Newspaper Page TextDemocrats Split On How To Gain From Adams Case Washingtori-d'PD-Democratic Party leaders fell into two schools today about how to get the most political benefit from the Sherman Adams case. But both agreed it could yield them political dividends right up to election day. There was grumbling among some Democrats because party chairman Paul M. But ler asked and took equal ra dio and television time Tues day night to reply to Adams' Monday night speech. Adams a( that time announced his resignation as chief aide to President Eisenhower and said he had been a victim of a campaign- of vilification. Might Damage Cause Butler's Democratic critics feared he might damage the Democratic cause by an un restrained partisan attack on Adams. These complaints were muted when they dis covered Butler was making, for a party chairman, a fairly mild reply. Republican National Chair man Meade Alcorn did not re gard Butler's speech as soft on Adams. "After planning and execut ing a political lynching, he (Butler) insisted on free tele vision time to be seen in the front row of the mourners," Alcorn said. Equal Time Given Butler was given the same 10 minutes time by two tele vision and three radio net works that Adams had been alloted. Another radio-TV net work gave equal time to Chairman Oren Harris (D Ark.) of the House sub-committee which revealed Adams had accepted gifts from his friend Bernard Goldfine, the Boston businessman who had troubles with government agencies. Butler said "political expe diency" and not a Democratic plot had forced Adams out of the White House. Both he and Harris said the clamor for Adams' resignation came not from Democrats but from Re publicans running for office this year. Quotes From the News By UNITED PRESS INTERNATIONAL - . Railroad Enters Longshore Dispute - Portland (UPD A railroad Tuesday entered the dispute between the International Longshoremen's and Ware housemen's Union and the General Ore and Chemical Corp. over unloading- of bulk alumina from ships by use of non-union laborers. The Union Pacific Railroad filed a complaint for an in junction against the union's picketing and alleged coer cion of its employees by long shoremen pickets. The rail road transports the unloaded alumina from the Portland waterfront to the Harvey Alu minum plant at The Dalles. . Federal Judge William East scheduled a show cause hear ing for Thursday. The railroad asked for dam ages from the union. Pickets from Local 8 of tht ILWU were at roads leading to the General Ore plant and to unloading of the Liberian ship Derby which arrived from Japan Sunday with a full load of alumina.
