal lenged by the apparently un- aimed rifle and automatic weapons fire from the roof tops. Army engineers, protected by infantry units, stood by to clear away barricades erect ed by the Phalangists, the para-military force that sup ported former President Ca mille Chamoun during the rebellion. The gunfire apparently was intended to intimidate mer chants in the neighboring commercial area, but the noise volleys fired into the air failed to keep the shops closed or shoppers out of the district. American soldiers and Ma rines watched the rooftops uneasily a few blocks away as they loaded transport and cargo ships for the American withdrawal from Lebanon. The last Marine battalion has almost finished loading and a spokesman said its am ' phibious squadron of four ships might sail today to re join the 6th Fleet in the Med iterranean. Its departure will leave about 8,000 U. S.- Army troops here. INVITE NOTED CELLIST Washington - (UPD - Cellist Pablo Casals was invited to day to come here to be honor ed by the Organization of American States for his work on behalf of peace and better world understanding. TEXTILE EXECUTIVE DIES Kent, Conn. - (UPD -Edward T. Pickard, 72, former exe cutive secretary of the Tex tile Research Institute and secretary of the Textile Foun dation in Washington, died Sunday. It's true my father was rough on me at times, but I see now that he was right. There's only one way of teach ing kids right and wrong. I'm glad my parents are separated because he was mean to my mother, but unless someone is boss in the house, things are going to go from bad to worse. It isn't right that my moth er should treat me like a problem child. She was en gaged to be married when she was my age. She doesn't re alize I'm grown up. ' The Council:-Mark is un doubtedly deeply scarred by the overly harsh treatment he got at the hands of his father. This probably has had a stronger effect on him than his parents' separation. It is natural for an adoles cent boy to have a yearning to be the head of the family, especially if he is the oldest and even more especially if his father is suddenly re moved from the household. Unfortunately, Mark has had a very poor example of what is to be the head of a family, It would be very helpful for Mark to be in close con tact with another man in the family someone he can ad mire and who is, at the same time, gentle and firm. If Mrs, L.D. has no brother or cousin who might fill the bill, she should try to point out admir able men among friends. Mark is old enough to be approachable in reasonable terms. Mrs. L.D. might ex plain that she would like to have a strong, dependable man in the family, but that she can have no confidence in a brutal man. It is probable that Mark is far too engrossed in the fam ily problems. It will help him in his 'growth to concentrate on outside factors his school worK, nis iuture, developing skill at sports. Sportsmanship will teach- him fair play, a sense of his strengths and limitations, and respect for the strengths and limitations of others. (Copyright. 1958. General Features Corp.) Truman Accused Of 'Falsehoods' In Vote Speech Washington (UPD Republi can National Chairman Meade Alcorn accused former Presi dent Truman today af "false hoods, distortions and parti san venom" in his 1953 cam paign speeches. Alcorn issued a new blast at the Democratic ex-president as the congressional cam paign headed into its last five weeks .with signs that leaders in both camps were ready to get down to bare-knuckle slugging. Nixon -To Speak Vice President Richard M. Nixon was slated to hit the camjjaign trail today with what was described as a "stay tough" defense of President Eisenhower's Formosa policy. He planned to speak twice to day - at Muncie and Indiana polis, Ind. then, fly to the West Coast for five major speeches. Truman, not one to be deterred Hv OOP- protests, will continue nis "give 'em hell" punching at Republicans with speeches in six more states in the next two weeks- Wyoming, Ohio Iowa, North Dakota, Minnesota nad Michi gan. He touched eight states during the last half of Sep tember. Muskie On List Democratic head quarters also announced it is adding Gov. Edmund S. Muskie of Maine, who won a U.S. Sen ate seat in Maine's Democratic election sweep earlier this month, to its roster of cam paign orators. He will make eight appearances in four states during the next two weeks. Adlai E. Stevenson, Demo cratic presidential nominee in 1952 and 1956, speaks at Los Angeles tonight. President Ei senhower already is billed for three major-speeches in Cali fornia and Illinois later next month and is expected to do some campaigning in the East as well. All are aiming at the voters who, on Nov. 4, will choose all 435 members of the House of Representatives, one-third of the Senate and 33 gover nors, plus numerous local and state officials. 1 Girl Badly Hurl In Riding Mishap Hilts, Calif.-Janet Ferguson, 15, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William -S, Ferguson, Cole- stein rd., Hilt, Calif., received a skull fracture Saturday morning while riding a horse. She is listed in fair condi tion at Siskiyou general and county hospital this morning. The accident occurred while Janet was riding a horse belonging to the S: S. Bar ranch owned by Forrest Burns and sons, acording to reports. The horse suddenly jumped and reared, threw her off and fell over backwards. Although the horse didn't fall on the girl he lashed out with a front leg while at tempting to rise and caught the girl in the head. She was taken to the hospital by Gird- ner's ambulance, a family friend said. Russia Keeping Domb From China London-(UPD -Soviet Russia is withholding the atomic bomb from its ally Commu nist China "for the time be ing," Communist diplomatic sources said today. The Communist explana tion, was that Moscow feared the distribution of the atomic bomb among its allies could make the hoped for prohibi tion and abolition of nuclear weapons more difficult. Soviet affairs experts be lieved that Moscow preferred to keep its monopoly over the dreaded weapon-just in case. The Communist diplomats warned that in the event of an emergency Russia would have to supply the nuclear weapons to Red China. The Chinese were said to have re ceived training in their. use. The question of supplying atomic weapons to Red China was spotlighted by recent re ports that Peiping was nego tiating with Moscow for the possession of nuclear arms. Russia apparently has been giving Peiping scientific and technical assistance on a mod erate scale, and last weekend Red China inaugurated its first 10,000 kilowatt experi mental atomic reactor built with Soviet help. But information reaching here suggested that Moscow was being extremely cautious and was holding onto the atomic bomb, merely holding out the promise that its al lies would be supplied when an emergency arose.
