Ohio State Week End New York-aTD-Ohio State and Auburn, the two schools which finished one-two in the nation last year, are solid fa vorites to win their opening football games Saturday. The Buckeyes, the 195T na tional collegiate football champions, were rated 13- Heavy Drill On Schedule For Tornado It's heavy drills for the Medford high Black Tornado this week despite the fact that they have no game. After a light workout Monday, head coah Fred Spiegelberg and his aides drilled their charges hard yesterday. More heavy work was set for this afternoon and Thursday. Practice on Thursday will be the last un til next Monday when the Tornado resumes prepara tions for the high-geared Marshfield club which plays here Oct. 3. On Tuesday the Medford gridmen were put - through individual work. They had dummy scrimmage and de fensive drill. Spiegelberg said that today's and Thurs day's schedules would be just about the same." A few plays are being added to the of fense. Mora than 80 Football turnout has swell-1 ed to more than 80 with the opening of high school class es this week. Most of the newcomers are with the jun ior varsity. The Tornado came through its David Douglas game in tact and the coaches natur ally are hoping that the crew will stay healthy. Baker, 128 Keene way drive, Medford, reports good hunting over the week end in California's Trinity Alps, north of Weaverville. He, his wife, Opal, son, Fred L. Baker, and son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Baker, Chico, Calif., took four deer when the California deer season opened last week end. The party's kill includes a forked horn, and eight pointer, and tw j four pointers. . , . Baker ;said they ran onto the deer in the granite rocks well above timberline. Two of the deer were killed opening morning, one Sunday and one Monday. The deer are in prime condition-sleek and fat, Baker said. The Oregon deer season opens Oct. 4. I. -(UPD" The champion sailboats of Britain and America swept off in a hearty breeze today for a real test of the faster yacht in the 107-year-old America's Cup races'. America's Columbia beau tifully out-maneuvered Scep tre at ihe-starting line and took a lead over the British cup sloop at the outset. The race began at 9?20 a.m. (PDT). It had to be finished by 2:50 p.m. and today there appeared to be little danger the winner would not beat the deadline. "Just give us a good stiff breeze and we will jolly well go," said Sceptre's profession al skipper, Stanley Bishop. Lot In Remark Yachtmen agreed there was a lot in what he said despite Sceptre's taking a bad beating from the American boat in" the first race and trailing far behind in the second before it was called on account of slowness. " Will Besmanoff Stops Miteff Seattle, Wash. - (UPI) - Willi Besmanoff, jubilant over his first-round technical knockout victory over eighth-rated Alex Miteff, today challenged . the entire heavyweight division, "especially Zora Folley." . Besmanoff, 201Vz, stagger ed Miteff, 206V4,. twice with left hooks in the first minute of the fight and then dropped him in a corner for a manda tory eight-count hanging over the upper strand after Bes manoff had landed a three punch combination. The bell rang seconds later and Miteff limped to his cor ner. The attending physician entered the ring and stopped the fight, saying the Argentine had suffered torn ligaments in his right knee.
