Los Angeles -(DPD-Southern
California was back in the na
tional football picture today
after scoring the first major
upset of the college season
Friday night when the Tro
jans defeated favored Oregon
State, 21-0.
The Trojans by their open
ing victory equalled last sea
son's entire output of wins
and looked ahead to more suc
cess if their sophomores and
a few veterans can continue
Friday night's inspired work.
The Southern California
line failed to be awed by Ore
gon State's advance billing as
the top team in the Pacific
Coast conference and stopped
the vaunted Beaver backs at
the line of scrimmage.
Twins Outstanding
Coach Don Clark, in his
second season at Southern
California, gave credit for his
initial home victory to the en
tire team but he singled out
sophomore linemen. Dan Fic
ca and the McKeever twins,
Marlin and Mike, as especial
ly outstanding.
These sophomores, aided by
veteran guards Frank Fioren
tino and "Walt Gurasich, larg
ely were responsible for hold
ing Oregon State to 158 yards
on the ground and 46 through
the air.
The Trojans got off to a
quick start in the first peri
od on a 47-yard march fea
tured by quarterback Willie
Wood's 19-yard pass to Mar
lin McKeever on the one. Rex

score.

Line Play Scores
Coach Tommy Prothro, who
has never won a game in the
Los Angeles area since taking
over as Oregon State's head
coach, attributed the Trojan
victory to their line play.
"They were eating us up on
the line of scrimmage," Pro
thro said. "We showed we
lacked a good passer and how
much we missed Joe Francis
from last year's team."
Clark, carried off the field
by his players on their shoul
ders, hailed the win as a "tre
mendous team effort. Our
kids of last year matured and
the sophomores came through
like veterans."
He also paid tribute to quar
terback Wood for his final
passing and signal-calling and
agreed with Prothro that half
back Rex Johnston, a senior
limited to five games by con
ference edict, played a bril
liant game.

But he also made several bad
pitchouts on the option plays,
typical of Washington's split

Drill Turns
To Defense
"Fewer in numbers, some
size and some speed in vari
ous spots." That's the way
Coach John Reed sums up the
football situation for ninth
graders at McLoughlin Jun
ior High school.
About 40 gridders at the
west side junior high have
completed two weeks of re
viewing fundamentals of the
game, of conditioning and of
attempting to learn an of
fense. Contact drills have
been the order since the first
day of practice. Since offense
has had stress in drills to
date, defense will get main
attention in forthcoming prac
tices. Along the line some of the
top candidates appear to be
Monte Jones, Terry O'Con
nors and Norman Renner,
tackles; Gene Off ord and
John Alansky, centers; Joel
Gregory, Carl Washburn,
Larry Olson and Dave Elm
gren, guards, and George
Clearwater, end.
Backfield working togeth
er most of the time consists
of Craig Laurence, Larry
Plankenhorn, Jim Dexter and
Danny Coghill. Among those
pushing them are Sonny Leff
ler, Steve Kehoe, Eric Kell
ner and Rex Nicodemus.
The Bulldogs expect a dif
ficult task in their ambition
to duplicate the success of
their 1957 predecessors. Mc
Laughlin was undefeated in
five games last fall to' claim
the unofficial junior high
championship of southern
Oregon.
McLoughlin will open its
new season at 1:30 p.m. Sat
urday, Sept. 27, at Klamath
Falls.
