MAIL TRIBUNE, Medford, Oregon, Friday, September 19. 1958 Many Veterans in For Saturday Fray With Ashland-A veteran lineup with a touch of newcomers is slated to be on the field for the Red Raiders of Southern Oregon college when the opening kickoff is whistled against Moffett Air base Sat urday-at 8 p.m. on the college football field here. Lance Locke will take up field general duties where he Grosz Gets Call Over Letfermen By HOWARD APPLEGATE Eugene - (LTD - Many of the hopes of the 1958 University of Oregon football team rest upon the broad shoulders of an' untested sophomore who has yet to play one minute of varsity football. He's Dave Grosz, a 194 pound, six-foot-two-inch quar terback from Kent. Wash., located only a few miles from the University of Washington in Seattle. Coach Len Casanova is ex tremely high on Grosz, who has moved into the starting quarterback job ahead of let termen Sandy Fraser and Paul Grover. Reolaces Crablree Casanova says the Oregon quarterback situation is as good this year as it was last year at this time. And that could be a bad omen for Ore gon's opponents. Last year Oregon had Jack Crabtree, a senior who didn't crack the starting lineup until his final year but who proved himself outstanding and who was named the top player in the Rose Bowl game. Crab tree had Fraser and Grover behind him throughout . the season. Grosz was eligible last year but was held out. He picked tip valuable pointers during the games. In spring practice he ran so well he was used part time as a left halfback. Grosz is extremely quick, a valuable asset for a Informa tion quarterback. He does 50 yards in six seconds. He is considered a good defensive player and punter as well as a passer. In Oregon's attack the quar terback is often called upon to run the ball on optional plays and it may be Grosz running ability which has placed him ahead of the other two candidates at the start. The Oregon coaching staff believes Grosz has a chance to develop into a great star like Norm Van Brocklin and George Shaw. Lack of experience at the signal calling post is his handicap. He gets his first test here Saturday against Idaho. Then, two weeks later, Oregon goes iip against Oklahoma. He should be "experienced" enough after that contest to run the team against PCC Opponents. Locke is becoming more and more polished as a split T quarterback, according to head coach AI Akins. Filling up the rest of the backfield will be veterans Larry Maurer at fullback and Eldon Francis at left half plus newcomer Laval Meunier from St. Mary's in Medford, in the right half slot. Maurer, from Cave Junc tion, was the leading figure in the come-from-behind vic tory over Oregon College of Education last year when he scored three times in the sec ond half as the men of SOC won 21-19. Francis Sharp Runner Francis is the sharp break away runner from Medford where he was a second team all-stater in 1956. Meunier played some years back for St. Mary's and in recent workouts he has proven quite a help. He is a fine pass re ceiver. Jim McAbee and versatile Gordie Carrigan have won the starting end assignments for the opener should the Raiders receive the kickoff. McAbee, always dependable, is from Talent. Carrigan, from Crater High of Central Point, can play halfback, quarter back, or end where he is start mg. Phil Sword, an all-conference selection last year, will start a center and be flanked by guards Troy Bellah and Jim Tacchini. At tackles will be Bud Brittsan and Al So daro, both Medford residents. Tacchini earned himself a starting spot after having to drop out -last year with knee trouble. He has been showing some good blocking to earn the starting assignment. Moffett Passing Likely Moffett is expected to have just as good a team as last year, if not a little better, ac cording to information re ceived from the southlanders camp in the past week. The airmen have the same quar terback as last year and if the pattern follows this year as last there will be quite a bit of passing. The Raiders on the other hand have been working on a well balanced attack which features both running and passing with the men of SOC hopeful of picking up yard age whichever way they care WHIP. The Red Raiders open their 1958 slate Saturday night on Fuller field at Ashland against Moffett Naval Air Force Base. Game time is 8 pjn. Sword made the Oregon Collegiate conference all-star first team last season while Locke was named to the all-loop second crew. The two also were teammates at Ashland High. Locke is a sharp rJasser and runner and works well off the split T. He may share conversion chores. Sword likes contact work and may play mainly defense this fall and with lack of depth in the line may be a two-way man some of the season. He'll likely handle kick-off chores. to choose. The defensive lineup is yet undetermined for the Raiders and probably will not be re vealed until just before game time. Dick Smith and Dick Swinney along with Marion Jack and John Godlove ap pear likely starters in the for ward defensive wall with pos sibly Wayne Collum appear ing in the secondary. All they need is a victory over the Redlegs plus an ac companying triumph by the Phillies over the second-place Pirates to clinch their second straight National league pen nant. The Braves, who had to wait until Sept. 23 to win last year, will send rookie Carlton Willey against Cincinnati to night and if he doesn't get the job done, they've got Lew Burdette and Warren Spahn ready to go against the Red legs during the week end. The still-hopeful Pirates got the official go-ahead from Commissioner Ford Frick to order printing plates for World Series tickets Thurs day, but the Braves made it a rather empty gesture by heat ing the Cardinals, 9-3, Thurs day night. Big Bob Rush posted the victory that reduced the Braves' magic number to "two" and increased their lead over the Pirates to six games. Milwaukee and Pitts burgh each have seven games to play. Red Schoendienst paced Milwaukee's 13-hit attack with three doubles and a single while Johnny Logan and Andy Pafko contributed homers. Pafko hit his with two on in the ninth off reliever Nels Chittum. St. Louis starter Sam Jones was kayoed in the fourth inning and suffered his 12th loss. The victory for Rush, who gave up 11 hits, was his 10th against six losses. Hesperia Led By Jerry Barber Hesperia, Calif. - (LTD A trio of veteran pros, led by 42-year-old Jerry Barber, headed the pack today in the second round of the 72-hole $17,000 Hesperia Open golf tournament. Barber carded a record shattering nine-under-par 63 Thursday in the first round, sweating out 100-degree heat. He nosed out 34-year-old Dick Mayer, the 1957 Nation al Open champion who has won hardly a dime on the pro tour this year. Mayer turned in a 31-33-64. Only two were played in the American league, with the White Sox beating the Orioles, 6-2, and the Athletics defeating the Red Sox, 4-1. Rookie Barry Latman turn ed in a fine relief effort in helping the White Sox strengthen their hold on second place.
