Out here in the West, no one needs to be told what that could mean. We all know. It could mean PLENTY OF WA TER for everybody. It could put an -end to the ruckus over the Colorado river's waters. It could free us from the fear of PROLONGED DROUTH. We've been pass ing through a brief period of abundant precipitation, but we mustn't forget the record of an 800-year-old tree cut in the Klamath country some years ago. Its growth rings tell the story of a 65-year-drouth back, in the 1700's. . What has happened once can happen again. NOTE, please, that Dr. Karl er's report asserts that not only salt but ESSENTIAL MINERALS can be extracted from sea water. What of that? V Well,, minerals in the land can be exhausted. The sea is a practically INEXHAUSTI BLE source of useful miner als. For countless millions of years the rains have been washing mineral substances out of the land and carrying them down to the sea, STOR ING them in the sea water. , When we learn to recover them from the sea water, the threat of shortages in the fu ture will vanish. THE scientists paint for us a ; picture of a world that in the future may be free of most of the ills and the pests and the griefs of the world of the past. BUT- This fascinating picture that is being revealed to us by the physical scientists will be rendered unattainable un less the scientists of the MIND can find a way to keep us from destroying ourselves by the 'quarrels and the bicker ings that LEAD TO WAR. Unfortunately, in this world of ours, the techniques of DISAGREEMENT seem to be proliferating more rapidly than the techniques of AGREEMENT. New York City has about 550 miles of developed water front and employs an estimat ed 250,000 persons in the ex port and import business.
