Dr. Ratner said that there has been an increase in bottle feeding of babies, after dis charge from hospitals, from 62 per cent in 1947 to 79 per cent in 1957. And he thinks this has caused in the 10 years, an increase in cow's milk allergy from 930 cases to 1,185 cases per hundred thou sand population. But protection from allergy is not the only advantage of the mother's nursing a baby. Breast feeding lessens the mortality from a number of conditions, such as severe di arrheas, and perhaps contagi ous diseases. The reason is that the mother helps her baby by supplying him with some of the antibodies against disease that she has in her body. Dr. Ratner thinks also that there is a great psychol ogic advantage that comes to a mother when she nurses her baby. He thinks she will be a better mother. The mother who doesn't nurse her baby misses a great privilege . and a great joy. Dr. Ratner felt that it should occur to us physicians that the Good Lord designed mother's milk for babies: that it is the best possible food for them, and that a return to breast-feeding could greatly improve the health of the Na tion. I know that years ago when I questioned with great care 500 people whom I saw one after another in my of fice at the Mayo Clinic, I found that 1 in 4 was so sen sitive to cow's milk that he or she could not drink it with comfort. About 1 in 10 had so much discomfort from drink ing cow's milk that he or she couldn't touch it at all. In a recent report from the huge Sloan-Kettering Institute for Cancer Research in New York City, I find that work ers there are making a vac cine that will protect mice from one form of experimen tal cancer. They also are working hard, trying to isolate enough of a body-protective chemical called properdin so that they can study it well. They know that persons with much of this substance in their blood are highly resistant to cancer. The next thing to do is to see if the injection of properdin in men and women will enable them better to fight the growth of cancer cells. Another substance, called j zymosan, will cure cancer in 100 per cent of certain ani mals, but unfortunately the 7:00 Top Ten Lucy Shows 7:30 Dupont Show of the Month 9:00 RoDin Hood 9:30 Burns and Allen 10:00 Knowledge 10:30 News 10:35 Sign Off 10:30 News 10:35 Marine Corps 11:05 Sign Off Waifs TV & Radio Service Oldest Shop in So.
