Manager Walt Alston, his team in sixth place with al most no hope of finishing in the first division, seems in tent on salvaging something in experience for his rookies in the sagging end of the sea son. The last time the Giants visited Wisconsin they were just one game behind the Braves and were being hailed Nelson Gets Player Title MontreaWUPD- Triple-crown champion Rocky Nelson, To ronto first baseman, today was named the International league's most valuable play er for the third time. Nelson, wha won the MVP award in 1953 and 1955 while with Montreal, beat out Mon treal second baseman George (Sparky) Anderson. Nelson drew 232 points to Anderson's 208. No one else ever has won the award more than once. Nelson, balding Portsmouth, Ohio, native, won the 1958 batting title with a .326 aver age, the home-run crown with 43 and RBI honors with 120. Nelson also won the league's triple crown in 1955 as well as being home run king in 1954 and 1953. They were Don Miles, Ron Fairly, Bob Lillis, Don Deme ter and Stan Williams. Just before me Dodgers started their final swing of the year through the East, club officials announced they were calling up a set of new comers to give them a chance for major league action. Fairly, Lillis and Demeter have attracted attention by their play, but efforts of all as pennant threats. Milwau kee swept the four game ser-ies-and San Francisco never recovered. Since then, the Braves have gone on to virtually cinch their second straight pennant, while the Giants,-who also gave way to Pittsburgh-are fighting for third place. The Giants trail the Braves by IIV2 games and Pitts burgh by 5. They hold a 3'2 game edge on fourth-place Cincinnati and lead St. Louis by 412. There'll be a few individ ual marks at stake tonight, however. Johnny Antonelli will go to the mound for San Fran cisco, seeking his 16th win of the year and 100th National league victory. Although the Braves hold a 15-6 game ad vantage over the Giants, An tonelli has broken even with two wins and two losses. He was shut out in both losses. The Braves will send Yankee-killer Lew Burdette up against Manager Bill Rig ney's southpaw. The game also marks the last clash between San Fran cisco's Willie Mays and Mil waukee's Hank Aaron, who are still in the fight for the batting championship. Mays has a slight edge, .335 to .333, but they'll both have to keep busy to catch Richie Ashburn of the Phils who is wacking .340. The Giants got a rest Mon day after Sunday's split with the Cincinnati Redlegs. The Braves trimmed the Los An geles Dodgers in a game Mon day, 8-3. CUBS GET FIVE PLAYERS Philadelphia (UPD Five players from the pennant winning Fort Worth Cats of the Texas league will join the Chicago Cubs here today. Los Angeles shot in front with a 3-0 lead at the end of three innings and was still ahead 3-2 going into the bot ton of the seventh. Then, Don Zimmer and Bob Lillis collid ed and dropped an easy pop fly. The Braves went on to score five runs and add an other in the eighth. Bob Rush (9-6) who relieved Carl Willey was the winner. Jordan Set For Ortega Portland -(UPD- Don Jordan, the sixth ranking welter weight who meets No. 1 ranked contender Gaspar Or tega here Wednesday night in a nationally-televised 10 rounder, said today he is af ter a crack at the light-weight champ, Joe Brown. Jordan, who decisioned former No. 1 ranked welter weight contender Isaac Lo gart in July, said he believed he could win over Ortega. Jordan said he hasn't been able to get fights in the light weight division so has been battling as a welterweight. Ortega is battling for a shot at Virgil Akins, the welter weight champion. The 10-round bout gets un der way at 6 p.m. p.s.t., with other fights to follow. Glennen Given Honor Portland -(UPD University of Portland baseball coach Bobby Glennen, at 24 one of the youngest major college coaches in the United States, was notified Monday he has been . awarded Pacific Coast regional coach of the year honors by Coach and Athlete Magazine. Copple, an ex-Medford high star, is one of the top prospects among sophomore line men and is playing at a tackle spot. Coach Jim Sutherland figures that Copple may be used sparingly in games this fall because of the depth of experienced men ahead of him, but the Cougar mentor still has definite plans for the ex-Tornado player. Sutherland has had Copple and sophomore halfback Lee Schroeder doing a lot of field goal work in practices. Both were consistent last week from around the 30-yard line. The Medford athlete won his numeral as a WSC freshman grid regular- last fall and then was a member of the fine Coubabe basketball squad. Charity Benefit Race Set For Camp White Strip lne second annual 'charity benefit drag race will be held this Sunday, Sept. 21, at the Camp White strip. Sponsored by Southern Oregon Timing association, all proceeds of this meet are slated for the United Medford Crusade and the Ashland - Talent Youth fund. Competition is expected to be keen in many classes, al- mougn some 01 tne top ma chines seen in action at the championship meet are not expected to be on the strip for this meet. Local contest ants will once again pit their cars and driving skill against competitors from Oregon and northern Calif. Posts Bond SOTA has posted a $25 savings bond on the new strip record 01 144.4b miles per hour held by Jay Cheatham of Sunnyvale, Calif. Chea tham chattered the existing record of 134.24 mph at the Chimpionship meet held over the weekend of Sept. 6-7 and won the $200 bond that had been building on that record. SOTA places another $25 bond on the strip record each time that it is not bettered. Jack White owner of White's Cycle shop in Med ford has posted a $25 bond on his "B" cycle record of 100.55 mph established on the Camp White strip. White set the record in Sept. 1957 at the first annual Northwest Gas championship meet. Since that date he has won his class at every meet in which he participated. By posting this bond on his record, White stated that he hoped this would serve as an incentive for other cycle drivers to race their machines on the drag strip. Time trials will open at 9:30 a.m. and eliminations scheduled after lunch. Dead line for entries will be 12 noon. Trophies will go to all class winners, for top time of the meet and for top-eliminator. UP FROM MINORS St. Louis-(UPD-The St.. Phils Near 7th Place; Beat Cards United Press International Robin Roberts and Richie Ashburn, two of the original Whiz Kids who helped Eddie Sawyer lead the Philadelphia Phillies to a pennant in 1950, are making gallant efforts to prevent a last-place finish for the returned pilot this year. And, in the process, Rob erts could well wind up with "comeback of the year" award and Ashburn with a National league batting title. The Phillies, who haven't finished in the cellar since 1945, climbed to within two games of the seventh-place Chicago Cubs when they beat the St. Louis Cardinals, 6-2, Monday night. The Milwau kee Braves trimmed their magic pennant clinching num ber to four with an 8-3 vic tory over the Los Angeles Dodgers in the only other day or night game in either league. Roberts, who seemed over the hill after 19-18 and 10-22 won-lost records the past two years, pitched a seven-hitter to raise his current mark to 16-13. It was his 19th com plete game of the season and his five strikeouts raised his total to 123 for 252 innings. Set Club Record Ashburn, who set a club record by playing in his 1,631st game, raised his league - leading average to .343 when he smashed a triple and a single. He now holds a five-point lead over St. Louis' Stan Musial, idle again Monday night. Doubles by Harry Anderson and Jim Hegan plus a sacri fice fly by Ted Kazanski gave the Phillies a 2-0 lead in the second inning and they added single runs at the expense of Vinegar Bend MizelJ in the fifth and sixth.
