MAIL TRIBUNE, M4M, On.. Tuewfcy, September 23. USI 9 ME Fish Lake Operation Set Oct. 1 Poisoning of Fish lake for trash fish will start Oct. 1, it was decided yesterday after noon during a meeting at the Medford irrigation district of fice on Barnett rd. The decision followed a meeting of representatives of the Medford and Rogue River Valley irrigation districts, the U.S. Forestry service and the State Game commission. Four - Mile lake waters which flow through the Cas cade canal and into Fish lake will be poisoned in the under ground basalt basin Sept. 26 to make sure the coverage is thorough, it was explained. The lake was poisoned in 1951, but trash fish have since become a serious prob lem. The water level in Fish lake will be maintained tem porarily at 3,500 acre feet which is the maximum level at which the lake can be treat ed. This is bout 1,000 acre feet more than originally fig ured on by the forestry serv ice and the game commission. Raising the level to more than 2,500 acre feet will mean an additional cost of $1,600. To tal cost estimated by the game commission before for the seven-day treatment of Fish lake and of Four Mile water was $8,000, according to Bob Boravicka, Portland state game commission biologist. To Request Funds The biologist said the addi tional funds would be re quested from the game com mission which must approve allocation of any funds over $500. The commission will keep an extra man and a Sno Cat at Fish lake to help the irrigation districts' crews with any emergencies which may arise during the poison ing, it was explained. The biologist said that skin divers would use pressure hoses to shoot the rotenone chemical into the springs at Fish lake. Jack Hoffbuhr, Medford Irrigation district manager, said the gates on the Cascade ditch from Four Mile lake into Fish lake could be closed any time to cut off the flow of water for the poi soning operations. Harold Thomas, Ashland district ranger, said Fish lake had been famous for its fish ing in 1910. Biologist Bora vicka stated that Fish lake could be very productive in both quantity and quality of fish. This is because of the quality of water and the basin in which it is, also the nu trients or fish food existing in the lake waters. The trash fish variety now in the lake is native to' the Klamath drainage, he explained. These have gradually crowded out the trout. Plan 100 Per Cent Kill Boravicka said he is hoping for a 100 per cent kill through poisoning for trash fish. De pending on variable condi tions, it is some time before the toxicity from the poison ing chemical ..wears off so trout may be planted, he ex plained. If the poisoning isn't done soon it will be impossi ble to plant trout this season and there will be no fishing in Fish lake next year. Lloyd Morris, owner-operator of the Fish lake resort, said he has an $80,000 invest ment at the lake. During two years the rapidly dwindling fishing due to the trash fish has cost him an estimated $40,000, he stated. The Ashland district rang er said during 1955, 21,000 people used Fish lake. This dropped to 10,000 in 1957. The resort owner estimated 1,000 people visited the lake during the 1958 season. The state igame biologist said 100,000 trout are being held at the Butte Falls hatch ery for Fish lake. Philip Lowry attorney for Medford Irrigation district, explained that Fish lake and Four Mile lake come under the jurisdiction of the Med ford and Rogue River Valley Irrigation districts. Approxi mately 14,000 acres of irri gated lands come under the two boards, the attorney said. Boards Responsible The water boards of both districts are legally responsi ble to their customers to see they get the needed water, the attorney said. Both boards desire to cooperate in the poi soning operation, he said. The 3,500 acre foot level is as low as Fish lake should be drawn off in order to give a mini mum protection to the water users, he said. Weather con ditions are so variable that precautions must be taken in advance to ensure a good wa ter supply, Lowry said. The district already has held back the normal flow of water from Four Mile lake for 70 days hoping to reach an agreement and have the PI Si Jl v Boxer Fails To Show Up Providence, R.I.-OIPD-Light-weight Gordon Parker of Ath ol, Mass., still was unheard from today after failing to show up for a 10-round main bout at Arcadia Ball Room Monday night. Parker was present for the official noon weigh-in Mon day but did not appear for his scheduled bout with Pat Mc Coy of Galway, Ireland. BREAKING AWAY FOR a 20-yard gainer, College of Pacific's fleet left halfback Dick Bass, No. 22, had his efforts nullified in first quarter when penalty called back the play. Bass scored on another run in the first quarter, and so did California's great passing and running back, Joe Kapp. Both players were standouts in the clash. Both the American Colum bia and Britain's Sceptre had been hoping for a real blow off Newport Harbor in Sep tember.
